Pimax 5k+ : Some colours appear in relief when it should not

Hello,

I notice that some colours (especially red) appears in 3d relief when it shouldn’t.

I can easily see this on the Steam menu (on steam VR home) when i am on my games list and some games miniatures with red titles appearing in relief instead of being flat.

I can also notice this when I am playing some games. (for exemple on “Groundhog Day Like Father Like Son” with pictures that are on the wall in the house at the beginning of the game)

Is it a way to avoid it happening ?

Are we talking bas relief, with the effect of an illuminated edge, and possibly one in shadow opposite, or only a sense of depth?

Lower frequency colours - noteably vivid reds - appearing to be set apart from the surface they are part of, floating a little bit in front of it, is a classic problem with many displays - noteably DLP projectors (EDIT: …and that’s just 2D, on canvas), and something I have experienced with every HMD I have owned. -Haven’t got a solution to offer, I’m afraid - hopefully somebody else does…(?) :7

EDIT2: I guess making sure you’re in the sweet spot of the lens should help a little bit, since that would minimise chromatic abberations (EDIT3: …which are also compensated for in software, but that, too, assumes you’re in the sweet spot).

Never heard of it, Have you experienced this in other (more mainstream) titles? Have you tried it with PP on?

Replace your eyeballs!

:nerd_face: Seriously, it’s because the human eye focuses different colors to slightly different points on/near the retina. This was actually used in an early 3D vector graphics video game to provide a sense of depth, by drawing some elements in red and others in blue. It actually worked, even though it’s just an optical illusion. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of the game, but iirc, it was somewhat similar to Battle Zone.

@jojon
That is exactly what you say: “appearing to be set apart from the surface they are part of, floating a little bit in front of it”
In fact, It reminds me the effect that could occur on some colours when I enable 2d->3d converter processing effect on my flat TV screen with 3d glasses

@dogbite
As @jojon said , it appears on vivid colors and especially red.
It is something that I notice on some other games, on vivid or some colours. I have no exemple right now of another game in particular but I will update this topic when I will notice this issue in a game I will play soon.

@jojon I don’t remember having notice this issue on my old previous htc vive headset.

I am pretty sure I remember noticing it on mine, although not nearly as strongly… Could be that the “thicker weave” SDE helped anchoring things, or something… :7

Ooh! Neat bit of trivia and biology. So basically down to the chromatic aberration of the human lens, then? I wonder what… wikipedia to the rescue - Ah: A refractive index gradient of 1.386 to 1.406 depending on the density of the specific part of the lens - not uniform, apparently - there is more to the the human eye than meets the…err… eye. :7

EDIT: I believe there is a test card specifically for this effect in that… Umm: “Oscar’s VR test chamber” application, or whatever it is called, by the way…

You can easily notice it when browsing your steam game library (on steam vr home) on some games miniatures with red titles (or yellow).

For exemple, on Doom VFR miniature : “VFR” is legerly floating in front of the rest of the miniature of the game. It makes a 3D effect that I suppose it is not a wanted effect.

Don’t have Doom VFR either.
I have been running my Index controllers through many games the last 2 days and the only time I noticed what might be this phenom is in Skyrim grasses, but those are mods and can be a little flakey, as texture fit goes.
