I have a weak GPU (1050 Ti fanless - Palit GTX 1050 Ti KalmX - Silent Gaming! - YouTube), which works borderline OK for current VR games (I tried with both Rift and Vive, have a Rift), but obviously won’t work with Pimax’s resolution, Will I be able to forcefully drop resolution to some very low value? I understand this will result in a blurry picture, but I want to just try 200 FOV, I’m ok with quality tradeoff. Will it be possible to use 200FOV with forced low res (like 0.5 or 0.25 of normal)?
Tbh you might be okay with watching videos & really low spec games. But your going to need an upgrade to enjoy. Your gpu is just too old as they say.
“Old” Anyways, the question is - is it possible, or not. Obviously if Pimax driver wont allow setting below 1440p, it’s not going to work…
Like I said maybe for video & extremely low spec vr. But truthfully I’d say no. Since not even a 1060 6g is not in the min spec.
But doesn’t hurt to try. It either works or doesn’t. Plus keep in mind when you say 1440p? You mean per eye?
There’s nothing technically preventing you from rendering your content at like 2x720p then upscale that to 2x1440p that gets send to the 8k. With steamVR you could subsample but the unknown is if Pimax will implement that in their software.
Even if Pimax does not implement that in their software, some games, like Elite Dangerous, allow you to decrease the super-sampling level below 1.0, which yields significant performance increases.
Yup, and I suspect many people will need to run some variation of sub-sampling like that even on the 8k. which hurts the graphic fidelity of cause but you’d still have the reduced sde and the wide fov.
I’d probably prefer to set the FOV to 170° instead of reducing super-sampling. I won’t decide until my 8K (eventually) arrives.
I’m not sure that would work on the 8k
What @Heliosurge is trying to say is the 1060 6g card is not even in the minimum spec, so pimax 8k may not even run as it would fail its min benchmarks.
So it would not be possible to drop the SS I ED as you wouldn’t be able to get it to start in the 1st place!
I know what your saying though neal_white_iii ED does allow SS below 1.0 in its graphics setting but that would require you to actually have a hmd running at min spec or above to change that setting.
But in truth, we can’t be 100% sure what the final requirement specs are going to be until pimax release them. So here’s hoping!

Subampling on SteamVR level should work. It wall make look games really ugly and event hat might not be enough.
It should work to see if you like the headset but you are looking into upgradeing very soon. You are incredibly far from minimum spec.
Unfortunately not, pimax moved away from steamvr during version 2.0 of piplay for the 4k. Apparently this was so they could focus on their own renderer in preparation for the 8k
I see. I never owned a 4K, I have a vive. I was assuming a SteamVR compatible headset has to be compatible with SteamVR settings. If this is not the case my suggestion wont work obviously.
Compatability… Yes defiantly with steam but the 4k does not use the steamvr compositor, it has its own - piplay.
Compatible wise it is also compatible with Oculus home even works with revive and VORPX as well, you just cant use the settings in steamvr for SS

You can set ED SS level without running ED. You can manually edit the configuration file -or- more simply, run the excellent ED Profiler by Dr. Kaii.
Here’s a link to the ED forum page discussing the utility: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/262552-EDProfiler-A-New-Display-Switcher-Robust-Settings-Profiler-Switcher-Detector!
Here’s a direct link to the tool: Dr. Kaii - EDProfiler
I’m going to try that tonight! Thanks for the link.
You’re welcome. I’ve used the utility in the past (and still have it installed), but it’s most useful for switching to/from VR and a flat monitor. I don’t have a VR headset yet, so the utility is not that useful for me.
There is a bug in the Blue channel of the HUD color feature. Read the last few pages of the thread for workarounds.
The 1050ti is not old.
It’s just weak.
Perfect for 1080p@60hz but other than that it will be like pulling a caravan with an opel Corsa.
It’s just going to be a lot of thrashing and noise, but nobody is going anywhere.
