Pimax 5k+ & problem with index controllers

Hi all,

I’ve got a pimax 5k+ for half a year now and I’m very happy with it.
Using it mostly for flight simming (DCS, X-plane, AFS2).

Now I purchased valve index controllers and struggled to bind them wireless.

As soon as I connect them via USB, they are visible and working in Steam VR and Pi-tool, but I don’t know to link them wireless (bluetooth).
I don’t have the valve link box, cause I read the index controllers connect via bluetooth direct to the HMD.

Did you guys have any tips or setup-instructions for me?
Thanks for your help…

I think You need the beta version of PiTool for proper Index Controller support.

I got mine a few days back. The Dr is right, they didn’t show up properly until I installed .180 beta.

I’d have to go fire everything up to double check, but IIRC you choose the pairing option from the SteamVR menu (small icon with the horizontal bars). Devices -> Pair Controllers. You are then asked to press menu+A or B (can’t remember) on each controller in turn. Should be all good after that :+1:

Edit: oops I was wrong, I eventually did it in PiTool

I confirm you need the .180 version. Other versions have a problem with Valve Knuckles support.
I paired controllers and lighhouses using PiTool. On the Status page, I chose the Device Pair function and followed the instructions.
There were no problems pairing devices.

Many thx for your replies.
I have allready PiTool beta version 180 installed.
The controllers are only visible if I plug them in via USB (the controllers have then a steady green light).
If unplugged, the steady light turns blue and either PiTool nor SteamVR detect the controllers for pairing.
Could it be, that bluetooth of the pimax headset is not active?

Did You try the instructions listed on Valve’s FAQ?

LED is blue

Controller is powered, but not paired to your headset. Pair your controller again:

  • Navigate to the SteamVR status window.
  • Open the menu and select Devices > Pair Controller .
  • Hold down both the System and B buttons for a few seconds.

If this does not pair the controller, try turning the device on and off to power-cycle it.

and:

Still having problems? Reset your controller.

If none of this information solved the problem, you can try performing a “hard reset” on your controller. To do this:

  • Plug the controller in via USB and leave it to charge for 10 minutes.
  • Unplug it and hold down the System Button for 15 secondn, then release.
  • Power the controller on again.

The controller should recover. If you continue having problems, you can click “Contact Steam Support” below to get help.

I had the same thing until I completed this step for each controller. Did the lights behave as described?

If in doubt, restart everything and check again

I followed the instructions on the FAQ page, but with no success.
When I click in PiTool “device pair” and select the Index Controller I got immediately this window:

If I press and hold “B” with the system button, the blue LED starts flashing after a few seconds.
:frowning:

Hmmmm OK. When I select Index Controller I get the screen I posted, and then system + B makes the blue light blink very briefly before they pair. I haven’t seen that error screen at any point.

It sounds like something may be up with the headset BT, but I don’t know how to test that. Not aware of anything to manually reset the BT interface, just the restart of the whole headset or service via PiTool.

If no one else can suggest a fix on here, it might be time to ask Pimax support. Sorry :frowning:

I think you are right, it must be somethink with the BT interface of the headset. Still “googleing” about that and hope to find something…
Thx a lot for your effort…

Probably doesn’t help, but there are at least four LED colours. It sounds like the headset throws an error before you get a chance to put them in pairing mode.

  1. Orange - off and charging
  2. White - off and fully charged
  3. Green - on but not connected
  4. Blue flash - on and trying to pair BT
  5. Blue solid - on and paired

Possibly red flashing or solid for low battery, haven’t seen it myself

No problem, just sorry I couldn’t help you solve it. Good luck I’m sure you’ll have them working soon :+1:

Just a little upgrade:
Issued a ticket @ pimax support with my problem but got no reply.
Today I switched to PiTool 1.0.1.197 and during the setup a firmware upgrade was automatically initiated.
And after that… tada!!!
The index controllers are recocnized and working… :slightly_smiling_face:
Thx all for your help…
