Pitool 272 auto updates the 5k XR to FW 273 which leads to pitool and windows not recognising the HMD.
Only flashing older FW helped and using older pitool version.

I saw that issue too, with PiTool 271, so I’m still using 270. However, I’m using firmware v2.1.255.298, which allows me to run my 8KX at 90Hz. That FW is 8KX-only, but you should be able to use whatever new FW is available for the 5K XR. The “unrecognized headset” issue appears to be in PiTool, not the FW.

i flashed the old FW, installed the 272 pitool and blocked the update…its working, other way around, it doesnt.

@PimaxQuorra Using PiTool 272 but with firmware 299 and find that with “compulsive smooth” at 1/2 I find that when the headset goes into standby mode, it doesn’t wake up properly. I get rectangle screen look and the image is stuttering.
I have to shutdown SteamVR and restart it from Pimax Experience for the headset to get back to normal functioning.

I had trouble with the last beta pitool update. It asked me to update the firmware and after the process it was bricked. I couldn’t fix it until I found a program in Pimax forums from another user and it worked right away. With the pimax software I couldn’t.
First time it happened to me.

You need to reflash the firmware to work with 272V, if you find out any uncommon scenario, please contact with our tech support.

I had installed that firmware but when the headset is set down on my desk and goes into standby with SteamVR running, SteamVR freaks out and I get Square rectangle on the edges of the displays and image and tracking lagg / stutter. This is only rectified by exiting SteamVR back to Pimax Experience and restarting SteamVR.
Slightly annoying if you have to quickly attend to something whilst using the headset in a sim or game.

They will perform a diagnostic on your headset and offer the appropriate solution.

I’m trying to find a repository of prior PiTool releases and prior Firmware releases as I’m having some issues with my 5K+ that I would like to fix. I’ve found a couple threads here that are not up-to-date and/or have broken links.
Where can I find a properly-maintained repository of releases so I can try different combinations?
Is there a rerelease firmware for Pimax 5K Super? I’ve run into the same issue after updating to Pitool 272 and it autoupdated my firmware. Just happened to me today and I submitted a ticket about it. I’m just learning that others have been having similar issues.

Apparently no re-release firmware for 5K Super. But after the meeting, our Pitool Team is now working to develop the firmware to resolve the found issues.
You may try to roll back to previous version FW, or ask the tech support to provide the file.

This is CRAZY !!! I just updated the PiTool to V1.0.1.272 because the current PiTool 270 recommends it. Then the new PiTool automatically flash a new firmware to my HMD, and BRICKED IT!!!
Can you believe the frustration I felt? I have been using my Pimax 5k super for months without an issue. Now a new PiTool comes along and ruins everything !
The worse kept coming. I use DFU.exe to flash the firmware back to 270 and the new PiTool running in the background is trying to update it again, so I have to click on “Cancel”. This time my Pimax 5K super is showing the dreaded Red, Green and Blue blinking lights.
I created a ticket for this, then I found their own instruction of how to unbrick the thing:
This solution is not for everyone. Hard for a computer newbie, but of course I am not one. So I shutdown the PiTool and PiService, followed the instructions and flashed the 270 firmware again. Then I immediately uninstall the new PiTool and put back the good old Pitool 270.
My Pimax came back from the death. The Pitool 270 updated my HMD to 271, which works just fine.
Now here is the big lesson for my misery:
DON’T UPDATE YOUR PITOOL UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN
I’m about too install the pitool 272 (coming from pitool 270) on my 5k+
I’m now at the firmware 2.1.255.271 and before doing anything I’d like to download this firmware (or to find it locally) in case I have to go back to it.

Agreed. These all seem to be betas. Think hard before you update.
I’m now successfully running the latest PiTool and firmware (after over 6 hours of painful effort). Even so, I have to reinstall PiTool 272 every time SteamVR stops detecting my headset. The reinstall (no uninstall or PC reboot is required) is a bit of a pain, but I am running my 8KX at 90 Hz with the 1/2 framerate option. It’s really good in Elite Dangerous: Horizons, but it was not worth the effort of upgrading.
I really hope that Pimax learns to properly test their software before releasing it. Until then, I recommend waiting at least a week and checking the forums, before you upgrade.

Are there any official release notes about new version? At least in order to know whether the update now or later gives any benefits?

A week?! Are you kidding? Maybe say wait a month or two, but not a week! 
A month later I’m still waiting for them to release a version of the latest software that has the proper firmware! They can’t even make a minor fix in a timely manor!
