The thing is, I have zero experience with VR headsets. Is this SDE normal? Is it better than on other, lower-res headsets? Or is something wrong with my particular Pimax?
The fact that you have zero experience with VR gave it away. Grab a GearVR and throw a 1440p or 1080p phone in it. Then come back and talk to us about SDE.
SDE is not eliminated with the Pimax, but it’s the least you’ll find right now.
Hehe, very nicely put. The Pimax isn’t perfect but compared to a GearVR it’s just a whole different world. So much SDE that you try it 3 times and then throw the thing in a corner and never look at it again.
I’m actually quite happy with the SDE on the Pimax. Now all we need is 4k input mode ! Can’t wait till they’ve fixed that up.
I’m stuck at 1080p with my Pimax because I’m running it from my tablet with an iGPU (Iris Pro 5200 graphics). I wish there was a way for me to get 2K, maybe someone here has an idea.
I updated the firmware and I’m running beta PiPlay but display properties are still locked to 1080p.
As you know the iGPU isn’t even officially supported. I wouldn’t know how to get it to work, maybe someone will find a solution by luck but I’d suggest to just get a GTX 1060, they’re not that expensive. Then again if you want to run it on a laptop it’s going to be harder.
BTW if you’re using the headset primarily for SBS 180/360 movies, then it doesn’t matter too much. The limitation isn’t the resolution of the headset, it’s the resolution of the input files. Currently there aren’t input files higher than 4k available, which is about the optimum for 1080p (given that with 90 degrees horizontal and vertical you’re only displaying 1/4th of the input data at a time). So you for SBS movies you won’t notice much difference anyway, until they start shooting them in 8k.
