The index area is 115 FOV horisontally. Thats basically the binocular overlap area of Pimax. Which has no distortion. Can you see distortions on Small FOV? (120-125 FOV) I don’t.
Ah yeah of course, the distortion will be lower if you lower the FoV. But why buy a Pimax if you want low FoV … I always run my 5k+ at ‘normal’ FoV and experience pretty much exactly what can be seen on the photos above. To me it always felt distracting (especially in movement, while turning your head, because objects bend like rubber, like demonstrated in the photo). But it seems that we’re all different in this matter.
But regardless if it bothers you, I’m glad that FINALLY distortion could be demonstrated on a photo.
With respect, i experience the opposite to what you say.
With the pimax, the spot I have to get my eyes in to look clear & comfortable feels more awkward & takes more tweaking for me on pimax. On index, it takes about a second to get it right once I put the hmd on.
Also the other night I had my 5k out & switched between that & the index a couple times over the period of 2 - 3 hours.
When I put my index back on I saw lower down writing on menus which appeared to be out of the pimax clear spot, which was still clear in the index clear spot.
I’m not going to say you are a liar as I have believe that we don’t all see the same thing when we put hmds on.
I mean some people have no problems with the pimax lens whatsoever, but others find them unusable.
I’m somewhere in the middle.
I dont really notice distortion unless I look for it, but I do have to keep fiddling & moving the pimax throughout a play session.
Also I had to bring the bottom of the pimax out quite a bit in order for it to be clear.
I also think that due to face shape, eye depth etc… experiences vary & I believe maybe the index lens sweet spot for me naturally falls in the center of my pupils whereas the pimax sweet spot lens center likely doesn’t fall as naturally making me move it & fiddle with it more
Exactly. Plus that the distortion on the Pimax varies with the position on your head. So it takes a lot of experience and moving it around to get it to the level with the least distortion. While on the Index it’s not even a concern, it’s distortion free over the whole lens. You can move it around like you want, it stays distortion free
I tried to catch it better:
8k-X vs Index
And I can actually understand why some don’t even see it. It’s not a night/day thing. The distortion effect causes only ‘slight’ curvation (like demonstrated by the yellow line). But to my brain it immediately feels like ‘weird’ and is detrimental to the ability to fool my brain into believing that it’s reality what it sees (less feeling of ‘presence’). That’s why I like my index so much, it really makes me feel like I’m there.
Please don’t forget the 4K!
I literally could not tell the difference from any of your pictures. On this one I see the distortion, but it is so incredibly subtle that I would never notice it on my own or during play.
Tha MAS and comfort kit should fix that, as the experiences on VR days
You should experiment with vertical offset.
But Pimax only have themselves to blame for any discomfort or misunderstandings that have arisen from this, with these critical items still unreleased so long after the original headsets became available
Hehe yeah we’re all different. It’s the curve in the yellow line above (drawn over the wall edge, while the red is a straight line). Most people don’t see it I think. But to me it feels immediately like ‘off’ and one of the main reasons I didnt like my 5k+ too much.
agree it should have been first priority
You generally won’t get distortion on small FoV as your only using the round part of the lens. Where as you get distortion in bigger FoV due to transition from round to flat.
Jeez. For the third time now (I guess?), I have to repeat myself: These photos were taken with a smartphone. I can get much closer to the lens on an Index with a smartphone, compared to a Pimax, at least if I dont take off the foam, strap and plastics between the foam and the headset of the Pimax.
THIS is why you can see more blur (and distortion) at the sides on the Pimax 8KX image.
If I just wanst busy enough, and took my DSLR or even action camera and aligned it properly to the Pimax and Index lenses, you would have clearly seen that things even outside of the Index FOV are fully clear and not distorted on all Pimax headsets (yeah except for 4K). Im sure you have seen these videos before:
Oh and yeah its compared with an Odyssey. Which has 5 degrees less FOV than Index.
If anyone has tried to take images of their headset with a smartphone they’d realize that you can move the phone just a few centimeters in either direction and the image shown will vary wildly and bend and distort. It’s extremely difficult to get a good image from a phone I’ve tried. Trying to measure distortion from phone pics is probably not the best idea…
Do I really need to repeat that the whole lens on the index is distortion free? No distortion in the middle, no distortion at the edges.
Well maybe it’s not, but the photo shows exactly what I see on my 5k+ with my own eyes. And it’s the first time caught om camera. And most people seem to think the effect is so little that they don’t even see it. I think that explains why most are just not bothered with the distortion.
@Djonko I dont know if its the fact that you dont WANT to understand, or if its because you feel that you have to nitpick on something when it comes to 8KX.
We had hundreds and hundreds of people testing the 8KX (and 8K+) in Europe, and most of them told us it has the biggest sweet spot they have seen, except for XTAL’s.
Im not saying your Index is a bad headset. Definitelty not. But I just wish I could put you an Index vs 8KX side by side for you, so YOU could see the difference. I look forward to do this, hopefully during the US roadshow.
I bought the 8k-X months ago so I can’t wait to compare it!
Distortion no, gradually blurry from 70-80 degrees and outwards? yes
