Pimax 8K Series - 8K/8K BE/8KX/8K+?

Anyone notice the change? “Pimax 8K SERIES”. I just looked at Google cache and it definitely was just “Pimax 8K” on Jan 18th 2019. Now obviously I am reading way into things here but the word “series” would indicate a number of 8Ks. We already have the 8K and 8K BE (and the 8KX whenever that arrives) . I believe that would fit, but as speculated an 8K+ might be on the cards.

Interesting the 5K and 5K+ doesn’t have its own Pimax 5K Series section, but then I guess that would really segregate the forum too much and a lot of details, tweaks etc are suitable for both headsets. Still, it could have been written as Pimax 5K & 8K Series but is not. Go figure.

I am of a firm belief that 5K(+) is done now for Pimax. No more tweaking and the 8K is the company leading product to be further improved. It stands to reason as this was the primary product that got most of us into backing it. What also gives me some indication that an 8K+ could materialise once all the Kickstarter and pre-orders are fulfilled is how quickly the 5K+ entered the scene. It was like BAM! here it is, it’s better (for some and cheaper), you can switch if you like. They could have waited until after the KS backers had their 8Ks.

So I am calling it now, current 8K will be tweaked and improved further. However, an 8K+ IS in development right now. It could release in 6 - 12 months. I remember the poll that was made here where a number of backers said they would gladly pay more money to Pimax to get an improved 8K version further down the line that;s separate to what they already invested. Encouraging for Pimax for sure. The 8KX is a bit of a tough one in my view given the hardware requirements to run it - a much more specialised HMD for fewer users.

Well put together.

Whole industries live off product cycles with minor improvements and there are companies which do this very well cough cough Apple. As long as the competition is playing ball, most companies win.

Will an 8k+ be so much better to warrant an upgrade for current owners? There’s no competition around for now, so no need to hurry. The next generation would bet the 8k-X, but due to high hardware requirements few people will be happy with it right now, maybe foveated rendering will help.
