Pimax Crystal - status, updates and fixes (Part 2)

They had the sample weeks before the show, it has a cutoff to be considered.

The issue with these pre-show procedures is that they give a sense of intransparency, and one tends to think that taking into account the reaction of the journalists and public visitors should weigh in on the results too. But this isn’t the fault of Pimax, so good for them that they got this award.

It‘s just that the perceived value of such an award is unnecessarily diminished by this approach.

Very well said @Axacuatl as usually. If the award would be based on visitor votes, then it would mean something! Now one can’t help but think it’s just a deal made behind closed doors. Like paid advertisement. Which might not even be the case but because of that total lack of transparency one just can’t help but think that the actual visitors probably would have ruled otherwise.

Is the award for not running around in Kevin’s rented car looking for PC parts to borrow to show off a semi working prototype to 4 people in a Vegas alley?

No no my friend, this year they had the tent for that sort of thing. We are Pimax, we go to big show, we have little tent at big show, we pay lots of money for big show, we pay little money for little tent. In little tent big secret, big secret little NDA contract.

I literally don’t know why any company would do that. Instead you have to go to the Shiftall booth and see their prototype and get blown away. Sad thing is they dont get an innovation award because Megan X is not on sale yet. At least not the new version.

By the way… Did somebody say that that “tent”, made out of the most light-weight grade of tarp, was supposed to somehow (rather than being for confidentiality), shield the wi-gig module, and all the other wireless traffic at the venue, from one another? Mr. Faraday might have been mightily impressed by the materials available today…

Haha does pimax ever make sense? I honestly don’t understand the reason for a huge booth when all you have to show is a device that’s already been out since 8 months… Doesn’t seem money well spent to me. Admittedly I’ve never even visited CES myself but when I look for CES news I want to learn about new devices. That’s what CES is about imho, a glimpse into the (near) future. Not stuff that’s been out for months. And I would feel cheated paying plane tickets, hotel and entrance to find only old stuff.

So true. Especially when Pimax had stated by their COO the 12k would be there. Why oh why not tell people sorry its not ready it will not be there.

At 40 minutes MRTV asks ‘You will show it at CES 2024 for sure.’ Nordic says ‘yes’.

Haha yeah and what exposure did they get out of this? If you search on youtube there’s almost nothing. Which, again, makes perfect sense because they didnt have anything new to show, nobody cares about old products at CES, nobody will make a video about “WOW look at this thing that I’ve found at CES which btw has been out for 8 months now” LOL

And a booth doesn’t come cheap: https://www.inc.com/ilya-pozin/what-it-costs-to-exhibit-at-ces.html
Also see the quote in the article “Would you spend $150,000 to be at CES? If you would, make sure that investment is worth it” LOL.

Only in Pimax world this makes any sense. Sad thing is of course they could also have used that money for something like lens design.

When you’re given 30 million who cares, $150,000 on a Innovation award is money well spent.

The 12X was sort of there - but just one video spoke about it. It was still more a proof of concept, the Crystal with 2 6K screens I guess. Probably they asked most people to either sign an NDA or just due to the very rough state of the prototype nobody really wanted to say anything about it because it is too far away from a real product at this stage.

Why Pimax chose a booth of this size without demoing anything else than the Crystal, with the only bit of news/innovation being the WiGig module, is slightly weird. You can‘t help but think that at the time of booking the booth their plans were different, and the 12K might have been intended to be the star of the their show. But even for Pimax‘ standards, which in this respect are the lowest from any company I know, it apparently was still too rough & unfinished. So they ended up with an elephant stage and a mouse announcement of new products. That‘s life.

Do you think Hypervision VR, either in their own HMD and or the same tech in competitor’s HMDs may play a role for PIMAX to pivot?

I just watched the MRTV 60gig video again and did Seb let the cat out of the bag?

He stated the resolution was 6988x8192. Now that seems right in for a 6k panel and barrel distortion profile.

Was Seb on the Crystal 12k already? Pimax might be testing people to see if they can tell the difference before telling them what they had on.

I think there’s several factors. VR-1 being the first.

If Hypervision use 4 2560x2560 micro OLEDs they’ll have to wait for a 50xx series cards imo with DP2.1.

Third reason for a 12k Crystal. To delay the trade in programme for annother 24 months. Keep the Crystal 12k out of the trade in programme.

My pure guesstimate.

Q4 2024 - Pimax Crystal 12k v Varjo Aero2
Q4 2025 - Pimax Ultra Wide 12k v Hypervision

Mind you, I would expect a 2x6k-equipped SKU of the Crystal, with lenses that are not radically different, and that is intended for retail (…as opposed to just a tech demo, which could be presumed to give no extra PPD over the regular one, and to not make use of the full panel), to have displays with different aspect ratio, to that of a wide FOV device.

He was in the same tent the other person’s video mentioned as the place that person got the 12K demo. So yes, it will be a Crystal with 2x6K screens. Sweviver said ages ago that the 12K will re-use 70% of Crystal parts, so its arbitrary when we say a Crystal with 2x6K screen or the 12K. It‘s just obviously not yet a real feature complete prototype of the 12K, and Pimax apparently didn‘t even want to publicly call it a demo of the 12K.

Lets differentiate 12k.

Original 12k - 2x6k panel, hybrid Aspheric/Fresnel lenses with Ultra Wide 220FoV.

Yet unannounced Crystal 12k - same 2x6k panels but with Aspheric Lenses and limited 120-140FOV.

Well apparently they did show off th Wigig at this s stage

But agreed doesn’t seem like much new for pimax at ces. Not even a surprise hmd.

On a different note non CES I believe.

A minute-long mention of the 12K aspheric-fresnel lenses in this presentation on VR Optics and lens design, from 5:55 to 6:53 in this video:

One drawback which I hadn’t heard of before was “low peripheral light efficiency”

So the big FoV lenses are going to be $129.99
