Oculus game on pimax: issue with older pitool and firmware versions?

Hello guys . I am running the pimax 8k on headset firmware v 2.1.255.191
and
Pitool version: 1.0.1.103

A few moths ago i was able to play the oculus game “edge of nowhere” on the pimax 8k.

I have tried today and either the headset panels remain black and the booting of the game freezes (if booting the game from pitool) or i get the message in the attached file (if booting the gane from my oculus library)

Is there an issue with my firmware and pitool version for playing oculus games on the 8k?

Have you tried any of the following?

  • Latest PiTool + latest gpu drivers
  • Switching all the various PiTool settings
  • Playing on the Oculus Rift :joy:

Are you using (by chance) 3DoF ?

This is either 3DoF (double check it!!!) or the basestation can´t see the HMD (which is required before starting the game).

Can you support/bare the low resolution ? For me is SO pixelated that i can´t play.

Hi guys! Thank you for the replies!

In the end following the suggestion of checking pimax setting , i disabled “reprojection” and the game started , but as @Douglaster said, the image quality is horrible. I do not recall it was this horrible the 1st time i booted the game on pimax.

Why is that the case?
Is there any solution to this problem ?

pimax did adjustmants for “OC” (as it is commented in change logs - if there is one)

problems like lower res where seen before so you might check older forum entries (search) but i’d expect its usually a newer pitool version that fixes oculus problems (and with your other hardware not compatible with newer pitools you will have a hard to solve problem)

I see! Thank you!
It sucks that the vrfree gloves and pimax have compatibility issues @PimaxUSA

I guess for oculus games i might have to update firmware and pitilool version, and then revert back to older versions when not needed and wanted to use gloves

Hi! Have you found a solution for edge of nowhere and its poor image quality on the pimax ?

Unfortunately no. It seems the resolution is hard locked

Have you also tried the latest pimax firmware update and the latest pitool update?

Yes. Same issue.

One thing that i will try is to up the SS in the Oculus Debug tool.

Could you please tell me how to do that?

I have an intel i9-9900k with 32gb of ram @4100 mhz and a 2080ti video card.

I can try to push the ss up and see how high we can reach with video quality on a pc that in theory should be powerful

You have to install the Oculus SDK.

There, you will find the Debug Tool under tools and select the pixel SS.

But it don’t work on every game, unfortunately.

I have yet to test Chronos with this method.

Thanks! I have turned off :

Smart smoothing
Ffr
Compatible with parallel projections

and i have set up the rendering quality in pitool to maximum

and the video quality increased tremendously

Before it was like cubicle view. Horrendous

For whatever reason, i can’t go past anymore the 1st screen/menu of the game that says that i need a gamepad to play.

I have connected to my pc an xbox controller . Do you know why this happens?

Ps: somehow i solved it.

Now i am trying to use the keyboard instead on the gamepad , in game. Trying to figure out how

Good to know !

I will replay it too. Chronos is also a must play game.

I finished Edge Of Nowhere with only the X360 gamepad.

I have Chronos too.

The reason why i am looking for a way to use the keyboard in game in place of the controller or along with the use of the controller , is because i am using this

To walk in any game throught wasd input.

Chronos and edge of nowhere are 2 of the many games i would love to play walking in game and not pushing buttons to move in game
