Pimax 4k, 3D projects and possible workaround to use steamvr in optimus laptops

Hello guys!
I’m really interested to buy a Pimax 4K for various reasons. the first of all, I want to develop virtual reality scenes of my architectural 3D projects trough UE4 or some other similar engine. The second one, if possible, to use it sometimes with steamvr and in particullarly with Assetto Corsa.

Now the question is: could my laptop work with pimax 4k (maybe in extended mode)?

I own an Acer Aspire Nitro vn7-792g with an Intel corei7 6700HQ + Nvidia GTX960m and I read all the issues with pimax and laptops with nvidia optimus.

In the past I already use my pc for these purpose using my LG G3 with Trinus VR app with a very good results, but now I wanted something more practical to use for my works.

Can anyone take my doubts off?

EDIT
I found this video on YouTube and maybe it’s a trick useful to run pimax on optimus laptops with lower specs than requirements? It seems that In this way it’s also possible to choose a lower resolution to have a better performances with low ends gpus. Maybe it’s possible to create a workaround on PIPlay using this trick with a new compatible mode for steamvr?

There are also a reddit post about it, but inherent to Rift DK1 and DK2.

I’m pretty curious to know if there are some way to make this possible, especially for the cheap price of pimax in comparison to Vive and CV1

That one never work for me. You might need to looking for nvidia_laptop that come with DP port and using hdmi adapter with it. Otherwise onboard Nvdia_will never been reconized by Pimax.

My laptop owns a Thunderbolt 3 port, but I didn’t find any hdmi adapter specifically to thunderbolt 3 type-c but only simple usb 3.1 type-c and otherwise I’m not sure that it bypass intel gpu issues.

@pinate you’ve tried the trick on youtube video with osvr driver?

I think what it need is to direct connect with Nvidia but hdmi usually connect to the intel graphic that’s why DP port is a good sign because usually is direct from Nvidia if I’m not wrong. I never try OSVR because Pimax is Openvr compatible and the trick is too complicate for me. I’m also use Pimax for Arch.viz stuff, so I get a (cheaper) high performance small formfactor desktop instead of elite Nvidia laptop.

On most laptops actually, unless there is a mux even the display port will connect to the intel card because the intel gpu is always the frame buffer and there is no hardware switch (a mux) to change this. Luckily though pimax have enabled direct mode emulation through extend mode. Something both htc and oculus gave up on since they require 90hz minimum for the experiences they sell.

Very thanks for the info @Vort3k!
So, if I understand well, it’s possible to use pimax on my laptop trough this emulation, right?
I’m a little bit confused about that, and now I’m considering to buy a psvr to use with trinus psvr software (that it seems to work on optimus laptops) instead of pimax, but since I cant’ bypass 60fps limit with my laptop I’d prefer the second one with a better resolution, a native pc development, and with a great community behind

If you @Evox is developing by yourself, such as unity, you just need to define stereo-split camera as display(manually/unity’s asset) then you can use Pimax with a laptop in video mode(extend mode).

thanks for the tip @pinate, but I read that in extended mode gyroscope do not work. It’s true?

You’re right, that will be missing. I’m not sure about the “enabled direct mode emulation through extend mode” that @Vort3k mentioned. Might need more info. from @Vort3k.

The emulation is something piplay/osvr does automatically based on your configuration when you set it to pimax mode. As I understand it though pimax devs hacked an older version of osvr and oculus runtimes to get this working. Current steam and oculus runtimes do not support this function due to it’s limits.

@Vort3k I’m glad to know it!
Anyway after this information I don’t understand why so many people here have so much problems with pimax and laptops

Since the 2.0 versions pimax seems to work on most desktop and laptop configs. Pimax mode 1440p input works well on my muxless intel/nvidia set up now. Before in some versions the headset wasn’t even detectable.

Oh nice! Can I ask your laptop config?

Nvidia Gtx 980m paired w/ intel 4900mq

I gave up ever since 1.9 version, since Vort3k mentioned so I gave my laptop another try, yes it’s work on Pimax mode now on Piplay new version, so cool. Mine is gtx960m even.

@pinate I’m happy to know it! Now I’m waiting for a possible discount on black Friday!

Hey guys! At least I bought a Pimax from gearbest and it arrived some hours ago. I tried it on my optimus laptop and it works quite well for now, even with steamvr (I tested it with assetto corsa) and frame rate it’s good for me. The only issues for now is to set well the IPD that it’s not so much good from software, but for now I think that it’s a good deal for a laptop user like me. In the next few days I want to test it with driver4vr using my kinect 360 for positional tracking
