Has the Pimax Crystal Super died?

Hi,
Since the last thread on the Super was closed it has become very quiet about the Crystal Super.
Are there any news about it or has it been abandoned?
The RTX 5090 is about to be released at the beginning of 2025 and it could be a great GPU for the Super.

On paper, this could be my next headset. But Pimax sometimes withdraws from big announcements without a word, so if there is no update by December, I will go for the Somnium VR1

Died or will be DOA.

Hi,
I hope not. Still have high hopes that Pimax will produce the Crystal Super.
If they do, then I will surely go for it.

Nah, we are preparing the updates for it.

What I really don‘t get it is their marketing strategy: they announced the Super together with the Light. The Light was pretty much ready to go, they released it shortly after the announcement and had/have a product which makes sense (albeit in too big a housing due to the 12K heritage).

But by co-announcing the Super, for me the Light felt obsolete from day one: why would I pay a substantial amount of money to get a headset which would feel inferior as soon as the Super becomes available with not only superior resolution, but as importantly higher FoV & smaller housing. There is no way I could convince myself to buy the Light given this announcement.

Weird strategy - I bet it harmed their sales.

At this stage I honestly expect another rain cheque kind of update which make sit sound like it‘s just around the corner but at the same time nothing specific in terms of release date. Let me guess, they‘ll announce to demo it at the ECS?

And perhaps a trade-in program? Sorry, this one is savage, there will be a number of customers who are saddled up with an 8KX they never intended to buy as such - just because they fell for the 12K trade-in trap.

But hey, sure, let‘s see what the update will tell us. But at this stage it feels a lot like the Pimax 12K Experience™.

Does nobody realize that the delay of the 12K/Super is mainly because of the delay of the 5090/DP bandwith limitation of the 4000er RTX series?

As soon as the 5090 is available beginning next year, Pimax should deliver the Super and maybe the 12k variant. But i really think the Super is the successor of the 12k which is obsolet because of nvidia did choose to give the 4000 series not the newest DP Version/not enough bandwith to drive those cracy amount of pixels…

Love your enthusiasm.

DP1.4 is definitely a barrier but if Pimax don’t have access to pre production RTX5000 series GPUs, I don’t see how they could be developing for it already.

With the pixel count of the 12K, they should have bet on DFR & dynamic foveated transport.

Let‘s see what they have to say in the update, and what actually happens in the coming months.

Pimax has a good relationship with Nvidia, so why won‘t they have access to preproduction models?

They have RX7000 cards with DP2.0. They had time to and fixed the issues with these cards and the 8kX. For some reason a new Hardware Revision was necessary.

I am certainly not „enthusiastic“ but try to figure out a bigger picture. My old 8kX collects dust. I am charging the batteries of my Crystal and wait for the 5090 and Crystal Super to arrive.

You’d have to know what other headsets are out at the same time. Other companies like Shiftall have announce new headsets recently that look really good. The Megane Super Light looks smaller than the Pimax Super, has 4k OLEDs and pancake lenses for £1500 here in the UK. MRTV says it’s the clearest HMD he’s ever seen.

Maybe the Pimax Super will have a greater FOV but will it appeal to people like me who don’t play flight sims and prefer FPSers? Who knows.

Haha yes. CES 2025. At least we got a tent last year which was a step up from previous years.

Last year we had the 60gig module that never saw the light of day as a finished product. Crystal, a product for sitting flight simmers. Who wants to go wireless? No one?

So will we see the Crystal Super? A headset that will surely be a replacement for the Crystal light? Or will it be so over priced it will make the Somnium VR1 look like a good deal?

I always look forward to Pimaxes crazy CESes. Lol

Hi,

Since I only play flight sims, I feel that the Crystal Suoer would be THE headset for me.

Damn not sure how I missed that meganeX 8k version, it’s up for preorder, seems quite promising indeed. MeganeX superlight 8K

Not going to preorder myself but really looking forward to the reviews.

I believe it was Skarredghost who said that he had seen some distortions in his hands-on with the MeganeX 8K, so I would really wait for the reviews of the production version. Apart from that they also are notorious for announcing headsets which then are hardly available, IIRC the MeganeX, their Matrix-design previous headset, was only available in Japan and only few units were delivered.

As to the Crystal Super, that could be more interesting even for non-simmers as the form factor was said to be substantially improved, it should be coming in a smaller housing tailored to the optical MicroLED and OLED modules. This should reduce the weight & make movement with the headset more enjoyable.

They say 30% smaller but how much is that volume v weight? It looks like Crystal Light weights over 800g. The MeganeX Superlight is under 185g. That still a huge difference for FPS players.

Pimax need to do a full reset on the Crystal Super design. There is absolutely no reason to be big and bulky in 2025 unless the FOV is over 140 which it’s not. I don’t see the justification for 800g.

If the displays, lenses and housing are smaller, it is reasonable to expect the weight to be less - although the eye-tracking will add some weight again.

Let‘s not argue too much about how „bad“ it is until we know the details… They are not going down the Bigscreen Beyond or MeganeX 8K path as the don‘t have pancake lenses available. But for you then the MeganeX 8K should do the trick, so why bother if Pimax get their act together on the Super or not?

My Crystal Light Pro with Dmas, steamVR faceplate and stock face / head cushions. Tether laid flat on tabletop next to scale. 961 grammes.

Have since fitted Studioform Creative face kit and rear cushion, Apache top strap. Soon will remove Apache to test the Pimax comfort top strap with Studioform Creative strap cover. Will get some weights as I go.

My original Crystal for reference 1335 grammes.

Studioform Creative face cushion, Valve Index rear head foam spacer, Pimax comfort top strap with Studioform Creative cushion, Dmas, steamVR faceplate, no DP repeater box, fibre optic tether laid flat on tabletop next to scale. Battery inserted in headset.

Surprisingly comfortable and stable even for roomscale; improving the fit minimise intertia, thoroughly enjoyable to use, thin fibre optic tether connection reliable and minimises any drag on headset 6.5 metres is very welcome, eye tracking works well really helps my RTX 4080 maintain frames in compatible titles.

The Super has even bigger lenses. So while the external shell might be reduced the internal components probably won’t change that much. Because the Super uses an interchangeable optical stick that’s added plastic and added weight.

I know I’m Pimaxes biggest critic but they keep making decisions that allow companies like Big Screen Beyond and now MeganeX to come in and do the things I’ve been asking for for years.

If the MeganeX Superlight can get units out in February/March next year the Crystal Super is dead in the water imo.

Pimax might as well scrap the Super and concentrate on the 12k wide FOV. That’s the future for Pimax but if they take too long Hypervision will be there and Pimax will be in no man’s land and I’ll be here with a load of I told you so’s.
