How do you properly set the IPD?

Okay, I can’t get a clear answer on this. Plain, and simple, how do you set the IPD to where it won’t cause eyestrain? Should I use my near IPD, or my far IPD?

Maybe this could help.

So, I think this is what I should do. If you read this, it shows how Pimax’s IPD settings work when you change the hardware IPD to see through the center of the lenses. https://community.openmr.ai/t/clarifying-near-ipd-x-distant-ipd-confusion/14809?u=shinytomb

From my understanding the best thing to do if you’re going for a natural looking image in the center of the lens sweet spot, is to add a + IPD offset for the difference between your IPD and what it takes for your eyes to get in the center of the sweet spot.

For example, if my IPD is 63 and I need to adjust the hardware IPD to 60 to see through the center of the sweet spot, I should add a +3 IPD offset in Pitool. Otherwise, the image that Pimax’s software gives will be in the incorrect position. More specifically it would be too inward, and would leave the user feeling like they’re looking at their nose. It would probably also screw with the 3D feel of VR. I haven’t tested this yet, but this is my hypothesis.

Another example would be if your IPD is 68, but you need to change the hardware IPD to 65 in order to see through the center of the lenses, you should put the IPD offset in Pitool as +3. Otherwise, the same problems would occur.

Again, this is just my hypothesis but if anyone else wants to try this out let me know how it goes.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. The answer seems to be: It depends on the person. This is the procedure I suggest:

If you are still having problems, where you simply can’t get both eyes to be clear at the same time, try this:

What do you think about this? Just typed up this essay. If I understand how IPD works on Pimax, then I think this might fix eyestrain for people using “near IPD” to see through the center of the lenses. https://community.openmr.ai/t/hypothesis-on-how-to-setup-ipd-for-clear-image-wont-work-if-your-ipd-is-really-low/32359?u=shinytomb

your hypothesis. the right place to confirm this is the forum. i belong to the group with lower ipd. I have a relatively narrow face. I cut foam and put it under the cover. it helps. I don’t have to do that with the 5k +. in the picture the foam is still very big. Work gradually until the sharpness and comfort is right. it also helps a lot in putting that weight on the side of the face. and the hmd can no longer slip sideways. very comfortable to wear. you should try to find the right settings for you using a test image. everyone has a different face.

Yeah if your IPD is really really low, like to the point where no matter what you can’t get your eyes to see through the sweet spot, then this won’t help you.

I’m close to the limit, but still solvable and usable. I pull out the foam wedges until it fits. that may look a lot in the picture. but it is not. my ipd is 63-64. what bothers is my big nose. the hmd is poorly constructed in terms of space.
