Pimax 8k without Pimax/Vive controllers?

Is it possible to use the Pimax 8k without the Pimax/Vive controllers? I don’t care about roomscale or games that need these controllers. I just use my Rift right now for driving sims (will be the same with they Pimax), so I don’t have these controllers and use for the navigation of the Rift a MS gamepad. Is this possible too for the Pimax 8k? I think it should be, because it’s connected via SteamVR, right? I just want to be sure.

Yes, you are correct. The controllers are not requirement…

For driving sims you would be okay though looking over shoulder would give you the headrest & you won’t be able to lean forward.

1 base station would enhance your experience allowing leaning & shoulder checks.

The only thing to perhaps worry about without a tracking system is screen drift.

I’m trying to achieve the same thing myself

The headset will track with the basic inbuilt gyros but you can dramatically improve the experience buy purchasing one single tracking base station for positional tracking

If you want an extra base station just add $75 + $10 delivery to your pledge amount

Your safe buying the headset only because you can always buy the extra base station later from Pimax OR HTC if your not happy with the gyro tracking

Good luck!

Thank you for the answers! Yes, I will buy one basestation too, I don’t want to miss the full range of movement for my head. I just don’t want to have the controllers. I will look up if it’s cheaper to add the extra amount of money when I pledge the headset or buying one Vive base station via amazon/eBay.

Cool. Gyro tracking kinda feels like the world is hanging of your head. I’m only going for the Pimax base station because the Vive stations cost $275 here in New Zealand !! The Pimax stations are also the new 2.0 version. Good luck!

Hey. Just pledged for the 8k head unit and as per mighty dodger will mostly be playing racing sims although I do like other games also (I currently have a Rift) so with this in mind I will want to buy a base station and controllers; what do I need to buy exactly and from whom? I would like to know so that I can keep and eye on any offers between now and Jan.

Thanks!

All you need is one base station

If you want one from Pimax you only need to add $75 + $10 delivery to your pledge

You can get one from HTC but its a complete rip off

The Pimax base stations are the new Valve 2.0 technology so best to go with that

Thanks Davobkk I’ll add the base station now.

How about controllers?

Pimax controllers are $100 each but I wouldn’t recommend them. Valve knuckles controllers will be available next year! It all works with this system

I just googled the knuckles! They look cool. Shame that I cant use my rift ones they are so intuitive.

Re the base station; so I just revise my pledge from $529 to $614? (+ $85)

Yes. I know it’s confusing but they will send you a survey at the end of the kickstarter to tell them the details of your order

No problem. Enjoy trippin out on 8K VR  !

The Pimax controllers are actually a big unknown as they have so far published only some sketches on KS site. They may turn out to be the best controllers on the market or complete disappointment (as the previous prototype were). The only question is if 200 bucks is worthy the risk as is seems we will not see the real ones before the end of KS.

Hey @risa2000 That’s why I said wait for Valves Knuckles. Keep the risk factor as low as possible

Honestly i think we will be in for a treat once the controller design is finalized. Its why i think they are asking for feedback on the design & i beleive the new sketches are based on the knuckles.

Man, I hope you are right! It worries me considering how Valve has been working on their controllers for so long and still not released to the public while Pimax hasn’t even finished a prototype and they’re supposed to be completed by February??? Of all the things that worries me about this KS Pimax has created… the controllers are the most worrisome for me. I have a sinking feeling the deadline will be missed because of the new controllers. But I hope I’m wrong…

I hear you there. The sketches are nice but a video of a 3d model created in a 3d program would give folks a better idea. As for timeline? They did have that one prototype so shouldn’t be as much work reshaping. But time will tell.
