I was just wondering why the PiMax has only an adjustment for short sightedness. I am long sighted and have to wear glasses to see things up close and I cannot adjust the Pimax 4K to suit my eyes - that I have found. I had no problem adjusting the IPD and that helped a bit but wearing glasses inside the HMD is not viable (although it is possible with the right glasses). So everything is just a bit blurry
Are you considering an eye adjustment for the other half of humanity?
Also it would be nice to have a microphone in the headset so that voice control is possible seeing there is no controller for the PiMax 4K.
Moreover, it would be nice to have language translations for the PiMax software. I realise that some are in English but certainly not some of the important software.
I think the glasses are good but they need better software support.
Unfortunately, no contact lenses are available and not sure that I want to go to that length (with all the infection possibilities/sterilisation required) .
Tks for your reply.
Yes the debug tool was one of the contenders - good news. I would love to help but I have no knowledge of any of the seven dialects of Chinese.
As Heliosurge says, you can adapt lenses from cheap reading glasses (I used 2.5X mag galsses lenses) to change focus to suit your vision by placing the lenses over the Pimax lenses (concave side to the lenses) and this does work, but it is a bit of a pain after a while and so I came up with a hardware mod to the unit so that the lenses can have the correct focus.
This has worked brilliantly for me, but does involve a bit of careful work and may not be for the faint hearted.
You can check out this short video I made and see if it’s for you.
Before you embark on this though, you should also search out and watch other videos on YouTube on taking the unit.
apart.
I think it’d be a step too far to ask the community to do translation for them, though they surely do need it. It’s a ton of work and the only way to get reasonable quality is to pay for it. Plus doing free testing for them is one thing, but I think they’d be going a bit far in having us basically work for free. I think Pimax has been a bit short-sighted here, in prioritising saving a few pennies over quality documentation.
It really doesn’t cost that much though considering the benefits. Unfortunately I think they use some kind of agency that has frankly done a terrible job. Agencies have a way of stifling the industry, they pay the translators pittance, take a large cut, and impose ridiculous deadlines that mean the quality suffers. Then they take all the jobs because companies like Pimax think they have to go through an agency to get quality (ironically).
Anyway, rant over. I say all this in the hope that Pimax succeeds of course. I have noticed the forum communication has improved, a good sign.
Keep in mind they did post for jobs in the forum. As for quality translation into multiple languages one only has to look to linux & other open source projects.
One member already started a topic to help improve quality in translations. Even improving upon what is there.
If you want a good look at what linux is. Goto youtube & search “What the tech industry has learned from Linus Torvald” in truth he"s more relevent than Gates & Jobs.
They did, and aren’t looking for translators, which I don’t understand. I don’t know how open source translation works, but would Pimax’s userbase be large enough?
I get that, but the difference is popularity. For open source translation to succeed there needs to be a large enough community, and I think there aren’t enough people here who can translate and will be willing to give up their time to do so.
Ah but for one this isn’t as large as an OS. I myself with speaking with @deletedpimaxrep1 have already volunteered & if you consider the user who started a topic on helping with improving translations it will encourage others to participate. The power of community can be staggering and often it takes one person to affect change with tge right audience.
Hence the expression “If i change just 1 person’s perspective; i can change the world.”
The thing is, correct me if I’m wrong, but there doesn’t seem to be enough native English Mandarin speakers on the Pimax forum, and that is pretty much the bare minimum requirement to translate. The Pimax problem up to now is they clearly don’t use native speakers to translate. And people here, as far as I am aware, could be wrong, don’t know Chinese. How else would you do it, machine translation with editing?
I’d probably help if I had the time. Unfortunately I don’t. I wanna see this work I just don’t understand the details.
Consider minor things as the user that started the discussion mentiined
“Sorry the network is not well”
So as a more professional look suggest something like
“The network is experiencing high traffic. Please try downloading later. Sorry for any inconvience.”
Now you might have a better suggestion. We don’t necessarily need to dig deep & devote a ton of time to do complete translations. Just suggest improvements based on what we see.
Sure, I understand it. I don’t mind helping out in that sense. Problem with that though is that the mistakes will be constant. They will always be there and out in public before people can make suggestions. Sometimes there will be misunderstandings and deviation from the original. Which is fine generally but it doesn’t look very professional.
I had already tried wearing my reading glasses as a Kludge band it worked by it also made removing the HMD somewhat difficult on the glasses. So your suggestion is good. I have not watched the video yet but you really do get into the guts of the beast - I am not sure about that yet - the HMD is very new 3 days old. and I am still trying to get the S/W to work reliably with my GTX 1060 6Gb. At this stage it works one out of three computer starts - the Steam VR works very well but the NVidia S/W (latest - June 2017) has a problem with the PiMax.
I wil let you know when I get some lenses to fool around with.
That’s what I did at first and the lenses worked quite well, but I did still have to wear my glasses and so after some time using the piggybacked lenses I decided it was time to mod my unit.
I figured that if I was going to continue to use it, it would have to be more comfortable and so I was prepared to take the chance with the mod.
I presume that should be fixed. However like yourself no idea when its being released. Though eith the web site should be soon as its listing PiPlay 2.0
