Pimax 4K vs WMR

I am seriously considering getting a WMR headset, and am wondering how it compares to the 4K.

For what it is supposed to do, I am pretty satisfied. Playing xbox controller games on the 4K is great fun. But I want to have the full room scale experience and though I could wait for the Pimax 4K tracking system to come out, would it be worth it?

Thoughts below please. I like the 4K but am no uncritical fanboy. WMR looks tempting for its simplicity, and alternative solutions so far have been a bit of a nightmare.

I know @LukeB had an opportunity to try the Odyssy & of the wmr, the cameras do both tracking & augmented reality. Where as the other wmr only do tracking.

@denali owns an odyssy but did say he prefered the BE model due to godrays.

Has any info resource that the cameras of samsung odyssey can do augmented reality?

Do a google search. @LukeB initially reported on it and the rest of us hadn’t seen thst update & had grilled that point. I did a follow up search since luke said the fellow at the store demoed that feature. (Will see if i can find a link later; but believe did post one to validate Luke’s report)

Well, it won’t be the Pimax 4K nor the BE image quality but you’ll gain decent tracking/controllers.

Find some place to buy/order where returns are not a hassle if it’s too much of a trade-off.

Picturewise it should be better than the BE. Remember the BE was 25601440(12801440/eye 1 display) & samsung oled panel.

The Odyssy on the otherhand is 28801600(14401600/eye 2 displays). But optic wise hard to say. An interesting idea would be to see if you could get aspherical lens to compare.

Refresh 60 to 90.

I am thinking of going for the dell or lenovo, based on their reviews. Both are pretty cheap now. Many reviews mention a small sweetspot though, wonder how that is.

The Samsung now is going for $399 us atm

Why not go for the Oddysey? I saw it was only $399 the other day on the microsoft store. Thinking about it myself…

I definitely would get the Odyssey if I could find it cheap. Here though, there is pretty much a 100 usd markup on everything, shipping, import tax etc. Haven’t seen one that is cheap enough and it isn’t on my local Microsoft store.
The others are quite a lot cheaper. I expect to pay about 300 usd in total for a dell or lenovo.

Aaaand it seems all this discussion, for me, is academic. I just ran the WMR compatibility software and my cpu is incompatible. Well, that’s s**t. Roll on Pimax 4K tracking system.

Let me guess, AVX instruction requirements stopped your fun?

Exactly. That pretty much limits me to the Vive or Rift. Does Pimax 8K also require AVX?

Not sure.

@deletedpimaxrep1 might have an answer.

Hi jonnypanic, I ordered a Lenovo Explorer WMR, it should arrive in a couple of days; since I’ve tried the 4k and had sent it back after experiencing some hard to solve problems with the lens and ipd , I could do a review and in-depth comparison of the two headsets and write my impressions here .

Having had a number of headsets (Deepon E2, Oculus DK2, PS VR, Pimax 4k) I can say that the quality of the display resolution in the 4k was the highest ever seen, but the lens and bad assembly of some units really made it almost unusable to far sighted or unlucky people who got a bad assembled lens unit…this is very unfortunate I think, as Pimax could have been able to sell many more 4k units if these problems were solved or professionally taken care of by their tech support.

Sebastian Ang of Mixed Reality TV on youtube said that the Lenovo Explorer is probably the best WMR headset for the price point, having its strenght in:

  • Comfort and lowest weight of all the WMR headsets.
  • Reasonable quality LCD screen and good quality lens.
  • Lowest price (FYI currently on sale at just $199 on Microsoft store US)
  • Reasonably good controllers tracking.

Only known problem with most WMR headsets seems to be the IPD range, it is known not to be suitable if you have it very far away from the standard value of 64, for the mayority of people it’s okay but if you have IPD values of over 67 or lower than 62 then most WMR headsets are not recommanded as there is no manual IPD adjustment, except in the Samsung Odyssey.

I will tell you more as soon as I have thoroughly tested the Lenovo Explorer myself.

About Godrays here is the interesting modification for Vive pro to eliminate Godrays but this brings some other disadvantages.
After the modding lens is similar to Pimax4K.

Now that we know WMR users can use OpenVR to use VIVE controllers and trackers with WMR HMD’s… I can’t help but wonder if we could get this to work also with the Pimax 4K? If it wasn’t for the fact that I purchased the Full 8K package which comes with VIVE compatible controllers and trackers… I would purchase VIVE controllers now and try. Maybe someone else can test this for us and let us know.

Valve/vive controllers can be used without a headset. However with wmr headsets i believe you’d need to disable their inside out tracking.

Now i don’t have one to test but there is a user experimenting with possibility of using vive tracking puck for head tracking.

Actually… comments from Reddit say that not only don’t you need to disable the MWR controllers… they can work along side the VIVE controllers as well. But why do that… I don’t know. But people reported that when you’re configuring VIVE controllers for the first time in OpenVR… it’s best to use the MWR until you got the correct configuration for the VIVE controllers.

I don’t see why the tracking puck wouldn’t work myself.

Another idea to this puzzle is using the Kinect as well with OpenVR for full body tracking. Though a that’s more complicated setup and far from perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RsbSXdYX1Q&t=1183s
