Pimax Portal Disscusion

From from what I can understand it’s really hard to push so much pixels at the desired rate with the current chipsets. will stop here off topic sorry…

Agreed. Nothing we say here changes anything anyway. And it’s not the end of the world, though it’s a disappointment for sure. But we’ll just lower expectations again and see what they come up with later next year

The original release date for the 12k was q4 2022

I agree with this. I think they’re following an Xbox control pattern here, but I think they’d be much better off following a Playstation or SteamDeck control pattern especially because that will translate better into VR when these controls are put into the VR controller frames.

VR games almost unanimously use dual analog sticks for movement and having the the left and right be different and inevitably one of them be awkward to reach with your thumb while holding a VR controller is not great.

Pimax has a couple of hundred people in the business offices and three plants according to what they said at the MRTV interview earlier this year.

The 12K was originally announced at the end of 2021 to release in Q4 2022 (ie. now’ish). The Crystal was later announced to release in Q3 2022 (before the 12K). A two month long covid lockdown delayed the Crystal. Supposedly the first Crystals have been shipped recently suggesting that minus the covid delay, Pimax would have shipped the Crystal on time. Instead they’re about 1.5 months late.

Presumably the 12K was also delayed along with the Crystal by the covid lockdown, which would push it to Q1 2023. This has not been announced by Pimax, however. What was announced is that the 12K is “70%” complete as of the Crystal launch presentation. On another thread on this forum, Pimax has indicated that the 12K is actually at the same level of readiness as the Crystal save for one stubborn issue involving eye tracking at the largest FOV.

There has not been a revised official estimate of when the 12K will release. Pimax did not provide a target date for Portal either. I suspect that Pimax may have decided to stop declaring dates at all anymore, which is probably a good move for them. At least until they’re close enough to be fully confident in any date they talk about.

Supposedly that’s already been working on the 12K and is not what’s holding the 12K back from release at this time.

More positive impressions. His reaction is pretty much in line with my first impressions.

Was thinking that initially but the Nitendo switch lite use this pattern so maybe it’s not that much problem… but not not entirely convinced. The right index must bend in opposition with the thumb and ideally the palm and the 3 other fingers support the device.

 what did I just watch lol

Yeah, that part was a massive head scratcher. You really would want both controllers to be the same in VR, or maybe that’s just because it’s the way it has always been? But it’s not broken and it’s widely adopted so I’d say stick with what works there.

LOL. Interesting to watch the comments. Next to the obvious negative comments there were some positive ones too. But who made them?

  • “Joshua Son- Pimax”
  • “Joshua Dadad”

And then a few others which I find “suspicious” the least. Also this whole video feels like a paid advertisement.

Looks neat.

They’ve really rigged the pricing because as soon as you decide to get QLED, the VR adapter is only another 50 bucks. Now suddenly you’re at the highest tier :joy:

Some footage is appearing of the portal, it’s looking pretty promising imo.

(Above link is a video)

I’m still just really confused why the thumbsticks aren’t in the same location on both controllers (for the VR aspect, seems really weird).

Anyway, it’s looking like nice hardware. Have we heard yet if the VR functionality will be on show at the roadshow?

Will be interesting to hear just how bright and vibrant the screen is. Should know for sure after the MRTV roadshow

Also, the dev that posted this picture said they go to try the portal in VR mode also. I really wasn’t expecting it to be on show already, I thought it would be just the handheld mode. I guess the Portal is literally ready for production so maybe the kick starter will ship as early as Q1 2023.

Still waiting to hear their first impressions of the VR mode. We should see plenty this weekend from the first roadshow events but great to know that the VR mode will be on show!

Is it me or are Pimax crazy? 100 Thousand VR games? Some one better tell Pico!

As stated in our Frontier Event, we are not doing a normal crowdfunding campaign but pre-order, you have all the right to opt out and cancel the pledge anytime during or after the campaign without any cost.

Wow, that is one hell of catch-all from Pimax regarding the pre-order functionality at 0 risk even after the KS campaign has closed and funds are collected.

I find that extremely fair.

I also hope that I won’t be reading posts on this forum in 2025 about how some ‘backers’ still haven’t received their refund.
