Pimax Crystal - status, updates and fixes (Part 2)

and software wise what to expect, did they do anything before?at least with pimax you know what to expect and eventually stuff gonna work.

I guess in order to understand Pimax‘ thinking process we would need to go back to the 12K. Anything the Crystal offers goes back to the 12K as a starting point, where they probably recognized a number of significant hurdles along the development path to the 12K and figured that the Crystal would be a good intermediate step solving some of the easier challenges and giving them a new product to earn money with while solving the remaining challenges of the 12K.

Perhaps they expect the monstrous resolution of the 12K to demand a SoC with XR2 or higher computing power to be able to decompress/upscale the data feed in tethered mode, given the bandwidth limitations.

They should create an aggressively redesigned spin-off the Crystal as a pure PC VR device with as little weight & as few components as possible.

Wireless would have been great though, but as we can see it doesn‘t seem to pan out anyhow, as IIRC both the Wifi6 feature and the WiGig alternative are hardly even being mentioned by Pimax anymore in their recent status updates.

But we’ve seen the VR-1 produce 128FoV. That’s 25FoV bigger than Crystal. Prices being equal that’s enough to take every HMD sale away from Pimax.

Crystals stand-alone capability is a joke.

As for prices, all Bigscreen Beyond needs to do is lower their prices. I think they have way more margin to allow a sub $1000 HMD to flood the PCVR market in 2024 dependant on how sales go.

I updated it to 0628 from 0426. It still gives me a black screen as the 0608. I don’t know what’s wrong with it. It’s something software related because on 0426 everything just works.

Only concern with vr1 is stereo overlap, it’s very low. Not hard to increase horizontal fov by reducing stereo overlap

This killed my enjoyment of Vive Pro 2 the most expensive single headset I’d bought at that point, it was returned (thanks Amazon)

The stereo overlap of the VR1 is 88 degrees. How is that low?

The stereo overlap is 84 degrees on my G2 and I don’t have a problem with it.

Edited: Your vr1 screenshot actually shows 65.11% (This was from their CEO on twitter)

Where does your figure of 88 degree come from?

That is a percent sign, telling us how much of the total visible area is overlapped. I get 88 by adding 44 degrees plus 44 degrees in the image.

Here is the Varjo Aero at 69 degrees.

I returned my Crystal before this tool was released so unfortunately I don’t have the data for it. Maybe someone can share their results here who has a Crystal?

Thanks for the correction it’s been a long day :+1:

My index gives me stereo overlap of 76.41%

My crystal gives me stereo overlap of 74.03%

My Ipd 63.5mm

No problem.

What overlap in degrees do you get for the index and crystal?

So the main reason for the standalone functionality is to use the XR2 for controller tracking and wireless VR, both of which are essential for my use cases (I go between two different rooms regularly and travel a lot). So a headset like bigscreen beyond doesn’t appeal as much to me because it requires base stations and a wire. Now, has Pimax delivered the promise yet? No, but I’m hoping. The latest controller update helped a lot even though it’s not perfect still but wireless isn’t here at all yet.

That’s the ideal Pimax customer spirit: keep hoping and eventually there will be the announcement of a ridiculously delayed product that promises to fulfill just what you hated about their current product, but alas project management is actually a worthwhile skil and hence no resources will be attributed to whatsoever with a sad pikachu apology letter every 18 months from that CEO muppet. Rinse and repeat. How people continue to fall for this BS is a lot less perplexing by now than it is entertaining :joy:

latest controller update aint done crap lol,i can make the exact same video with them occluding when you aim a gun and going to reach for a mag the controller goes out of existence and comes back without a mag grabbed, didnt unpair this time but once i saw the tracking aint improved i gave up after 5 minutes.

my floor is wrong everytime i turn on the headset still, not sure its because i have it on the desk and detects the desk as the floor.

we really need the steam plate i dont think there is much hope for these controllers, just like g2 it improved over time but it was always still unusable.

yep after i tested more and more, indeed its because it detects my desk as the floor sometimes on wake up or when booted, rested it with clear view of the floor and i didnt had the floor issue in 5 6 boots.

controllers still go out randomly but they come back from shaking(i guess it goes to sleep too fast)but now it doesnt take a full hmd restart anymore to come back.

Agreed Ash’s Pikachu is quite sad never wanting to evolve into his next form.

Hmm… you didn’t set ot up on the desk during calibration? Oh on hmd wake up it is doing a weird recalibration. :picardfp:

For controllers if you have dongles just use the Patched OpenVR Space Calibrator. No need to keep waiting on the SteamVR FP.

huh?ofc not i put in on the floor when i set up the floor and type 0 like the 8kx,i had a pimax for 3 years now what do you think?the crystal just forgets about it the next boot or wake up and detects the desk as the floor, something the 8kx never did.

if i had the dongles obviously i would throw these in the box already and never touch them im waiting for a tundra dongle, either way the dongles do not fix the floor issue the plate will.
