Half-Life: Alyx - best VR game ever?

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m not sure that’s a game I want to play though. I play games in the evening, before going to bed, so that I can relax. That’s why I explore so much in Elite D; I listen to music and just go sight-seeing. Assetto Corsa works too and I’m looking forward to playing the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, once they add VR support.

I do play shooters from time-to-time. Right now, I’m playing Borderlands 3 with a couple of friends in co-op, but I’m playing on my monitor, not in VR. B3 is a lot of fun and I’m really enjoying it.

I actually prefer those less complicated games. I do go back and play them, but generally, it’s years later, once I’ve forgotten some of the details.

That’s how I felt, the first time I played Half-Life. It was my favourite game for years, until Halo came out. I’d still rank all the HL games as the best series ever.

Ah OK, maybe I didn’t pay close enough attention. Looked like a large space that players were moving through. I’ll have a closer look.

@neal_white_iii you should definitely try Alien Isolation in VR. Greatly enjoyed the first hours when slowly scanning all of the station. Sure it has a few scare jumps scripted. But not heart attack inducing ;).

And you should try Borderlands 1/2/PS in VR with vorpx. Its a blast - especially in coop. I dunno about B3 (bought it only for console so far, not yet played) but it should run also great with vorpx. Even if not in g3d, z3d is also great and much better performing and compatible (shadows, shaders)

Thanks for the recommendation.

I already have VorpX. My system struggles with B3, so I don’t think that’s an option, even if VorpX could support it. My system isn’t a slouch either: i7-8700K, 32 GB, RTX 2080. I have to run B3 at 1440p, even though I have a 4K monitor.

Ooh thanks good idea on Vorpx. Just dusted off Borderlands co-op last night

It is awesome! So immersive it sometime bothers me if you do happen to find something that is not as closely Modeled as e. G. The toilet is (you can look into the water tank with is mechanics). But there really is much love an detail. I did have some bugs, one save game was bogus and more then once something I dropped clipped thorough the floor.

I also like Asgard Wrath’s - quite different game but also a recent master piece of VR.

Wow! You know VR is immersive after moments like that … So I was on a balcony, start scene of HL Alyx. I wanted to look down the street and tried to lean on a railing, but railing is not there! My brain was fooled by VR, again  Just as it was first time I drove a car in VR

Basic question: so I did room setup, but how do I configure forvard direction in Steam VR? After room setup was done I entered the game Valve logo, and game title was to my side. Cheers!

You know the bit where you are asked to point toward your computer, during room setup? Forward will be facing the one long side of the playspace rectangle that most faces away from the computer – this way the cable will coming up from behind you, by default.

(Pretty sure I recall you can also flip it, if you enter the edit mode that is offered, through a button, after doing the cordoning off your room part; At least if you did it with the “advanced” (or suchlike) method ticked.)

I am sure somebody at Valve was adamant about the decision, but HL Alyx got off on a really bad start with me, when the menu turned out to be fixed in space like that, instead of popping up wherever the player happens to be standing - I think I literally groaned. :7

Yeah that thing during start happened to me too … Thanks for the clarification, will do advanced

When it tells You to point at the direction of Your PC (or something like that) that direction will end up being behind You.

I guess they thought it was smart having the cable behind You.

I did not know that. I want to be facing my PC, for a seated experience. Even when I’m using a HOTAS, I need to occasionally use my keyboard and mouse. I’ve arranged it so that the cable comes from behind me, but to the side (just behind my right shoulder). That setup works well for me.

It would have been even smarter, if they indicated their intention during the setup. I am regularly ending up with spaces set in an exactly opposite direction, since I always forget which way the arrow on the floor plan is supposed to point

Just broke picture frame trying to startle a cat with a can and spent 40 minutes cleaning up in this reality :DDDDD

SteamVR, love and hate this thing, on one hand it is so much better than Oculus software, yet there are many weird things about it, and confusing design decisions. It is shaping up, however. I am working on a tool called Crew Chief, and my colleague just added SVR overlay support to it. I can finally get to desktop using a single key press, something that should be built in, without the need for 3rd party tools. But at least, it is successful design on their side that they allow overlay apps.

Well. At least You didn’t break a cat, trying to startle a picture frame…

After, finally, getting my plan F I started playing Alyx and I‘m freaking amazed!
Yes, there are some questionable things that could have been solved in better way (like inventory, no fun holster etc.) but nonetheless mind blowing.

The Pimax flipside though:
With 258 (@Skyrimer thx for the suggestion)
and Alyx optimized Pitool the GPU utilization maxes at 80% and is not hitting stable 72fps.
I may try to tweak further to get stable fps but it is odd that the catalyst is no help at all. It starts to give artifacts from anything above 0,75.
Besides that, there is not even the slightest gain on 0,25 or 0,5.
Is there any chance to max GPU usage without wasting performance?

is there any difference between the 2 pitool version other than Alyx pitool FOV is set to small + PP automatically?
(anything other than small gives strange glitches anyway, no only at the sides)

258 works the same on Alyx and better on any other game so far.

I thought that the index controller are a game changer but I consider completing the game with my OD+
The index controller are great but man, the game looks better than on the 8k.
(which is starting to get cracks as well btw. as is was untouched for many months, but that’s another story)

I have a decent rig (9900k, 32 GB 3700 RAM, 1080ti, M2 drive)

Hey I‘ve completed BL3 with my old CPU 6700k 1080ti. I started with 4k ultrawide but as BL3 already has a prominent fisheye effect it got too annoying on ultrawide, so I decided to play 16:9 2k 75Hz Did some tweaking but got stable 75fps. (Won‘t play the DLCs though, as the game gets too repetitive as BL2)
If you are still interested I can check what I did for trade off. I remember there were some options that gained a lot of performance without loosing anything relevant.

With openvrspace calibrator you can use the index controllers with the o+
