Yesterday’s news. Really she made that comment here yesterday in this thread.
But nobody read it in Road To VR.
It isn’t unecessary. Whether intentional or not, it’s misleading. If Pimax want us to call the headset by that name then we want to make sure readers aren’t confused so we are clear to put 8K in quotes so they realize it may not mean what they think it means. If we just let this slide then it would lead to greater confusion.
To my knowledge I have not seen HTC call the Vive Pro a 3K headset.
Hi @benz145, would you be willing to be one of the Pimax 8k beta testers? I think you could help them a lot…
Then you would need to admit that the originater; StarVR saying their headset is 5k (2xQHD) created this false standard for the reasons of 2 displays not 4.
Cineliro(sp?), HeroVR followed suit. HeroVR interestingly claims its the first 5k even though StarVR beat them to rhe “5k”.
I personally don’t see an issue if we standardise the idea of a difference between “k vr” & k resolution.
8k VR = 76802160 not to be confused with
8k Resolution = 76804320
As VR headsets are not a standard display; they are special purpose displays.
Personally i think its a misnomer to add numbers together. The 8k in my opinion would be the first 4k headset as the per eye is 4k. Per eye is what we see overall. Why Oculus/Vive/Psvr doesn’t look as good as a standalone 1080p monitor.
It would be (a stretch maybe) but like adding the resolution together in a 3 lcd projector, if i understand the panels are layered?
EDIT: This is why we need a real vr summit to create a Standard on reporting vr headset specifications.
That include:
-Overall Resolution (gpu power req)
-Per Eye Res (what you see)
-FoV Horizontal & Vertical
-Sub Pixels Per Degree
-Brightness Lux or nits
-Contrast Ratio (real not dynamic)
-Latency
Resolution marketing terms are dumb anyway.
HD, full HD, QHD, UWQHD, UHD…
BTW, technically 38402160 is UHD and 4k is 4,0962,160 ( the Xk notation was first used for cinemas ), but no one cares.
True since “4k” was originally defined in photography. But it takes less space to use 2 to 3 characters then type the actual res each time. Lol
But yeah broadcast resolutions are actually less than true “k” res.
True 4k is now refered to Cinema 4k.
We measure a tv using it’s diagonal and include what is under the bezel ,l which we don’t see, in that number (sorta). We are capable of anything.
Also think that renaming the headset could be highly helpful. Almost every credible review I read started with a disclaimer about “8k” - an unnecessary negative start, even if the rest of the review should be positive.
What about Pimax 16MP (for 16.6 MPixel) or Pimax 8k/2 or Pimax Octa (for 8*FullHD) etc.?
This shouldn’t lead to wrong associations (8k is unfortunately hardwired as a 16:9 4x4k resolution in the brains of too many).
Better just a name, like all the rest. “Pimax Horizon” or something like that.
Pimax Horizon, Vista, Vision, Dive, Mirage…
DAMN. I so like the name “Horizon”. Pimax Horizon would be a great name, totally fits for this. This is perfect, i swear!
Just forget 5, 8, 200 in the name.
Awesome idea
PiMax Horizon formerly 5k
PiMax Horizon Pro formerly 8k
PiMax Horizon Elite formerly 8k-X
Or…
I dunno
Sounds cheesy as
Pimax Horizon Light = Pimax 5k
Pimax Horizon Max = Pimax 8k
Pimax Horizon Xtreme = Pimax 8k X
all with a touch of the 90’s
…Panorama, Scape, Angle, Edge
Angle / Angle Lite.
Pimax Horizon is an awesome name
Nah it’s from China i would call it Pimax ®ising†Dragon²*⁴™ just add some fins to the HMD and it looks like a Dragon head
Pimax Horizon , it would be a great name.
Any information about the final design of the hmd?
