I can’t say specific Headsets but Headsets that use Oculus Platform enjoy games that have a variety of FFR agnostic to gpu support in game. If mem serves I believe Oculus has 3 or 4 methods available in their sdk.

About my thinking - that’s why I asked about what kind of distortions. As Sebastian said there is a lot going into it and its so many factors playing a role.

At the end - I still think the discussion is at a dead end - when we get more reviews, maybe some through the lens shots etc. we maybe could come a bit closer to a possible cause - but that still leaves out personal factors or hardware delta factors.

I am getting my 8k+ on Thursday if FEDEX (finally!) is to be believed. I will, if there is any interest, try my best to do a short Video about it - actually was amazed that there is still no unboxing and such of the delivered 8k+'s on the forum i could find. I am not a YouTuber Pro - so it will not meet up to what the others could do - but it might help pass the time till you get your 8k+ or the 8kx - or is there an NDA in the Box?

Thank you Sebastian for your own personal experiences and impressions. I value your opinion as always. I hope the colours and distortion can be improved with software. Can you update your findings if and or when this occurs. I think price and expectations are also a factor. You could buy 3 index headsets only for the price of the 8kx and a lot less if they have the deluxe audio option which I feel should be included with every 8kx for the asking price.

Thank you @mixedrealityTV for the clarification. I remember we talked about a new PiTool version that solved some distortion issues for you, but I was not aware you already confirmed the fact your unit didnt belong to the old batch. Either way, thanks for trying the json file.

Now, from my understanding reading your conclusion, the distortion you see is simply the same distortion some people, especially new users, perceive with the previous Pimax units, such as the old 8K and the 5K+. I remember you said in the past (last year) that the Pimax distortions are ā€œnearly gone now on Normal FOVā€ during the time distortion profiles were requently updated. Back then, you were a frequent Pimax user and your eyes probably adapted to the wide FOV. Now today, you obviously use the Index more than Pimax, which explains why you see the Pimax distortions more apparent than before.

Looking at your videos and reading your previous comments, my impression was that you said there is some severe distortion on the 8KX which you havent seen before, especially not on the Artisan. This got me very confused, and worried, hence my reaction to your statements. I was seriously wondering whats wrong, because it didnt sound right, and I bet it gave your audience a big red flag regarding the 8KX headset in general. Which isnt really fair.

Now reading your post here today, I finally understand what you mean. Its just unfortunate though, that this never was explained the same way in your videos. When you talked about it in yor videos, it more or less sounded like ā€œsomething is wrong with this 8KXā€.

Regarding your hardware… There is of course no one blaming your PC for the distortion, but in terms of performance and image quality in HL Alyx, the PC hardware is a big factor, especially since the built-in dynamic resolution in HL Alyx instantly kicks in upon frame drops, which dramatically decreases the image quality and immersion. This is why I pointed it out.

Another reason I questioned your hardware was the fact you earlier mentioned you had frequent crashes in X-Plane 11. Now in this case, Im more or less 100% sure its the CPU+RAM configuration which is the cause for the crashes. X-Plane 11 is very heavy on single-core load. A nearly maxed out GPU and fully maxed out CPU core 1 depends a lot on a stable setup, not only the CPU voltage and clocks but also the RAM timings and voltage. I dont know if your PC is manually clocked by you, if you use some auto-profile for OC, or if its just default settings. But either way, this is something that you should look deeper into. FYI, on most ASUS/Asrock/MSI motherboards, an 8700K and 9900K processor will most likely not run stable with default BIOS settings, at least not if you push the CPU to the limits by the software. Feel free to dig deeper into this and try to stabilize your setup by doing a proper manual clocking/overclocking.

Anyway, Im glad you did this post to clarify your statements. Reality is indeed not ā€œblack or whiteā€, and every person has an opinion which I fully respect and accept. Having that said, Im just a bit surprised your opinion veries so much from day to day. Im afraid it creates confusion. It confused not only me, but your audience first of all. I think an explanation that you just did here today regarding the distortion, deserves a video on its own. It would for sure help others to understand you better when it comes to Pimax headsets.

Case in point I cancelled my order for an X after Sebastian’s review (after having it on order since October!!) - mainly because money is tight now with the cronavirus but his review pushed me over the edge. If I’m going to spend that much money on something (when money is tight at the moment) I need to know what it’s going to give me over something less than half the price (so now my focus is trying to gather more info on the Artisan).

Hi.
Did you get your refund? How did you go about it please.
Ludiks another forum member really liked the Artisan.

We all have the freedom to decide what we prefer and what we value. Corona is indeed making it difficult for a lot of people, and its totally understandable.

Its all up to you what you value and what you dont. You can actually play HL Alyx on a Quest with Link, for 400 bucks. You can play it on the Oculus, Vive, Index and almost any headset. It will still be a great game, which it truly is. Heck you can maybe even play it on the Oculus Go with NOLO or whatever

For me, its not really about what you get for less than half the price. Its whats you miss out by going for less than half the price. This is why the majority of the 8KX orders are made. People that want more than the average. Higher resolution, more FOV.

But as long as you are clear with yourself and know how much you value these aspects, the easier it is to justify a potentially higher price. Just like with any other product you buy on a regular basis.

My excitement level went from 10 to around 2 also. I trust Sebastian’s impartial impressions but understand everything is subjective.

Thats the power (and danger) of being an influencer. A good and reputable influencer makes people to take decisions. And maybe thats the reason an influencer should have the responsibility to be very on-point and very informative when making important statements. Which the above clarification from Seb certainly did without a doubt, while the previous videos unfortunately did not.

You just need to email them and then they registered me in some way that I could set up a ticket and it then it just took a few days. Pimax were very responsive and good about it. To be clear though, I wouldn’t have refunded if money wasn’t tight.

Yup, one day I’ll get my hands on a Pimax I’m sure but I’ve still got my OG Vive wireless set up that I’m going to use to play Alyx for a bit - I haven’t actual used it at all for a couple of months as we moved house and everything was in chaos and I thought I’d wait for the X to start playing VR again (and at the same time try to forget about my love for wireless) - but looks like I’ll sit on the fence for a bit longer (you never know Pimax wireless might be out by then!!!)

I think if anything history with the Pimax headsets has taught us is to not over react to quickly based on the single impressions of any one person. The range of experiences is far to great for that. Wait until there are several impressions out there before you automatically let yourself get too focused on any negative or positive impressions. I appreciate MRTV’s preview comments greatly. I also know that I personally had no issue with distortions on the 5k+ so I’m not concerned about having them on the 8KX either. There were also way too many positive impressions from a LOT of other people who got to experience the headset before all this coronavirus stuff happened to just now discount all of that based on the experience of one person.

Unfortunately the current state of the world has put a stop to all of those useful and wonderful road show events that gave us a chance to hear the personal impressions from a great number of different people. That leaves us currently only able to hear impressions from the few people who happen to have access to the headset currently. Two of those people have an extremely positive impression of the 8KX currently and one them a slightly less positive impression of it. The sample size is just too small right now to draw any really reliable conclusions before you get to personally experience it for yourself.

Best to just enjoy some VR gaming on whatever headset you currently have for now and wait for the situation to improve before trying to draw any real conclusions about the quality of the 8KX yet.

Amen. I couldnt have said it better @acegamer

Time will tell once we have the first batches delivered to people, especially including MAS. I can’t wait for that day to happen. And honestly, Im very confident the vast majority of people will be blown away. We currently have several major companies evaluating the 8KX and all are very pleased.

Thank you for your advice. I look forward to seeing or reading everyone’s impressions.

Yeah, problem is that many people want straight answers, skipping long reviews to the conclusion - should I buy this or not?
What the video really says is ā€œI personally prefer the Index over the 8k-X for HL:Alyx overallā€
Which easily gets reduced to ā€œI wouldn’t buy the 8k-X over the Indexā€
That is then further reduced to: ā€œOne shouldn’t buy the 8k-Xā€
Statements two and three are not at all what was said nor intended. But it’s difficult to stop people from drawing these conclusions.
The world isn’t black and white. But people want it to be. So, if it isn’t white, it must be black - and vice versa.
So better not leaving a single sentence in the conclusion the article can mentally be reduced to or that can be quoted out of context  It’s difficult…

Edit: Well, if one sentence sticks in mind I hope it would be - ā€œit dependsā€
