Is PiMax view angle really 60 degrees?

I read a comment made by one of the users (Harh), he claims that view angle of these goggles is a shocking 60 degrees. Was getting ready to order the PiMax but that’s a deal breaker for me.

Can someone else confirm this? (someone not from PiMax, please). How does the view angle compare to Occulus or Vive which are supposed to be 110?

How can we measure it?

Hi! Pimax is 110 degrees, not 60 degrees

I can supply with the equation used to get the viewing angle. I can’t calculated myself because I don’t know the distance from the lense to the lcds.

x = distance from your eyes (or lense) to lcd displays.
y = half the width of the both lcd displays (half the widest part of pimax, in front) = 9cm (according to dimensions)

View Angle = 2 x arctan (y/x) = 2 arctan (9/x)

– if you want me to do the calculation, just send me the measurement. Again, looking for independent info here, so I’ll be ignoring any comments made by PiMax team.

How we can measure x? We can’t see where the surface of the LCD display is located because it is inside the casing.

In order to maximize viewing angle, the lcd will be placed all the way at the front of the casing. You can assume 1cm thickness. So you just have to figure out where the lense is relative to the end of casing.

Dont even dare to buy this product. It is nothing compared to the Oculus. Just a box of plastic

I mean technically that what all HMDs are but I understand what you mean, Davobkk. I think I’ll just wait for now.

For anyone else interested, this answered my question very nicely: http://community.openmr.ai/t/help-us-to-verify-eye-relief-of-westerner-it-may-impact-the-fov/537

Genuinely happy with my purchase, cost less than half an oculus would. It has been a bit frustrating at times getting it working but in general very satisfied.

yes it is about 70 degrees to me, its like looking at a square tv, you can see the sides and top of the lens in use so its like everything is played with a frame around it, u can’t at all on my vive. Only way around this is to pull the HMD off your face about 1cm so you can’t see the edges but this increases the feeling of using binoculars, i’m using modified packing foam that does not squash like provided foam, under the orig foam, to move further from face, but as stock yes, i’d say 70, he says 60, its is not 110 or even 100 that is for sure if the vive is 110. Or maybe the vives fresnel lenses remove edges and increase fieald of view, that is my theory, but it is not close to vive otherwise.

The image quality and sharpness is much better but FOV sucks. For me if the FOV was really 110 i would be happy, perfect purchase, but it is a lie to tell people 110. There are many images online of fov in relation to eyes, and it is not 110.

OK i can now clarify with 100% certainty that the field of view in my pimx is 75 degrees. Simply install virtual desktop to play a 3d video, and select fisheye option which lets you change the field of view. Keep increasing or decreasing the field of view until the video is at the edges of the pimax field of view. I get 75 Degrees, any higher and the video goes beyond the pimax field of view. I have also gooogled field of view which gave me many images all of which seem to confirm it is around 75 degrees.

People who buy pimax who never tried oculus, vive or psvr may not know that they are onnly getting 75, but as i can do side by side comparison myself i can tell you the vives FOV is a LOT wider. Pimax is like google cardboard, can see black borders also. Someone said it is software or firmware but i cant try anything older than 1.2.34 as it won’t detect device but I am doubting it is software, I think it is bad angle of lens or distance of screen.

Please, everyone that owns pimax try what i just instructed above and see if you can get beyond 75 degrees.
