Pimax 8k X with DisplayPort 1.5 / HDMI 2.1

Since the Pimax 8k X HMD will be release late 2020, why not bringing it with HDMI 2.1 or even Diplayport 1.5 after the release of rtx 3080 ti which will most likely have those connectors

Display port 1.5 is actually known as 2.0. Displayport is better than HDMI as it can support more than one screen at a time, whereas HDMI does not have support for dual monitors, although this might have changed in HDMI 2.1. 4k oled screens of the right dimensions aren’t even available yet.

I think its not good to put off release for such things, display port 2.0 will be available by the end of 2020 so we will see GPUs in 2020 or in 2021 with DP 2.0, there’s nothing preventing Pimax from releasing 2.0 refreshes with full fov 120hz of the 8KX, 5K+, and 8KXR oled in 2021 or late 2020 when the gpus are there. Supposedly the 8KX display can support 90hz natively but the issue is that the RTX 2000 series of GPUs cannot for some reason render more than 75hz per screen, hopefully this issue is fixed with the RTX 3000 series.

Specs aren’t out, you don’t know if it’s even going to support it. Also EVERYBODY would need to upgrade, I’m sure that will cause a sh*t storm here on the forums

You know that the rtx 3080 ti gonna be minimal spec for the pimax 8k X if you want to play some decent games like asgarths wrath

sure but there will be a lot users with 1080TI, 2080TI etc. I’m 100% sure they’d not be happy.

Its an enthusiast product , so if new gpus do come out we are buying them anyway ( even having an rtx 2080 ti we would upgrade immediately to 3080 ti ) .

Make it future proof whatever device you’re creating.

Is the Bandwith high enough of a Displaport 2.0 to push the Pimax 8k X to native resolution @ 90 hz or even 120hz ?

DP 2.0 will support full (uncompressed) 24bit RGB for 2x 4K (3840x2160) displays @144Hz -or- 2x 8K (7680x4320) displays @120Hz with 30bit HDR (with DSC), so it is ideal for next-gen VR.

Since the cable, to my understanding, can be detached from the 8kx, I wonder if they could simply come out with a replacement cable for the 8kx when new video cards with dp 2.0 come out?

Would something like that be feasible, or are there other onboard components that would also have to be changed?

The chip “only” seems to support DP 1.4, they would have to change more than a cable to support DP 2

On first sight such a chip doesn’t even seem to be anounced yet - too early.

Yes. DP 2.0 has around triple the bandwidth of poor old 1.4 our GPU’s are currently stuck with.

DP 1.4 VR headset (8K-X, 4K native per eye).
7660 x 2160 total resolution @ 75hz.

Yet…

DP 2.0 Specification 8K-X could do
15,360 by 8,460 total pixels @ 60 Hz, e.g. run a single 16K panel.

(NB: 16K is 4x more than 8K, and 8K is 4x more than 4K, and 4K is 4x more than 1080p Full HD). So to run a 16K monitor at 60Hz on DP 2.0 is a huge leap from current 4K/60Hz monitors.

Conclusion: A theoretical 8K-X V2.0 with DP 2.0 and compatible 2021 year GPU, would easily have enough bandwidth for 4K per eye/120 Hz.

the headset only uses 2x4k though so even one 8k60hz should be able to run it at 120hz. an 16k60hz should be enough bandwidth for 2*4k at 480hz (16*60/2). that’s probably a bit silly but i bet we’ll see an 8kx v2 or v3 running whatever panels is available at that time (probably only 4k still because what else will drive smartphone displays above 4k?) as fast as they can go with no bandwith wories. 2021? that’s probably a bit optimistic, but we can hope.
