Pimax has a very serious Image Problem - People Gushing over the HP Reverb 2 Not the 8KX

Sorry this is simply not true, Pimax was view favorable by some media when they first presented at CES. Just look past article prior the kickstarter. Sure they were seen has junior outsiders from a small China startup but they were. After that the the delay, lie or halft truth about the refresh rate of the 8K, distorsion and failed units in reviews and CES demo crash in 2019.

even then Upload VR still had some good will in reserve

The problem with Pimax even if they are trying very hard to push VR standards and make the backers happy is PImax.

Just this morning, hidden in many many post Kevin report that the 949$ op-out deal limited to 500 units is also limited to old op-out deal choosen after the now even

Kevin:
https://community.openmr.ai/t/pimax-now-tldr-summary-page-aftershow-q-a-summary/28863/93?u=frc

Alway the same pattern joy follow by some deception, don’t you think this kind of information should have been presented in the Pimax now event not after burried in the forum… I understand the 500 units limits for the new deal but appling this to old deal also pressure backers to chose before external review.

My experience with Pimax is both good and bad

8K delay and limited spec reach : Bad
5K+ with 100$ downgrade : Good!
5K+ bad cable and crack : Bad!
5k+ change for 40CAN$ shipping cost : Good
new 5K+ has still some crack : Bad
Pimax offer RMA for second headset (I refused) : Good
100$ coupon after 2 years can still be applied to anything I want : Bad

So I fully inderstand the “negativity” of some reviewers

Not retroactively, just 500 new ones. If it were retroactive we are multiple times past 500 units and the entire offer would already be over. The team didn’t decide to put a cap on it until *after the event.

Ok, but Kevin not your fault but those kind of details should have been know before the Now event not after. Now we are press to select a plan before extrenal neutral review from third party of the final 8K-X

Been her a long time and it’s always like that… ;-( will edit my post to reflect your comment accordinly. But please ajust info on sticked post

I’m sure we’ll work the various new info into the next regular update.

F Chris Roberts he is why I would never fund a kick starter ever!

Why? It’s just that people need to know what’s actually happening and the sole motivation is not to get a reduced price…

Hi I’m not great with numbers. Is the pixel density higher on an HP G2 or an 8kx? I understand taking the fov into account. Which would give a sharper image of say your hands in half-life? Thank you.

Since 2017, i have every weekend a lot of fun

My experience with Pimax is good and bad:

Pledged for 8K but downgraded to 5k+ which when I received it was very unstable and half the time wouldn’t connect. This was replaced after a time and the new one has worked fine for 18 months with only the cable being replaced in the meantime.

However after the 18 months my left panel broke and started repeating pixels of bright objects right across the panel(I haven’t heard of anyone else getting this problem). I contacted Pimax but was told that it could not be fixed and the 5K+ was past warranty so that was that. After a bit more contact I was told that it might be possible to send a new panel and they would check with the engineers. I am no engineer and had also in the meantime upgraded using Plan C to an 8K+ for which I managed to use my coupon for downgrading to 5K+. Later however I got an email saying the coupon was invalid and I had to pay the difference. I thought maybe they could accommodate me a bit in the circumstances but that wasn’t to be.

I also warning about buying a pimax headset, especially for newcomers, but it’s not because Pimax HMDs are bad, they are not a all, but they are hard to setup & get maximum from them, so it’s why it’s suitable only for a some kind of people with technical background or which willing to jump in & try to do lot of tinkering, forums reading to achieve the best experience.

I don’t mean Pimax HMDs are too overcomplicated, it’s really easy to setup once you get HMD & start some game (if Pitool has no bugs lol, which wasn’t case for me when I got my 5k+ at 2019/12, it ended in 7 hours debugging, but it’s rare case I never had such an issue later, including experience with my new 5k XR)

But you know it’s not a complete product until recent changes with smas/das & comfort kit, you need to buy strap, audio, base stations & controllers at least to start enjoy it, on top of it you need to optimise your performance settings, be aware about different 3d nvidia settings (or radeon like antialising & other onces that drastically affects the picture quality & performance) also PC specs much more higher than on other HMDs, it’s just too way expensive, but price tag is fair enough, on top of it the FOV is what makes it hard to setup & adjust on head to get picture look good & make it distortionless, I believe there is some % of ppl who won’t be able to achieve distortion wise good picture due to physiological specifics. So if a person is an average user who doesn’t care about those things - just skip it & get something mainstream, it’s the advice, it’s not coz Pimax is afwful & it’s a scam, it’s not, it’s really decent HDM.

But it’s like a constructor KIT, I would recommend it for people who consider some current mainstream HMD problems like FOV, comfort, modularity, weight, exposed settings (as mainstream HMD don’t provide it apart of few ones, in steam vr it’s better than on Oculus in terms of settings exposing but still poor, e.g you can’t achieve true black on Vive Pro & it kills some really dark scenes, on Pimax there are lot of updates & developers implement some features that were requested by community), also for people with vision issues pimax allows to mitigate some of the issues by having that great IPD software offsets (vertical, horizontal) on top on physical IPD adjustment, also lenses are different a bit & you can achieve more 3D immersion, but it’s subjective & strongly settings dependent, also refresh rates, great pixels density & SDE along with some other minor benefits.

But it should never be your first HMD IMO, you need to have hassle free HMD as well to enjoy your VR & tinker once you have a mood for it, in a while you can end in having your Pimax as a daily driver. Sure there is tiny percentage of people who will be able to cope with it as a first HMD & probably will enjoy it, but it a big money burn lottery (but you always can sell it).

In this regards Index or Quest are rock solid & are very good hassle free HMDs (apart of Quest’s comfort issues)

Also one of the others most important factors for me due to which I won’t reccomend Pimax HMD are poor contrast & blacks, Index has same issues, colours good & contrast better on Index but it’s still not as good as on OLED, but Im in the OLED camp & there are many ppl that don’t care about it. So I don’t include it usually in my reccomendations.

Almost exactly the same pixels per degree, it goes a very tiny percentage in either direction depending on what panel usage you assume, which we don’t know exactly for either (and can be affected by e.g. IPD setting or thickness of face foam)

Honestly I personally think one of the main problems is that some Pimax employees seem to think that running a business is like politics. It’s not and in fact it’s really something different.

An example is a game they sometimes play at some sororities: one guy has to make a case why broomsticks actually should come with 2 sticks and the other guy should defend the 1 stick version and the rest of the group decides who won the debate. That’s politics. It’s not about who has the right product for the customer, it’s purely about trying to convince people it’s the right product. I have a feeling that this is a lot of time what’s happening here. And it doesn’t work. There’s a reason people don’t trust (and oftentimes hate) politicians.

That’s not business though. Business is about 2 questions: who is my customer and how do I serve best his needs. It’s not about ‘trying to own a narrative’ (=politics), but it starts with researching and listening to customers. And that’s not done by sticking a camera under a customers nose at CES cause they’ll mostly just tell you what they think you’ll want to hear.

Trying to run a business as a politician causes a lot of anger and frustration and that’s exactly what you don’t want. So Pimax, don’t use a forum like this like a politic tool, use it as a tool to get to know your customers, listen to them, enable them, service them.

Just my 2 cents although this is what they’ll tell any business student at a good university.

I think what you describe as politics is called marketing? Which is a more thankful job if product management succeeded in coming up with products that the customers actually want and that are better than the competition at least in some aspects and in any way, shape or form desirable.
Think the Pimax marketing guys don’t have to pretend being convinced of their product, I think they really like many of them - at least the final revisions.

No. Marketing is actually what they should do. Marketing is the whole process about collecting information and communication with your customer (a definition that’s typically used at business universities can be found here What is Marketing? — The Definition of Marketing — AMA)

It all starts with listening to your customers. What we see on this forum and also in other places is the contrary: Pimax has a narrative and people who don’t agree to that narrative will be welcomed with (passive) aggression, hoping they’ll go away (or at least shut up) so that they can keep up the narrative. The result is that A) the customer still doesn’t have what he wants and B) the customer gets angry.

Like topic starter says, there’s a lot of negativity towards Pimax and in my opinion a lot of that is caused exactly by that wrong type of thinking.

Every compagny is annnoing for customers now and then Apple, IBM, HP, facebook. Breville, HTC etc even small ones who tend to be more related to the customers. but one basic rule if you publish a deal you must :

1 : clairly state; How much, and when the deals begins when it ends and is apply to what and don’t change anything until completed.

secondo: try to keep the deal simple, for example the 100$ 5k+ downgrade coupon

Buy 350$US or more in our Pimax store on articles at regular price in the next 3 years and get 100$ rebate. not applicable with any other rebate.

People would probably have purchase the hand trancking and some other small goodies they would’nt have purchase alone and Pimax avoid telling no to customers.

Pimax always fail these simples rules and get much frustration from customers from this.

Thank you for the reply. I can’t wait to see the 8KX. Sebastian footage of the G2 was very impressive. Hopefully we will see lots more footage of the 8KX shortly.

Ok, probably a matter of role definition. I was also puzzled about some decisions in the past but the recent behavior is imho promising. They cannot instantly get rid of their legacy and (fortunately) not reset the memory of people, but I don’t know what they should have done different this time than what they did with the Pimax NOW event and related activities. If they can keep it. What probably was the reason for the delay of the event, to make this as likely as possible. Let’s see.

I understand your point, but I respectfully disagree. It depends on whether or not you are comfortable with the challenges of being on the bleeding edge of technology.

My 8K was my first VR headset. It was the only HMD that I felt was good enough for me to enjoy VR. Yes, it has taken some effort to reach its full potential, but I’m glad I bought it and I look forward to my second headset, the 8KX.
