HP Reverb G2 vs. Pimax 8KX - My Full Review and Comparison

The display, SDE, I had a Rift S at this time and I prefered the S (talking about Oculus hmd)
But everything else was good, stand alone headset is great when not using the link.

Gotcha, well, you’ll be happy with the Quest 2 then I think. The SDE is much better than the original Quest or Rift S. It’s only slightly worse than the G2 and 8K X (and probably your plus as well since they’re the same panels)

Yes cant wait to try it out

Yeah, the quest 2 is a big upgrade coming from a Vive or any Pimax headset and the wireless is really handy for some games, but can’t wait to get my hands on my G2

…Pimax 5k+?

No, including 8KX.
My ipd is 64 and the 8KX didn’t go low enough on IPD adjustment to allow me to see clearly in both eyes, so for me in terms of clarity, comfort, colours, black levels, SDE, usability, compatibility… the quest2 is an upgrade from an 8KX because it actually works.

do you still own any pimax headset just wondering?

Seeing you just hate everything about pimax to the bone I cannot imagine you still own one.

Nope, I sold my 8kx. Not sure how that makes any difference as Pimax haven’t changed their lenses since I had one.

My IPD is 64 too and I’m using 64 in PiTool with no offset and I have really good clarity in both eyes.

I’ve said it many times before, but I believe most issues boil down to lense (HMD) to lense (eye) distance not being right.

I’m using double-sided velcro strips between the cowling and the VRMust foam to increase the distance.

EDIT: Maybe Your specific issue is different distance between nose and eyes? That would actually make sense as it doesn’t have a as big of an impact on low FOV headsets.

My ipd is symmetrical, so no that isn’t the issue. I do wear glasses, so there is a limit to how close I can get to the lens, but increasing the distance only made things worse.

Very interesting @evertec. Usually you’re one of the guys whose opinion I share 1:1, so this is hopeful!
And while I of course value @NextGenVR’s opinion he’s one of the guys I disagree most with (I didn’t share his enthusiasm for the StarVR’s resolution (which was quite bad imho), nor his love for the 8k-X that much). So based on that I’ll probably love the G2 haha. But I just learned I need to wait 10 more days …

Keep in mind you may have to remove the facial interface it comes with and use a different face cushion like dmel and I have done. By default the fov was horrible for my face shape, less than g1, more like rift s. It was increased by almost 15 degrees when using the alternative face cushion.

I’m definitely getting prescription lenses for my G2 so I can do this.

If its an issue with the distance then usual means the optics magnification is not correct to the distance of the display. Pimax should do test on that regard since many users do have issues.

Isn’t the issue that there’s no eye relief? I.e. no easy way to adjust.

Keep in mind that both Evertec and Geof sold the 8kX long before the Backlight adjustment was restored. So some of the perceptions are based on memory when the colors were dull.

Hi @NextGenVR thanks for the interesting comparisons.
I have an X too, but i have more trouble getting the optics right after owning the 8k and 8k+, the margins seem smaller but i think for now i have them workable but not perfect.
I preordered the G2 because of that. I have a few questions
How is the Glare in Bigscreen Beta compared to the 8kX?
How is the Alliasing in bright scenes for example in Skyrim, projectcars and Elite dangerous.
(If i remember it right the aliasing in ED was a lot less in the G1)
Do you see the sides of the displays when coming closer to the lenses? (that was a problem that i had with the G1 when trying to get a bigger FOV)
Thanks

Currently loading the battery but just on the loading screen I can say what I think about the panel.
Ah …oh…I am surprised this is indeed very good, slightly bigger SDE that the 8k+ but not that much, incredibly better than the Artisan and so the Index.
Very promising.

I could not see any glare at all when looking at the glare test in the TestHMD tool. It was white text on black background and no glare was there.

If you get too close to the lenses, you do see the box shaped panels behind the lenses. So I have to get close but not too close.

No Aliasing. But im not 100% sure what aliasing looks like.
