Don’t do drugs with your 5K+ bro
At least my 203 has cracked.
My 5K+ 203 has developed cracks too 7 months ago, about 1-2 cm long at every edge. I fixed it carefully with superglue and it hasn’t gotten worse since then (took the discount for 8KX instead of RMA)
But the problem is that it has lost a lot of value if you wanted to sell it, assuming that someone would want to buy it from you in that condition.
Look. I’m not saying it’s OK in any way… Of course is not OK.
I also have a 5K+ with cracks which I probably can’t sell.
I’m just saying it’s probably not going to get anyone killed.
Mine is also a 203* but I really think it’s not a single batch. There’s been waaaaaaaaaay to many reports for that to be true (we’ve had this discussion a lot of times before)…
Some people received several broken units in sequence (when RMA’ing)…
I’m not complaining about your comment, I’m just trying to point out that to the already bad reputation of Pimax for sale, these flaws are added, so they lose a lot of their value.
My Pimax 8K has no cracks (for the moment) but before I sell it as I have the Pimax 8KX on the way, I might keep it, for the little value and to have replacement lenses. And replacing the housing is expensive.
We are taking for granted that we will be able to buy the lenses cheaply, but I doubt it.
203 was newer than 202. 202 was first. 203 and 204 was supposed to be fixed. With 204 and Artisan supposed to be fixed
I agree… I don’t think there’s much interest in the old headsets (at least not from anyone who can actually research a bit)…
Hopefully, they’ll do better with the new headsets.
They can’t just keep saying it was only a few if it also starts happening on the newer headsets
Really? Where does the 200 model fit in that schedule? My 8K is 200… my thoughts were it was the earliest. my 5K+ is 203… I use the 8K more but neither of them have cracks.
8k has a different set of the first 3 serial numbers. 5k+ is 202, 203, 204. 202 being the first of the 5k+ and had the black dot pattern issue.
Were there reports of 204 5k+ with cracking issues?
Not sure how much the new housing contributes to that (probably the majority goes towards the MAS) but the 8kX is a lot heavier than the 5k+.
Thermal expansion, fatigue limit and too much torque used when tightening the screw fittings. To be fair when they did two week’s work of material testing this would probably not have shown up with high enough frequency to warrant a design change.
If your index is Meh (it was for me) you just can refund it till the 14th day from delivery
(Very, very good support at valve btw)
For the rest of the discussion, well…
You know Scheppes’ commercials :
“What did you expect?”
The innovation was good, it’s implementation is average, the manufacturing is bad and it’s retail part is worse…
I don’t know if you will have an issue selling it because of the cracks. I didn’t have any issues selling my cracked 8K (although the cracks were slightly less visible than yours). I just mentioned in the eBay description that cracks are a known issue with the 8K and that mine had them.
I think the bigger problem for resellers might be the existing 5K+ and Artisan units you are competing against.
can you post a pic, I want to fix mine to as seamlessly as possible
I know I wouldn’t. Such a shame , i wonder if Pimax knew this was going to happen and that’s why they didn’t just let us return our headsets to them for the upgrade.
Imagine warehouses full of brand new cracked 5k+'s waiting to be sold.
This is as much a problem for them as it is for us.
Yeah selling an 8k is a bad value proposition even if it were new. Did we get any confirmation that they have been discontinued? I can’t imagine any more of them rolling off the assembly line now that the 8k+ is here.
Is that a fact? how much heavier
yeah honestly, I know the 5k+ has one more fov setting higher but its really not by much.
The better panels of the artisan and the price , may have more or less silently killed the 5k+
All pimax needs are 2(3) models
Artisan, 8k+ and 8kX
truth is I don’t think 8k+ needs to exist either.
they should scrap the 5k+ and 8k+ and coat all their artisans in blue rubber
i think the reason they are making those limited rugged artisans is a test because I cant see why they would want to put out more cracked artisans knowing that this issue exists
They real fallout will be 1-2 years from now when all of these buyers report all over the internet that their artisans are cracking.
8kX+MAS is about 950g and 5k+ with headstrap about 650g (give or take, used a luggage scale…)
So “a lot” is a little exaggerated, it’s about 45% more where the majority is probably MAS vs headstrap.
lol thats really a bad weight comparison.
i think we need weight without the strap for 8kX.
anyone have an 8kX who can do an accurate measurement?
@generic ?
