G2 looks comfortably competitive in it’s sweet spot but once you get out of that, you can see the crystal maintains that clarity better across the image. Enough for me to swap out my G2 for simracing and deal with Pimax? Of course not.
Wooah shots fired at Pimax!! Varjo just reduced the Aero price to $990
Not just Pimax BTW, also Valve and BSB will get some pressure from this. Which is great for us, the VR users
Wow that’s a great price, just over £1k all in.
That great, this is the price what all highend vr headsets much be around…
Let the price war between highend vr headsets begin!
Yeah, I’ve always said BSB is overpriced. That needs to come down to a realistic £800. Even the Visor with 4k displays is only £750.
That is impressive. Imagine they might be clearing out the old aero for maybe an Aero 2?
Or that the R&D has finally been paid off and have reduced the price point. Either way this will definitely shake things up. The greatest barrier of Varjo Aero being lifted.
This is unrealistic to be honest. The RnD alone is what gets costs for these units so high. Not to mention this is a small company and would kill it slowly. You must remember, Varjo is also military funded, so they are not losing much as their high end headsets with subscription costs are enough to put their profit in the millions. Pimax does not have this luxury.
Was this the only thing they announced? I thought they were making a new headset?
Most likely a new Aero V2 will be announced soon. Makes sense they keep selling the old model at a reduced price
At that price it does become an option, I have to say. The general build quality is very good, which would be such a welcome experience after having dealt with product s of a certain other manufacturer for a couple of years now. But of course it would be FoV hell.
And - is there any good audio solution for the Aero by now? What I really really don’t like is to have to put on InEars or an audio headset as it makes the handling so much more tedious.
I believe no varjo home solution.
So either buds, overhead(not very likely compatible eith head strap design) or creating 3dprinted clips to maybe use Quest strap audio add ons maybe?
What’s the current state of the Aero? There was a lot of chroma issues around launch and I know they were working on the software to fix it. Just curious how stable the image is now. I recall the FoV being a little bigger than the G2?
Aero chromatic aberations are completely fixed with an external tool that you have to download
It is really tempting, I have to say. I wish I paid more attention to the Aero when I was at the Pimax roadshow stop at MRTV! But I had ruled it out due to the price combined with missing audio and small FoV. But I recall that I liked the picture being so clean as compared to the convergence issue I had with the Crystal prototype. I just don’t recall anymore if I would be okay to accept the FoV or not…
But on the other hand, I am using the G2 currently and it is said to be pretty similar (though different in shape). Add the fact, that I could use my Lighthouse tracking and Index controllers with it, hmmmm…
But still need a satisfactory audio solution ideally permanently attached to the Aero.
And, of course the other big question is: will Varjo release an Aero 2 soon? And how long to wait for that to happen?
Thing that puts me off the Aero is no Mic which is a must for Population One. Not an issue for simmers though.
I think Aero 2 is definitely on the cards.
Yeah, they really dropped the ball on the audio & mic part, hard to comprehend what they were thinking. Make it removable for those who need headphones which cost you a grand, but offer something better than cheap InEars for those who just want an all-in-one solution for God‘s sake!
Thank you @Heliosurge for suggesting that they send me the PC lenses for evaluation, but they would have to send me the complete Pimax Crystal headset for a better evaluation, and Pimax is not going to do that, because they don’t want to hear my opinions.
Here is a very good review (in Spanish):
Cheers,
Neo
Yeah I suspect a lot of companies might want to avoid certain levels of scrutiny.
As the video is long do you have some recommended key points in time?
Looks like the cc in english will work.nicely otherwise.
- Performance: The VR headset runs most games smoothly, except for a few like Flight Simulator and F1 2023, which require high-end hardware. The software has some issues, such as getting stuck in menus, but it offers a lot of customization options.
- Tracking: The headset offers both default tracking and compatibility with Valve Lighthouse tracking. The tracking has some limitations, especially when the user’s hands are behind their back or above their head. However, it’s expected that improvements will be made in the future.
- Battery: The battery life is compared to another device, the Pico, which has a slightly larger battery. The battery life is decent, but there’s a significant inconvenience when the battery runs out during PCVR use.
- Sound: The sound quality is decent but not exceptional. The speakers don’t provide the depth and richness that some users might expect.
- Display and Clarity: The display offers excellent clarity, but sometimes this clarity feels underutilized. The high resolution is sometimes not fully taken advantage of in certain games or applications.
- Software and Games: The headset’s software offers a lot of customization, but it’s not without its flaws. The game library is currently limited, which might deter some potential buyers.
- Weight and Comfort: One of the significant drawbacks is the headset’s weight, which can be uncomfortable during extended use. This is especially concerning given the emergence of lighter and more comfortable VR headsets in the market.
- Price and Value: The video suggests that given the headset’s price, there are certain expectations regarding performance, comfort, and features. While the headset offers a lot, there are areas where it falls short, especially when considering its cost.
- Conclusion: The VR headset has a lot of potential and offers many features that VR enthusiasts might appreciate. However, there are areas where it needs improvement, especially considering its price point. The video encourages viewers to weigh the pros and cons before making a purchase.
All a very fair well rounded review. ROV imho and xp does indeed provided nice quality reviews.
Thanks for the cliff notes! Very much appreciated.
