Oculus Compatibility

Hi guys

I have an Oculus rift with touch controllers. As I understand it you can use the Steam lighthouses and controllers with the Pimax headset - but can you use the Oculus ones as well (say with Revive)? If not, then what would be the recommendation? Should I get myself some lighthouses or should I wait for the Pimax ones? Do we know yet when the pimax lighthouses & controllers might be coming out? Im kinda worried that I might get my Pimax headset but then have nothing to do with it for ages as I don’t have a Vive

Thanks

There are many experiences that can use a regular game controller.

Oculus controllers as far as i know are bound to Oculus headset but could be wrong. If you didn’t back controller & lighthouse you might want to get a vive set.

You need lighthouses at a minimum, Oculus tracking works in an entirely different way than Vive lighthouses; for Oculus sensors to track the Pimax headset, the headset would need to have IR LEDs all over it, which it doesn’t (Pimax headset has sensors which detect lasers output by the lighthouses). So if you don’t want to wait until October for the Pimax lighthouse, you need to borrow or buy at least one Vive lighthouse (preferably two).

Thanks for the replies guys. So I guess the xbox controller that comes with the oculus would work ok for the games that support it on steam? As for the Pimax headset - will it come with any kind of trackers for this early shipment? For example when I got the Oculus kickstarter it came with one of the cameras (but no touch). If the Pimax lighthouses are only gonna be ready in October, then should i presume there will be no “native” lighthouses with the first shipment, and therefore no way of actually using it until October (Unless i go out and buy steam ones)?

You will still be able to do vr games that don’t require motion controllers.

Ie
Distance
Elite Dangerous
Ethan Carter VR dlc
Etc

Hi @Heliosurge - but wouldn’t the pimax headset still require at least one lighthouse/camera to track the rotational and/or positional information for the headset? I.e. are we expecting at least one camera to come with the pimax headset so that it can be used as a standalone headset without any controllers? (I realize I can use the xbox controller instead of motion controllers at this stage  )

Even your oculus & vive have accelerometers & gyros. Which is still used & needed for potenially other tracking ideas ie the hand tracking modul i believe is not lighthouse compatiable.

Oh right I didnt realize that. I thought that all rotational and position data was from the cameras. So what you’re saying is that pimax would likely have gyros within the headset to allow for at least rotational tracking.

Yes. If you only have the headset (and no lighthouses) you will be limited to seated games, like Elite Dangerous, flight and driving games.

Truth Oculus started out with just Gyros & accelerometers but found it needed something extra due to drift & such. So the extra tracking provides positional & data that corrects rotational drift.

Cool thanks everyone!

Do we know this?

Neither the Vive or Oculus can be used without trackers. I’m not sure pimax will.

I would assume the 8k requires at least one basestation.

We know this because the hand tracking module cannot be used with Steam tracking; they are not compatible.

& pimax has said steam tracking & pi tracking; its not limited.

Eh, what the hand tracking module is a leap motion, of course it’s compatible.

Even if it wasn’t a leap motion no reason why it wouldn’t be compatible.

Ks page

That was not at all what I responded to.

Okay the leap correction. However it seemed you were confused that the headset couldn’t function without a base station & like the 4k it can.

I am a bit skeptical about this point. While Pimax 4K did not have any other choice so it had to implement some sort of position tracking using MEMS, apart from short notice on KS page, Pimax 8K (or 5K) was never demoed without lighthouses.

I wonder what testers will say about it.

And what is with games like “Edge of nowhere”? It is gamepad compatible, BUT ONLY when Oculus sensors are connected. So in fact, is it true, that I will never be able to play this game on my Pimax, if I don’t buy a Rift?

October? This was the best joke I have read so far! ;-D You cant expect them already in the next year.
