IMHO, based on all the speculation and lack of information it seems that the 8K headset that we backed on KS is not going to be what has been expected, with a choice to switch to 5K+ with lower specs. Some people has been asking to allow 8K backers to switch to 8KX assuming 8KX will be what 8K supposed to be.
Now, what I’ve been thinking, Pimax may be willing to do that, but because of they may be losing money on that, plus managing KS backers and money money may not be so easy, it’s may be not possible to do that (because of their investors, managing overhead, etc).
If, on the other head, they can start another KS campaign for 8KX, maybe for existing 8K backers to be able to switch their 8K pledge to the new 8KX one or to hop onto the new campaign as a new backer, this may prove to be a good idea for people and Pimax.
Pimax already proved that they can deliver, the current situation with 8K and 5K+ is not their fault, but a hardware limitations in play;
this may give them a new source of money to continue 8KX development;
their technical partners may become more cooperative seeing much demand from the community for new tech for wide FOV systems;
Well as it seems now the panel is a fake 4k panel and 8k-X won’t make much difference. Exactly as pimax themselves said by the way (that they couldn’t see much difference). We need a better panel.
Who said 8KX must come with the same panel? Let’s say new KS 8KX campaign with new 2 x 4K screens (similar to 5K+ screens), native 2 x 4K support, new improved lences, all to come end of 2019 or 2020. Do you think people will have interest in that?
I afraid that may they still don’t have enough info to do it like can’t making 8k to be better than 5k+. 8k x is limeted where they can refund any time or waiting for 1-2 years.
We know that the 8k panel is bad, so that almost 60-70% backers will shoot for the 5k +, that means that it will practically be left with the stock of 8k panels, probably and also 100 $ of losses in accesiorios .
What will incur many expenses for pimax.
I think pimax must talk to the backers and suggest they wait a little longer and change the panels for $ 100 to cover the expenses of the previous panel and buy the new one at least for the most part.
This would be an impulse to get a more powerful commercial version, an improvement in the image of the company and also cover some panel losses.
I see many advantages in this, because it is a win-win.
I think PIMAX will be studying all the options, or maybe they already have some panels in test.
I would not call it a fake 4K panel because that suggests that there is a fraudulent element to it, but it seems to be less impressive on a pixel by pixel comparison compared to e.g. the 5K+'s panels due to these various subpixel constellations which apparently can be applied and have quite an impact on quality while still being technically considered to be 4K.
I do agree that Pimax, in their own interest, should reconsider the design & components of the 8K for any successor or 8K(X) product at least, because this would be the product which could really leave a mark on the VR landscape in 2019/2020 (although the 5K+ will surely leave its mark too because it will the best affordable headset available for a while).
They have already done a lot of development work, so they could sureyl tunr around the implementation of a new, improved 4K panel in shorter time, just as they in fact did on the 5K+.
The trickier part would be the upscaler, which should be optionally usable, and ideally foveated rendering, because even in 2020 the GPU load for native 2x4K will be really tough to handle.
Reading all the scientists and theorists comments on these forums surely collectively you could get some funding to make the ultimate VR headset? Now that would be pretty awesome.
I have a great idea too, how would it be to start 8kx-2 Kickstarter, with more fov, more displays, more pixel, more more, with release date not in 2019-20 but in 21-20, pretty sure graphic cards will be powerfull enough by then. Or…no, wait, I want even more! How about to make new Kickstarter for 5kx and 8kx-2x!? Can’t wait anymore!
P.s. bullsh1t topic - like many others generating stupid ideas instead of letting pimax to finish their work, which they will do of course and might need another 1-2 years for this, to work ON CURRENT headsets that you bitches didn’t even tried yet but already claimed as not good enough.
I agree - I don’t think there are many 8K backers who would like to stay with 8K now. The question is if there are any 4K panels that can do on par with 5K+.
I don’t understand how the backers in the first 100 can make a decision based on the information (or better to say lack of it).
I know that making the wrong choice between 8K or 5K+ now is not the end of the world. Anyway, if Pimax will release 8K+ in a few months, I can go and buy it. And if there will be 8KX in a year or so, I can go and buy it too. Not ideal situation, a lot of money waste, but not end of the world.
But. based on the current situation with wide FOV headsets, 5K+ is a big step forward, and I hope if consumer price for 5K+ will be reasonable, it’ll turn market towards wide FOV headsets (development and price wise).
Well it’s as real as an interlaced 1080p TV. But you’re right, the term ‘fake HD’ wasn’t used back then, I think people called it “HD ready”. But when it’s just half 4k resolution I think people could call it ‘fake 4k’.
Sweviver said before his pics were not a good depiction of reality. He also confirmed himself he previously doctored pics before uploading. Not exactly a very trustworthy source in my opinion
Yes Sweviver said none of tge through the lens pics are good representations if what one sees with one’s own eyes.
Truthfully we need special cameras to have truly accurrate pics as @mmorselli said. Your camera phones he said applies too many auto corrections & sweviver mentioned the camera sensor’s pixel capture arrangement.
