In 2020 we have to conclude that the perfect headset still doesn’t exist. Each headset has their advantages and disadvantages. And it seems that’s going to stay like that for a while to come
Naw mate. We pay extra to get out of trade-offs.
Well, I am in the lucky position to get all these amazing new headsets and damn, they often do look simply better than what was there before! So simply catching it now with 4k videos so you can just check it out for yourself.
Seems sharper than the 8kX to me
You certainly have a way of expressing your thoughts Fabrizio, should I say, unique?
You’re not going to take my advice, but I would suggest tempering your initial reactions until you’ve made some comparisons to other headsets you own, then say how amazing/better/different it looks with some back-up knowledge. I think you would get more consumer respect that way as well. Right now your initial reactions pleases those who provide you the headsets most. As with most Youtubers who get “provided stuff”, they want you to scream WOW, Amazing, Fantastic etc.
Dear Rob,
I will have to send this headset back, HP was so nice to provide all the return slip to make this process as simple as possible. My initial impressions are for Patrons, and these are unfiltered. But yeah, I am excited about this headset. Here is another through the lens video:
Is this another turtle video ?
Did you have the same diligence when you made the 8K X 1080P preview video through the lenses ?
It’s a natural human reaction Sebastian. I would be interested to hear your comparisons to the original reverb if you have one and the 8KX.
Nice video Seb! Thanks for making it
Hi Sebastian.
Now that you have the G2 how does the FOV compare to the Index?
Also how does the tracking compare to the Rift S?
Nice video. Interesting to hear the sweet spot has improved. I really wish I had this headset for comparison to the 8kX, it is perhaps the single most important data point I am missing.
Hi Atmos, it is smaller than Index but bigger than Rift S and others. I will measure in the testing environment tmr.
Tracking has also vastly improved. Again, I have so many more testing to do, it just came today. But there will be a first impressions video out this week for sure.
For us, that would be desirable. But I fear that is not how Youtube works. If you are excited easily, you generate more clicks. Just look at many of the successful Youtubers. And apart from that - if you wish to get early access to the headsets, a glowing first impression will surely help. It probably harms less if you downplay it later on or if manufacturer X notices later that you greeted every second subsequently released headset again as the greatest under the sun. But if you give their headset a lukewarm reception they will remember and push you back or omit to send you their next new release entirely.
These mechanisms will generate some behaviour some of the actors in the game may not even be fully aware of themselves. It doesn’t necessarily mean they are knowingly dishonest, it’s probably more of a gradual thing which they won’t feel is untruthful. But it is clearly a balancing act.
Yeah, that’s why it’s called “Influencers”, and not “Independent Journalists”. To be fair, most Journalists aren’t independent either. Semantics. Unless the headsets are bought and reviewed, the Influencer isn’t independent, no matter what he says. Difficult truth.
It’s still good though if we can get reviews that are based on comparisons, e.g. through the lens comparisons is a good example. Actual objective comparisons based on data that can be followed. So I’m hoping for that in MRTV’s video, even if the headset was sponsored.
For example, what surprised me was the bandwagon-hate on the Cosmos Elite HMD across the YTs first, and then the communities. After the Cosmos OG tracking disaster, nobody cared revisiting it anymore properly. Tested with Lens Mod against the Index HMD, the Cosmos Elite HMD with Mod is clearly the better headset.
Pack in Wireless, and you got something the Index HMD can’t even dream of comparing with. Mind you, talking about the HMD only here - I use Index Controllers and LHs for them all.
The headset is a loaner unit and came with return slips, so that’s that. I personally do not like the term “influencer”, I would call myself an independent content creator. And you know what, I am very proud about this independence.
I could have taken money from headset makers lots of times already but I did not. Instead, I am earning my money by creating Patreon content (woohooo, $500 at the moment…) and by consulting companies. It is the way harder road to go, and I could have way more views and subscribers if I had just sold out and had those companies pay for pushing my content.
And you have no idea what kind of hard work it is to build those relationships that allow me to receive those headsets as early. @Axacuatl makes it sound as if it was about hyping a product and then simply receiving it. Well, this might be true for quite some YouTubers, but also here, I might beg to differ. I traveled to lots of expos, using my own money, to make those connections and get to know those players. Companies know that they will get a fair review on MRTV. Even after I had the more than unhappy backlash here with Pimax for example, I still delivered a 100% fair review.
There recently was a company that required me to sign a contract that would require me to follow talking points about a headset so I could receive it early. I declined. And I am pretty sure I was the only content creator that declined.
And for these kinds of reasons I received the 8K X, the Reverb G1 & G2, the StarVR One, the nreal Light, the HoloLens 2 etc. earlier than others. And if you watch my content, you will see that it is not just happiness and rainbows when I make videos about those devices. I told people about the distortions in the 8K X, the smaller than average FOV in the Reverb G1 and that you could see the edge of the display, the not so fantastic resolution in the StarVR One, and so on.
I would not need to spend so much time on answering you guys here. But sometimes it is just disheartening to see comments like that, when you work so hard on these videos, putting in all of my passion without actually earning any money secretly like many others simply do.
Sincerely, Sebastian
P.S: I can wholeheartedly recommend my Patreon if you want to support independent reporting on these headsets and me working as hard as I do to bring you these kind of comparisons as early as I do @JoCool
You mean the one where he gave it a very nice initial review? I don’t see a problem with what was an excellent preview of a not final unit. He gave it much praise.
This is why reviewers are required to identify if they are reviewing a free sample sent for review.
