Pimax “5K” Plus Breeds Confusion as Previewers Recommend it Over “8K” Headset - RoadToVR

“Before we decided to bring the [‘5K’ Plus] to the testers and backers in Berlin, we had an intensive argument internally, quite a few team members thought it might confuse people, thus against the idea of releasing the new model right away,” the company wrote in its most recent Kickstarter update published last week. “However, the whole purpose of the team is to deliver the best possible VR immersion experience to backers ASAP, and whatever fits in that purpose is the right thing to do. The final decision is not to hide, but to make the new model available for each one of you, our backers.” <

Personally, I’m very grateful that they chose to offer the 5K+ instead of giving me the 5K I expected. Quite happy about that (though I get why it’s also confusing and frustrating for others).

While I agree, I don’t believe the situation would be much different now if it was still 5k vs. 8k.

I will say it once again - people are blaming this on the 5K+ when it has nothing to do with the 5K+. This is ALL about the 8K and how good it doesn’t look. We would all be thinking about switching to the regular 5K is there was no 5K+.

FFS, can’t I have one f#$ing part of my life free from politics?

These days that is becoming increasingly difficult. Games, movies everything is politicized.

Until we all have our perfect HMD’s in our grubby hands this forum’s subject matter and crazy meanderings to kill time and anxiety will continue, so no.

This is getting annoying…

I don’t believe all testers have said the 8k is Bad, have they?

might want to recheck on that…
and I don’t believe the 8k has been downgraded since alle the evolution steps, it’s just the expectation are higher now. So take what you want and let’s be done with it, we are not making the PPI higher by trolling on the issue or debating the order of natural numbers and the implications of this into PPI.

Funny how as soon as RoadToVR sniffs shit on the wind they publish a story. Headsets shipping, 5K+ model available, etc? Crickets.

It seems like they got a pretty sweet deal on square pixel 5k screens and stayed with the diamond pattern 8k. I personally would’ve thrown extra money for OLEDs, but upgraded 5ks is pretty good.

BTW MRTV says that for games 5k+ is best, for movies 8k.

i cant complain, i railed at them all for not covering headset and their reaction was that there were no press releases.

There was no press release for these events but they are paying attention a least. XD

Don’t take it personally @benz145

We‘re all a bit on edge at the moment with the beginning of shipment and between conflicting reports from testers (Sweden and Germany vs Spain) and the first signs of apparent smear campaigns against Pimax, everyone is a bit biased with regards to how some outlets choose to report on Pimax.

In the end this is a kickstarter. In kickstarter companys set goals (most of the time), at the beginning it is not 100% sure what comes out of this.

For me this is simple:
They tried to make the 5k and as a premium product the 8k. Afterwards they got a new supply of displays and tried it out in the 5k and it performed even better than expected. Now there’s only a small gap between this 5k+ and the 8k. Most say it’s perhaps even better. After that they decided to let the backers also benefit from this new situation, which is just awesome. Most other companies would have made a different decision here!

Why this triggers so much negative reactions is a mystery to me…

Exactly, the attributes of the 5k+ don’t change the attributes of the 8k, only peoples perceptions are altered… People think this the 8k was somehow downgraded because of the success of the 5k. Just because one athlete can beat another in a game doesn’t make the other less better than they actually are. Everyone is getting obsessive about this, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Honestly, everyone should be thrilled the 5k+ exists, it gives us more options and a better understanding of what the 8k is, but it certainly didn’t magically alter what the 8k is!

The disappointment is because the 8K doesn’t live up to the Kickstarter goals: It’s doesn’t have a 90 Hz refresh, it’s blurry, it doesn’t have full RGB pixels, SDE is still (slightly) visible, etc.

That was all part of the concerns right from the beginning and as such part of the risk. It was explained over and over again on KS that it ain’t online shopping.

The reason a very few but vocal backers whine is because they have to accept a 5k can be just as good but they wanted something superior but nobody dropped his pledge before the deadline since they didn’t understand the tech and details anyways.
The surprise was really that for the 5k there came a better display alternative matching the not perfect lenses.
The ship sailed for a happy majority. The rest can cash in on eBay and wait for StarVR…

Two great products by Pimax, each with it’s own pros and cons.

I know whichever product we choose will be superior to the Vive Pro.

The only let-down is the lack of communication from @PimaxVR themselves to help us choose which!
