Hmm. Well I guess it would come down to how much you rate a bigger fov & how good was your experience with your 5k+
I won’t advise you on what to do as I believe it’s a decision based on personal preference & the cost may play a bigger role for some than others.
But I will say if you are expecting the 8kx within the next month or so, it will likely have a fairly high resale value on ebay
Resale value will also depend on G2 success , it can probably be modified for better fov using 6mm face cushion .
8kx needs at least 90hz in normal fov and hopefully 120 small fov
I already have 2.0 lighthouse and index controllers. I mostly sim race and clarity in the distance is more important to me then fov. I LL use whichever headset is better for sim racing.
ah cool, i used bestware (german based) as system active (UK based) page was down, looks like it’s up now, don’t know if i should switch to this or not?
I have no problem with people who switch to the potato league. If he look for me from left to right in the game, I stand behind him and whisper “game over”
Potato League, priceless now that’s the true reason for the potato name for the smaller than small FOV.
I’ll have to remember that one when people ask me if i have an Index HMD, nope I did not join the Potato League. I skipped that and went straight to the Wide Fow League
I have to admit, I consider the 8KX overpriced. So if you are paying the full price, it would make sense to first try the G2 and see if you are happy with it. If not, you can still order an 8KX (preferably from a local retailer)…
From a value proposition point of view the G2 is the reeasonable choice, for sure.
But if the money is not your biggest concern then I would just let it stand and see which one you prefer at the end, when having them at home.
…then pimp your setup by adding Index controllers & base stations…
I find it tricky to place it in a order of precedence - it very much depends on the application/game. If I play Skyrim or watch a movie, it’s just not the same with a narrow FoV. I stopped playing Skyrim, which is one of my all-time favorites (first in flat, now in VR), when my 8K malfunctioned, and will start again when the 8KX arrives. Fro Elite Dangerous, another all-time favorite, I can adapt to narrow FoV more easily (usually the space is empty and okay, the view of the cockpit is narrowed down. But still I do notice the absence of the wide FoV, and much prefer to play it wide.
But for other games it can be the case that you hardly notice the absence of the FoV.
So I guess this is a matter of which games you really love to play and how it is impacted by the FoV. For e.g. watching “nature movies” though it is completely unnecessary and I rather have highest PPI in the central section…
You can add me to the list I pre ordered both, I’ll bet I get the G2 before the 8KX?? Also the G2 Pre order money is still with me!!! 8KX money gone right at order lets see Oct, 2019
Been in the realistic side of things not to mention that for racing and other dangerous sports SIM you would probably be wearing a helmet with narrow FOV in real life;-)
I also have pre-ordered both and am now expecting the G2 to arrive first. Hopefully the X will then follow soon so the battle can begin and the loser earns a nice spot on Ebay
I used to be in the Army Air corps and flew often in gazelle’s , xplane 11 has some nice ones and it brings back memories ,
Your dead right about the narrow fov being realistic , the helmets they issued were visible at the sides and top so about 130 ish fov i guess
In some games having that extra FoV surely makes for a competitive advantage. In my alltime fav game, Serious Sam TLH, a wave shooter, I found it easier to play on the pimax headsets than on my index. However I always ended up using the index for the better colors and better immersion because of the better optics. It’s just more fun on the Index. So to each their own, for me it’s not always about competition, but more about enjoying a game to the fullest. That being said, maybe the X will win in that area, who knows. That’s why I want to compare them both.
One thing that might be of interest to you @Axacuatl since I’m also a SkyrimVR fan, is playing it while using the Pimax Vision 8kX and the VRIK full body mod, i observed something out of the corner of my eye above my sholder and thought what is that and suddenly realized it was the top of the bow now visable if i glanced over my shoulder. Even while looking strait forward do to the way the body moves using vrik i can see the top of the bow moving up as my ingame charachter moves forward. Thats something i’m sure you would never see in potatoe mode and yes i only use large FOV in that game.
Thanks, will add it to the list of mods - I need to set it up properly again because somehow I think my SkyrimVR went back to Vanilla version during the year of absence.
(unless the 8KX sucks, in which case I will have to dry a tear and go with the Index…)
And I will add the bHaptics Tactot vest mod too, that should be quite an immersive experience to stroll through the lush fields and snowy mountains of Skyrim again
