Okay, but for me these two are distinctly different features: while it is obvious that stand-alone operation will not require any tethering because it is all processed within the SoC in the headset, if we talk wireless we mean to refer to the mode of operation where there is wireless transmission of the rendered images between a remote computing unit, e.g. a PC running SteamVR, and the headset.
For me as someone who is primarily interested in using this headsets for PC VR, stand-alone operation is largely irrelevant while wireless would be one key improvement for my experience as a PC VR gamer.
If you pronounce it in English, PI could sound like PEE
But considering the company logo is the π symbol, that’s pronounced as PIE in English. Like… Apple Pie
So yea, in Japanese it should be: パイマックス
But then I start to think more. If they’re thinking the symbol π & they’re thinking MAX to be Maximum.
Then that’s MAXIMUM PI(π) This does not make sense. Is there such a thing really?
Since PI (π) is an irrational number, it means it infinitely continues on and doesn’t repeat.
So, in mathematical terms, π∞ (π infinity)
AFAIK there is no agreed MAXIMUM value of PI (π).
Meaning, a concensus that enough is enough and we don’t need to go out more than 15 decimals (for example).
So… Saying PI MAX doesn’t make any sense. It should be PI INFINITY.
But some may argue on this forum, comically, that it’s PI IRRATIONAL
Oh yes, absolutely. I didn‘t mean to suggest that you should take it off your list. They‘ll be held to the specs they advertize, no discussion here.
I was just essentially preparing the ground for something a Pimax veteran has learned to do: look at what has been verified by independent sources to work on a Pimax headset, and make your purchasing decision entirely based on these proven features. They might get around to making other promised features work over time, but that‘s more a 50/50.
I just read from a bloke, who had considered getting the Quest Pro to bridge the time to get a better shiny new toy that he read in the Virtual Desktop discord that the main reason for the Quest Pro not being able to properly utilize the boost in data throughput of Wifi6e was the XR2 chip, as that is apparently limited to 200 m/bit per second for decompression.
I wonder what that means for wireless on the Crystal? As it shares the same chip, perhaps even a less performant version than the Quest Pro has, wouldn‘t that become a bottle-neck too? I mean if the band-width of e.g. Wigig was enough to avoid compression & decompression altogether, it wouldn‘t be an issue, but if it is required? Anybody have some grasp of this who can give some perspective?
I have a WiFi6 Router only. I was hoping that I’d be able to get SOMETHING running under that environ with the Crystal. I think there are other headsets that can do WiFi6.
The 200m/bit decompression I thought (overheard) that it had something to do more with AMD GPUs vs the headset itself.
I suppose I’d just do WiGig at this point if I REALLY want to stream from PC to Headset wirelessly.
I suppose this makes sense if there are certain things you can sideload or get access to purely on a native level JUST on the headset itself, like (Beatsabre?).
The problem is that symbol PI is pronounced wrong in English as it is from Greek and correctly pronounced [pee]. You cannot normalize everything by British/American ignorance
Besides its many implications in math, PI also denotes an angle value in radians, corresponding to 180˘. Which has certain connotation in VR. Even though Pimax has already surpassed it many times, the others are still struggling to achieve that, so a bold goal nevertheless.
Oh, I don’t doubt that the pronunciation of PI in its origin language doesn’t sound like it does in English.
At this point, whichever is the most common use and pronunciation of this globally is probably a good move from a marketing perspective… I respect the origins, however, if its pronunciation is more commonly known by a global language, then it’ll likely be better identified by a greater amount of people.
Oh. Excuse me for being ‘ignorant’, if that was what you were indeed implying.
Okay. Latest update did some absolute black magic to the audio. DMAS now legitimately, honestly, seems like it may’ve dethroned the Index as the audio king when it comes to speakers. Least two other testers besides me think the audio quality’s now insane, including one who had an Index, and that was their current favorite a large part due to the audio, on them to do a side by side comparison and they thought the Crystal was better.
You took it wrong. I do not object English speakers pronouncing PI however they want, even if it is wrong. I was objecting the argument that the Japanese transcription of the name was wrong, because it is pronounced differently in English. Pimax actually transcribed it right (if the Pi in the name is a connotation to the Greek letter, which we may assume is, considering Pimax itself uses it in its marketing).
I have some background in math, and never heard PI in my native language pronounced differently from its Greek original pronunciation, I would assume it would be true for most European languages. Why English chose differently I can only speculate, but my guess would be that [pee] already has very different meaning (and connotation).
First, shame DMAS does not come with the Crystal as standard as the speakers on the Index are built in. Second where can you even buy a pair of DMAS? I can’t find them on the Pimax store.
Huh, yeah it’s not on their website now. Guess probably stockpiling stock for the pre-order gift on the Crystal?
Nobody’s tested to see how the audio is on the SMAS v2 yet since the newest update. It could’ve gotten a lot better too and might not feel like a terrible option then, or maybe Pimax could’ve been focusing on the DMAS with this current update. Maybe some of us will try it later. Even if it’s not literal industry leading quality, if it can get in the ballpark of where the Vive DAS/Pro audio solutions sit then think it’ll be a perfectly acceptable stock solution.
To be clear, in case anyone on an 8KX is thinking to try and find one, it seems like it’s the DMAS on the Crystal specifically due to the upgraded audio hardware within the actual HMD.
It is at least a syart there trying to advertise it. But the Video is lacking to actually show it is using Standalone mode. Showing the in hmd vr launcher launching something would be a start.
