Currently, I’m using Simple VR Video Player, but it has always had a few minor issues which I have been able to live with. Also, the developer doesn’t seem to release updates to the software. For 2D videos, I sometimes use Virtual Desktop.
Last night I was nearly finished watching a 3D video (Avatar, ripped from my Blu-ray disk) and the framerate suddenly dropped to ~1 or 2 fps. I quit Simple VR Video Player and restarted it, but now the aspect ratio of the video is wrong and I haven’t been able to fix it, even after a reinstall and a reboot.
I’m looking for recommendations for a good VR video player which can play 2D, 3D side-by-side, and 3D 180 videos. What app(s) do you use? Thanks!
So glad to read this. For a moment I thought you were interested in watching PORN but luckily it’s avatar! Glad we cleared that up. Now, a friend of my who does watch porn sometimes (I only watch avatar myself too) tells me deoVr is the best way to go. Enjoy
For anyone wanting to use these players to watch nature videos, the PLAY’A VR app has a file called SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\PLAYAVR\PlayaVR_Data\VRBData\sites.jdat which lists the URLs of sites serving VR videos in a way that PLAY’A VR can read so they can be streamed. By default, IIRC, it doesn’t include all the compatible sites, but if you look at SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\PLAYAVR\PlayaVR_Data\VRBData\descr.json, you can add the missing ones to sites.jdat. On these sites, you can view the trailers an unlimited number of times.
DeoVR can be used to stream from the SLR site, again for the same purpose, but this site imposes a small daily limit on the number of trailers viewed without subscribing. SLR has some really high rez videos, but personally, for me, this kind of stuff isn’t worth a subscription. Getting old, I guess - nature has lost some of its appeal.
That’s one of my favorite 3D films, which I watch about once a year.
I sometimes watch flat movies too, since VR is comparable to a projector tv. This preference may change soon. I’ve ordered a much larger TV, a Sony with 4K, HDR, and 120 Hz. Honestly, the feature I’m looking forward to most is that it has an anti-glare coating. My current tv has a shiny screen (which has sucked ever since we moved into our current house) due to many bright reflections in the living room.
Hi. I am using different viewers. Simple VR, PLAY’A VR, Mermaid VR, DeoVR and VR Media Viewer work well, too. …partially. I ended up on Whirligig. It is one of the rare players which enable You to select (!) or even switch (!) subtitle and language during the session. It´s not only Avatar, but HiRes youtube videos like Baikal lake or certain underwater reef videos, very impressive with 8KX´s FoV.
There You can see the need for more resolution for 3D applications, videos etc.
For me, it´s cinema replacement in a way. Give Whirligig a try, use a dark background
I like the sound of that. I already have an xbox controller for my pc, so it would indeed be useful, especially in VR, where it’s easiest to do things by “feel”.
I second the “Whiligig” player. It’s hard to use at first, but give it some time. Once you know the way around it, you will like it. It offers some very useful features like “curve screen”, which is hard to find in other VR players.
So, my latest recommendation is “HereSphere VR video player”. on the one hand, not quite the level of Whirligig, on the other hand promising. But expensive I would say for a matured beta version.
I was watching 3D movies on BigScreen last night. It was impressive. Watching it using the desktop mode or whatever they called it…where another screen pop out.
I have almost 100 3D movies and I can testify that they look impressive in Home theater environment with the screen pop out. You just have to drag and place the screen wherever you desired.
Been throwing several files at whirligig. The problem is that the projection is off with some files. Tried the ‘fish eye’ and the other presets but nothing seems 100% right, while DeoVR plays them right. Did you guys experience this and have a solution? Other than that I really like the player.
Woah Heresphere player rocks! Even better than whirligig. Everything I have thrown at it plays super well and you can tweak about anything. Thanks mate really awesome tip I have a new ‘to go’ player now, easily beats them all

I agree, there are issues with Whirligig. You may try out another render path, whirligig allows to switch between VLC ,Media Foundation. The switch solves several issues. For me still Herespehere is a mixed bag because of the language setting / toggling and the subtitle issue. the developer responded it may take another year to add the toggle feature and correct language switch. My solution: I have to switch the player depending on the content.
Ah ok haven’t found that subtitle issue yet. Everything else seems to work really good. Sometimes audio doesn’t work in DeoVR. SimpleVR doesn’t play some files at all and whirligig seems to render wrong at times (although maybe solved with changing the render paths, havent experimented with that yet). But Heresphere plays everything just perfectly out of the box, I was quite amazed. And it’s a great plus that the developer is still developing it. For some reason it seems most other players are already abandoned by their developers (like SimpleVR and Whirligig)
OK, Whirligig has only slow development, seems to be a one man show. But the developer recently added a new version. There is even a beta, which unfortunately crashes the start position at least for my Pimax 8KX with a strange 2m below - offset. (not recommended)
But same on Heresphere, seems to be a one man show, too. So, I am reluctant to pay for something additionally 25 bucks, which still is beta and lacks the language/subtitle track function.
So, each may decide what fits best for him.
