I am an experienced VR user. I have Vive, Oculus CV1, DK2 and DK1. My system is a 4790K OC’d to 4.5 GHz, an OC’d GTX 1080, and 16 GB RAM.
I just received my Pimax 4K, brand new and set it up. I also got a NoloVR so I set it up with the instructions and download links here: https://www.nolovr.com/pimax
There is no sticker with serial number on my Pimax 4K. I purchased it brand new from USA seller “seducedinc”.
The problem: No matter how I adjust the display it looks wrong. My IPD is about 67.5 mm, but at this IPD setting it is very very bad. The best I can get it with the IPD adjustment (in PiPlay) is about 57 mm, and it is still too bad to use at that setting. If I focus on what in the center of the screen, like the green cross, it is a little hard to focus but looks clear, but everything else on the screen is like my eyes are crossed.
Just FYI I had this same problem with VorpX. I spent many hours trying to adjust VorpX to work for me but it was always like I was cross eyed. This also happens with 360 degree videos like Oculus Jaunt, but all native games for all my Oculus headsets and the Vive I do not have any problems, they look perfect.
Hehe, it’s definitely not you or your specific Pimax unit. I have the exact same real IPD as you: 68 mm, but just like you I get best results with pimax IPD 57mm. It kind of works though for me, I don’t feel it’s bad BUT the thing is that when I use it for like half an hour and put off the Pimax, I feel quite bad, I don’t see well and I need about 30 minutes to adjust again. I think is because of the pimax IPD my eyes are forced to look too much inwards.
I think this is caused by the Pimax not having hardware IPD (which I think the Oculus and Vive have, right ?). Or maybe it’s a lense issue, I don’t know …
BTW I found that when I watch for example a 3d SBS movie, the focus is about right when I look to the middle. However when I look to the sides, the focus is wrong again and I get crosseye vision.
Yes this sounds very similar to me. Also yes, Vive and Oculus CV1 have hardware/mechanical IPD adjustment.
DK1 and DK2 did not have mechanical IPD adjustment and I did always get a little bit of this feeling with them but not as bad as this.
I just experimented now and if I hold the headset in just the right place, and tilted just a little bit to the left (asymmetry of my face I guess) it looks pretty good but as you say still causes eye strain and even after just ten minutes my eyes feel bad afterward.
It is a shame because the resolution of the display is nice.
That’s indeed exactly my experience, tilting it slightly can give you a near perfect image. Yet it causes eye strain and indeed after 10 minutes already I feel kinda bad.
Hopefully the Pimax 8k will have hardware IPD. It’s at least possible since it has 2 displays, so it would be relatively easy to implement. @deletedpimaxrep1
That’s not going to help him. He has the same IPD as me and found the exact same optimum Pimax IPD as I did, which is about a cm lower than the real IPD. In my opinion it’s due the software IPD.
If you measure the distance between the lense centers it’s about 6.2mm. I think that’s the issue: Since our real IPD is about 6.8, our eyes have to look inwards and the lines of sight are thus angled towards each other, meeting the display at about 5.7mm.
This theory would implicate though if you have a real IPD below 6.2 then the Pimax IPD would actually be higher than 6.2. Not sure if it holds true, but if so, then that’s the real issue indeed.
Software IPD adjustment indicated correct numbers on DK2, but the fixed physical lens IPD gave a little bit of that cross eyed feeling. Someone was selling 3d printed lens adapters for various IPD’s.
Its not IPD issue, its problem with focal length of lenses ( only 0.4 meters in my measurement ). Oculus DK2, CV1, HTC Vive has minimum 1.2-1.5 meters.
My eyes with Pimax try always hold focus and cant relax like in Oculus. I tested all HMD and only Pimax has this issue.
My new headset is crystal clear (first one had the blurry center problem)
I can get my IPD set correctly to where the cross is clear (57ish I believe) and everything looks good. but I feel like I’m having to slightly cross my eyes, like the lenses are too close together so even through its a clear picture its still a bit for a strain.
I could easly print some adapters for my glasses lenses but would that help? I don’t have a clarity issue…
I think what is needed for me would be an adapter that somehow puts lenses further apart that i can focus on, that in turn focus correctly to the pimax’s lenses so that I can look straight ahead and get proper IPD instead of having to cross my eyes.
I’m going to run to the drug store and grab some cheap lenses that are pretty close to my RX and see if I can make an adjustable holder for them that will allow me to adjust the IPD AS WELL as the ANGLE of the lenses… so maybe I can have them further apart, but perhaped angled as such that I get a clear image…
Also ill get a second set that work WITH my contacts in in terms of close focusing.
Will post updates, if it looks promising ill start a new thread.,
