Pimax Crystal - status, updates and fixes (Part 2)

Pico 4 is absolutely brilliant, didn’t know it has hand tracking. Personally I prefer my Quest pro, and got it for almost the same price, but Pico 4 would be my go to recommendation for people looking to get into PCVR right now. If budget isn’t an issue then the crystal would be my suggestion though, assuming the person is technically minded.

Yeah really none of the existing and/or known upcoming headsets gets me excited. BSB looks nice but the upscaling at 90 hz s*cks as does the FoV for my IPD (70). So probably won’t get it. Crystal, meh, not looking for another brick on my head. Apple VR, bah, not for gaming, and price seems really steep for what you get. VR1, not sure what to think about that but I’m skeptical.

I guess the good news is better and better panels are coming to market, 3k-4k per eye is becoming the standard in the high end segment and lighter headsets definitely seem to be the trend. So the future looks good, but we’ll have to wait, AGAIN

Seems like the firmware update fixed the audio latency. Did anyone else notice

Hard to notice when my Crystal is still on 1.2.2 0628 and haven’t had any updates for weeks. I received controller firmware updates a few days ago, but haven’t tested them since I’ve only been racing/flying in VR.

I haven’t measured the audio latency on my Crystal firmware, but I’d say it’s at least 100ms if not more.

Pimax no longer offer an extra set of lenses. It’s been removed from their website. You only get one set in the box.

How it looks now.

How it use to look.

I’m not sure why this hadn’t been announced officially by Pimax.

All those early unboxing reviews like MRTV are now wrong and personally they should be removed to avoid confusion.

It’s gone from you have an extra pair of 42PPD lenses to just an extra pair of lenses to no pair of extra lenses.

I mean. The right thing to do is this:

If they found it wasn’t feasible to produce their 42PPD lenses, they need to bite that bullet and man-up and announce they’re not providing the extra set, and thus provide a discount (refund) on the price of the headset to compensate.

OR, provide their new larger FoV GLASS lenses in place of the 42PPD lenses at no additional cost.

I mean, this reneging is basically a bait and switch tactic.

If one ordered the Crystal at the time when second set of lenses was still advertised, Pimax still promises to deliver the 42ppd set at a later date. Or alternatively they offer a discout cupon or a discount for the future wide-FOV lenses (the wide FOV lenses are more expensive to manufacture than 42ppd ones, so no free 1-to-1 substitution).

Someone over at Pimax should edit their amazon.de offering ASAP in that case.

So the Crystal is available now from Amazon Germany? It’s not yet on the UK Amazon (just checked).

I couldn’t find it on Amazon.de

It was back on July 19th: https://pimax.com/crystal-notice/

Clearly it wasn’t the original intention though, it was never presented as a pre-order bonus before afaik.

Yeah. Well, that doesn’t really work for me.

Not going to drop my money right now on uncertainties. I don’t care if the wide-FOV lenses cost them more. Why should I blindly believe anything they say when they keep shifting things around.

My trust level in the company is quite low, so…

But hey, that’s me. You can do you. shrug

It’s not like these extra lenses or DMAS can be bought separately either. Who knows when the wide FOV lenses are ready especially if Pimax are maxed out producing the normal FOV lenses.

We’re in August and we haven’t seen one demo of the wide FOV lenses yet.

If the DMAS is no longer free and you can’t buy it separately where is it? Lol

So is anyone going to buy Crystal now knowing you have to buy a non existent DMASto get quality audio, knowing you need spend more to replace the in the box lenses to get the wide FOV lenses in order to get anywhere near the advertised FOV?

Strange Pimax world.

Sounds like a fair assessment of all things Pimax and reasonable advice.

As much as I like PiMax as I have a 8KX and a Crystal and it makes know difference to me which extra lens I get as I’ll pay for the wide FOV one. They are doing people wrong now. I would have to agree with you.

Hasn’t been available on the U.S. Amazon store for at least a year.
Japan Amazon doesn’t show the DMAS at all.

Don’t see the DMAS offered yet in PIMAX website themselves.

I honestly couldn’t call it encouraging for anyone wanting to get a Crystal and have the appropriate level of audio quality for the price commitment for the product.
