Live Stream: Ask Me Anything!

Sorry Ive been busy setting up the live stream. Im going live in 10 minutes and will reply all your questions. I can also try games and stuff doing the stream. After the stream I will join the forum conversations

Are you reading the YT Chat or discord?

@SweViver This is what everyone is asking about: http://community.openmr.ai/t/dear-reviewers-i-still-have-some-questions/8286

I hope Sweviver doesn’t just pick and choose based on the chat window. It moves too fast. I hope he can answer questions posed in the forums here first.

Sadly he is getting bogged down with questions like can you use one basestation which is widely known. When he is back to earth he should answer these direct questions we have here in another video.

It was difficult enough to catch up with YouTube chat this time, so thats why I did not even use Discord this time… :frowning: Im sorry for that… it was all just too messy today when things started to struggle.

Had between 300-400 ppl in most of the time, its really a challenge to keep up :frowning: Im sorry guys Im still learning

Having that said, thank you so much for joining and I hope many of you got your questions answered at least…

Hey man- you dealt with the technical issues just fine. We are all super thankful for all the good work from you and Voodoo/MRTV- I think with all the hate around here, you guys have all been key to the positive outcome of the project.

While I am here, I think we are all very curious about that discovery you made on air regarding the lower res of the 8k Pi Tools setting. Can you escalate a convo with Pimax? The implications are kind of a big deal, as it would appear that if there was an issue with software contributing to the heavy performance hit due to the upscaling, then that could really be productive to the overall conversation. I suppose if it turns out that this resolution discrepancy is by design, then that ALSO tells us something.

Finally, as one of the people in this first release batch, I have been leaning towards the 8K not because of SDE issues, but as a more furture-proofed answer. I am terrified that something will come to light after we make our choices. After all it seems that the most effective corrections to the M2 only arrived just before the Berlin meetup. Even Sebastian admitted that he was resigned to a sub-par device until these last corrections were made. It sounds like those last key developments kind of showed up out of the blue. For me, it’s not unreasonable that the same could apply to developments of the scaler for the 8K.

The scenario for me is not so great- acquiescing to the 5K+ only to find out the 8K upscaler gets massive fixes, OR going with the 8K to find out it never reaches potential and (very much like the first FarCry) spend the next couple of years trying to make it run “well enough”

I think our group would all be MASSIVELY thankful if you could comment on this. It seems this is what it all really boils down to.

Hi @SweViver!

I’m very interested in your display port extension as my Vive is 10 meters away from my PC and it’s going to be very tricky to set it up any other way with my Pimax.

You mentioned the cheap 5m cables on Ebay worked but a lot of even the more expensive ones I can find say they max out at 2560Ă—1600 and 60fps which seems much lower than any of the resolutions you were working with. Can I just ignore these values?

I’m hoping to either get 2 x 5m ones and link them together or fork out a bit more and get a 10m one with an active signal booster which seems like a better bet - https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-DisplayPort-Cable-10m-Active-Black/dp/B00IFZN2O8

What do you think?

The value he was showing are the rendered resolution. On both pimax 8k and 5k+ those resolution get passed to the head set fixed at 1440p.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh yes of course! I can’t believe i forgot that. Thanks

Happy to help he’s probably so busy reading everything, could take a while to get him to answer ^.^

It’s a shame you could not get VD to work for the high res images. Maybe try again.

@sweviver @VoodooDE @mixedrealityTV

If the RTX 2080 ti offers the reported 30-40% gains would you still recommend the 5k over the 8k? Please say why.

@Heliosurge move to q thread plse.

Yeah the discovery was very unexpected I would say. Having that said I dont really think the resolution difference between (approx) 2900x2600 on 5K+ and 2700x2500 on 8K to be the main factor here though. The scaler is simply to blame here. The native passthrough of the signal in the 5K+ will always look more native and also the straight horizontal/vertical pixel matrix arragement will many times do the text look more sharper. Not necessarily more readable but sharper.

I will investigate the resolution difference this week!

But this is generally normal with upscaling. @neal_white_iii & another user posted about sharpening image prior to upscaling to improve quality.

Yep, I think we will never gain the same clarity on the 8K with an upscaler. But having that said, the image can easily be as sharp, as long as we render the games in higher resolution before downsampling and upscaling.

I think a lot of folks here are coming to this conclusion, so it helps to hear it from you. Now just to drill down a little more, do you think these scaler limitations can be mitigated in software, or do you think it is a limit of the actual chip in the headset? And it’s totally okay if that answer is out of your wheel house

Better to use a good upscaler than spending a thousand euros more on the latest graphics card just to fix a little blurring. There is upscalers that use all individual pixels to get a better image.
I think it’s better to modify the image to counteract unwanted upscaler effects, at least.
Don’t you think, @deletedpimaxrep1?

And at lower FPS- compounding the cost on the hardware side of things. Shit. This really breaks my heart. I think this officially puts me in camp 5+. I really wanted to buy for the future with the 8k, but it seems that unless Pimax delivers a hail mary in software, the 8K will always be working harder to generate better and eventually superior visuals.

Lemme ask you @SweViver - since you are going to have one of each- is the plan that the 5K+ is your “daily driver” and you are hedging you bets long term on the 8K?

Voodoo said he has not decided which one he will pick until he test out the 8K with 2080ti. Looking forward to that.
