Pimax looks to inside out tracking solutions in absence of 2.0 lighthouse availability

Just watching Kevin on VR roundtable. Pimax's Kevin Henderson | Live Bonus Episode - YouTube
As far as I can tell, some reading between the lines is required here but Pimax lighthouses are not going to be available any time soon if ever. It seems Kevin has been sent on a mission to some other potential partners to look into inside out tracking modules to make the Pimax not require light houses[that in itself suggest they can’t get them].
I’m reading between the lines here and just listening to Kevin we can see there’s nobody making lighthouse 2.0 tech in enough quantities for Pimax to buy or sell them.
He says luckily there are expansion slots to fit something else in “luckily” implying base stations are a no go :frowning:
Bear in mind in the absence of 2.0 lighthouses this would also render their knuckles controllers useless to pretty much everyone who didn’t already own a vive, or you will need to but a HTC lighthouse from somewhere.

Why does this matter ? Because you can currently leave a $300 deposit to pre order them on the pimax store no doubt refundable still, If they can’t source the components they really shouldn’t even be taking pre orders at this time :frowning: again here’s the link Pimax's Kevin Henderson | Live Bonus Episode - YouTube

Why wouldn’t valve make it’s lighthouses available to Pimax? Have Pimax done something to piss them off ?

Maybe Valve has a competing HMD coming soon

They seem to only be available in very limited quantities. I’m glad I bought a 1.0 base station.

I don’t understand why Valve is doing this. They should push SteamVR platform and their lighthouse as an ecosystem so they can get maximum software sales instead of holding back hardware partners.

I also purchased some version 1 lighthouse but I also purchased version 2 from Pimax so does @PimaxUSA what to clarify what you are talking about ?

So did Pimax ever have a partnership with Valve or did they just say they did ?

I watched the video , did Kevin say $800 bucks for a lighthouse?

Well I hope we are just taking Kevin out of context ?

I think the Valve licensing to use them may be prohibitively expensive perhaps, as Kevin said Pimax is about giving value for money or at least trying to, I guess if their partners leave no wiggle room they have to look for other solutions.

Pimaxs headset technology is built around lighthouse tracking .

Yes it is, but the 1.0 tech might be a different licensing or patent than the 2.0, something has to be going on otherwise there wouldn’t be an issue sourcing them in quantity.

So if Pimax cannot source lighthouses will backers get a credit ?

I guess so, PImax don’t seem to be out to rip anybody off  they would probably offer you an inside out tracking module instead or something I dunno, whatever it’s not going to be any time soon methinks

Second hand vives will go through the roof if this is true .

Well you can get a full vive kit now for £499 that’s for HMD 2x basestations and 2 controllers, I’d personally go that route then just sell the Vive on ebay, I got !150 for mine with the linkbox

Maybe HTC in protest, benefit…MONOPOLY

Yes but will Pimax keep supporting lighthouse tracking if they cannot get any ?

I guess so, it’s built in and they know a lot of their backers have 1.0 lighthouses. The benefits of 2.0 are quite specific anyway and only useful for certain case scenarios and not really the home use people generally do. We’re talkin possibly a year or two anyway my gut feeling anyway before they get anywhere near inside out tracking modules, I mean we’re still waiting on face foams, lense inserts and deluxe headstraps, they have foveated rendering, eye tracking and wireless all on the menu, this is a company who can’t send me a reset link for support in 28 days…don’t hold your breath buddy heheheh

I am looking at getting a Vive to cover me in the short term too. I actually thought I might sell one light house and one controller on as well so recover some costs and help another seated player get a solution too.

If we decide to just go with 1 or 2 V1 lighthouses from a Vive setup can we get another store credit/coupon for the $85 we pledged for each lighthouse and shipping?

It can go towards wireless and it takes some order pressure of Pimax as well.
