Pimax 5K Plus Review: A Fresh Look at Ultrawide VR (Tom's Hardware Redux)

This article is interesting to me as I had been using vive pro with gear vr lens mod for many months mostly in simulator games inc elite dangerous. I sold my vive pro on ebay and picked up a 5k+ for same money so a straight swap (except £45 in fees). My feeling now is I really miss the comfort of pro headstrap and the vibrant colours and deep blacks of oled. However now that I’ve spent some (considerable) time fine tuning graphic settings in all my games the wide fov does make it worth the switch. Perhaps to truly compare apples with apples the vive pro should be compared to 5k xr (oled) at $999. This would be well worth an extra $200 over the pro for extra fov.

Interesting, that version does not have motion smoothing yet. I wonder how much performance increase was really up to Pitool and how much was just better HW or placebo.

The new version .109 (or now .111 Beta) includes motion smoothing (in Brainwarp tab) and also allows to set 72 Hz or 64 Hz, these are the options which really help with performance now.

Not sure why one would want headphones (at an extra cost) when you can get ones that meet your quality expectations separately, like the ones you already have. The “the PC hardware is not good enough” argument is not a problem intrinsic to the pimax and should not affect its score. The prob is generally that GPUs are too bad, but this is bound to change during the lifespan of a pimax. And you can always dull down settings in the meantime.

But, yes, the default headstrap is poor, even if e.g. the velcro material is really good.

I’m with you, @Radsoc. I’d rather go through the extra step or two of connecting (and then disconnecting) my own headphones, but I can definitely see the appeal of having everything fused together.

haha yeah seriously. On what earth is a vive pro not expensive.

I would say its worth it especially if you play cockpit games.

Kind of a strong presumption to make

yeah next he’ll be crediting valve with space warp when using an oculus on steam

Cracking on the corners was an issue with the earlier headsets (first thousand or so) and they have made the housing sturdier since then. I haven’t heard any cracking complaints from anyone with the newer headsets.

Well, you can hear it from me. Backer #36XX. Two cracked corners. And ask @spamenigma if only the early headsets have cracks…

I never said it wasn’t expensive.

I actually have a legitimate criticism of your review to add. The retail Pimax 5K+ removed the proximity sensor, but it’s still listed under the specs of your review.

That’s interesting. I must have gotten them mixed up at some point because i have the leap motion sensor on the one with the proximity sensor.

I will have that corrected.
