The max 5 meter cable Length for the 8kx is a deal breaker for me so I will just have to wait and see if Pimax come up with a solution .
Same for me, but I’m certain it can be done using fiber optic cables (though it’s expensive).
Agreed! I just hope that it can be extended at least in upscaling mode or native normal fov mode by 2m! Or if they can get wireless working on upscaled mode or normal fov. If these are not feasible then I have no choice but to the 8k+ to make sure wireless works and cable extensions as well!
I agree… I might bet on fiber optics working and go for the 8KX just because… Well, because it exists… And it will probably last longer (though that can also be said about the 5K+ if You supersample the out of it)…
Probably this has been posted elsewhere in the forum already, but I just cannot keep up with it anymore but didn’t want to not mention this option to you guys:
In the context of the Oculus Link cable a bloke used fiber optics to extend it considerably. However, this comes at quite a price (think lower to medium range of three digits) because you will need a converter (and possibly a power supply on the other side of the fiber optics cable)
There you go, now you can go and buy an 8KX without any reason for complaint. Scratch that, its only 17 megabits/s I guess you are out of luck.
I wonder if something like this would work. Club 3D | DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 Extension Cable 8K60Hz M/F 2m/6.56ft
It’s 2m…
It was pointed couple times - 8kx is NOT extendable. It has a very special cable that will work on the limits, its not even possible to replace this one with another 5m cable. Any extension might disrupt and create issues.
For now… Trust me, someone will find an extension that will work. Might not be cheap but if course it can be extended. It’s USB3 + DP after all.
It can be extendable in upscaled mode or reduced fov native res mode perhaps but for some reason Pimax refuses to simply answer this question by flipping on upscaled mode and putting a 2m extension DP cable on. Not sure why they don’t want to put this to bed already.
Because that would be a supported solution…
What they could do is just release the exact specs so people can work it out themselves.
Sorry to spill it to you all but we are approaching the physical limits of data transmission possible over DP 1.3 and copper. When you have such high signal frequencies as we do now over copper EMF becomes a serious problem, the wave form is so condensed that even small fluctuations in nearby magnetic fields are going to corrupt data.
When your DP cable runs out the back of your PC past a PSU which has a built in transformer you are going to be experiencing EMF leakage, ALOT on anything over 600W which given the requirements for the PIMAX becomes likely. The chances of induction of electromotive force from external magnetic fields increases with cable length.
EDIT:
I suggested this a while back: https://community.openmr.ai/t/li-fi-wireless-for-pimax-8k/3604
Ideally in the future the base stations will be able to transmit video signals directly to the IR receivers on the headset.
