I also have to totally disagree. 3dof is like strapping a monitor to my eyeballs. It makes me feel horrible and is the exact opposite of immersion. My brain is very acutely aware that this is so ridiculously fake every second of the experience and I cannot escape it.
It’s a disservice to use VR and 3dof in the same sentence.
To me I would rather a monitor than 3dof. But 6dof and I can throw my monitor out, if only I could read documents comfortably.
So if you got a Pimax you wouldn’t even plug it until you get lighthouses? I have a GearVR and had fun with it, obviously using my Vive is better, but a Pimax with 3 DoF is better than nothing…
I’ll plug it in to see it. But if LH’s are a long way off, it really isn’t worth it to me. 3dof feels horrible and I can never achieve any sense of immersion.
It would be so much more useful to someone with a vive.
My 8k arrived 2 days ago, but I can’t get the internal tracking to work properly.
The view through the screen will track a few degrees at most before locking, then allow a bit more movement before locking again. This happens continually and is random, which is very uncomfortable with motion sickness occurring very quickly.
This happens in all 3dof.
It happens in the Pimax home screen (the alien planet), in Elite:Dangerous, and a couple of other VR games I’ve tried so far.
I don’t have any lighthouses, but they are part of my kickstarter pledge, and have a GTX 1080Ti, with an i7 5960X processor and 32Gb ram.
I also have been using a Pimax 4K HMD with 3dof for a couple of years without any problems.
Anyone any ideas about the tracking ? Am I missing something obvious ? I’m hoping the unit isn’t broken.
Congrats on receiving your 8k. Sorry to hear tracking not. Maybe try facing north & try a compass to see if you have anything interfering with the compass.
I tried a compass, but there was no interference with the needle. Also, as I said earlier my Pimax 4k uses internal 3dof tracking and apart from a bit of drifting worked without problems.
I still had Piplay installed, so I uninstalled it and re-installed Pitool.
Unfortunately the problem is still there. Tracking only works randomly and a few degrees at a time before the picture locks, then repeat.
It really makes the HMD unusable at the moment.
This might sound stupid but you have probably tried rebooting your PC already ?
Also, disconnect your other usb devices and try your headset on other usb ports.
Thanks for your reply. I had rebooted the computer several times, and had already moved the usb from a hub to a PCI usb 3.0 extension (which had a power supply connected).
After reading your post and where I’m concerned there is no such thing as sounding stupid, I thought I may as well try it again. So I moved the usb to one of the original ports (had to unplug something else as they were all used) and rebooted.
Success ! The HMD is now tracking properly. TrevorVR, you are my hero !.
Unfortunately it is now time for bed, so I will have to wait till tomorrow to try the 8K properly.
Lol. USB can be a bitch. Check your motherboard USB controller drivers are up to date. There are usually two sets of drivers, usb provided by the chipset and usb provided by an external controller. Thats mostly the reason why swapping the usb port helps sometimes.
