GTX 1080 doing OK with the 8K X!

A small accident caused the GPU to go Kapootz! (Cord yanked by accident) The PC stopped booting. So I installed my old GTX 1080 and what do you know, it works. Lowered the resolution and still looks sharp enough and playable. Granted, I haven’t tried anything too demanding but call me surprised

List of Apps that Work well on the GTX 1080

  1. Beat Saber

  2. Skybox

  3. Pistol Whip

  4. Half Life Alyx.

Ouch sorry to hear. Was that the power cord or a display cable?

It was a combination of cables. The fans ramped up for a while and shut off. Then it refused to boot.

Not sure what happened. I just check the the mother board, power supply, removed the fans from the GPU. I didnt see any signs of burning. Just put it back together and the GPU booted up. So all good now.

Having said that, Im impressed I could play with the 8k X on a gtx 1080 none TI

Well I will say pimax can be impressive on somerhings on there capabilities.

During the m1 testing the 980ti completely failed on the og 8k. Since it’s public release it not only runs on the 980ti but also has ran on a 970. My old Amd r9 390 8g also works quite well.

Glad to hear you got it all working again

I will say that plenty of games that fail to run properly is lack of optimizing. Pimax is putting the effort to make a working unit, so kudos

Agreed. Sony demonstrated long ago just how poorly games are optimized for VR. By showcasing psvr on the ps4 which is more or less a mid tier gpu paired with a laptop cpu in an apu package. Also showcased how under utilized Amd is on pc by many Devs.

There are probably several reasons for it. I can’t claim I know, but over the last few generation, AMD failed to gain any significant traction of the market. Most people owned NVIDIA branded cards. This allowed Nvidia to invest for better implementation from developers.
Also, a substantial portion of AAA game developers still not consider VR games viable. Hence they do not implement VR best practices when developing their games. This unleashes issues when later decide to retrofit titles into VR. Case and point Fall Out 4

Sorry to hear about your expensive GPU. However, while you are working with the GTX 1080, please test Virtual Desktop with a 4k screen and the Pimax Vision 8kX. This is a very important data point.

Also, I am not surprised that HL Alyx runs reasonably well…

How are you so calm?

Edit:
Wait I want an RTX 3090 …whoops “yank”. My 2080Ti broke too… guess I have no choice now :innocent:

To be fair the pc has been under utilized by AMD (until the 6800 series at least)

Haha! I decided to wait for the RTX 3080 ti. It should be cheaper and similar in performance

Hi, i use an 8KX with 1080 (3080 on order) and seems to work ok with virtual desktop in Native mode (4k) and with a 4k screen (LG OLED). Works fine. Racing simulators are ok-ish as long as graphics slightly turned down (depends on title) and playing in offline mode

Nice. If I may ask, please state your PiTool Render Quality, SteamVR Video Resolution, and Virtual Desktop Supersampling setting. Knowing the resolution you are able to get in Virtual Desktop with a 1080 could solidly confirm lower-power machines could be used for such a purpose.

On the contary. The hd7000 and the r9 gpus performed well. It is not like the Intel Gpu which is very lacking in features and capabilities. Games that have optimized on Amd do quite well.

As mentioned with the gaming consoles Starting with the Game Cube has demonstrated what happens when the Architecture is properly utilized. My r9 390 8g running both 5k+ and og 8k also demonstrates capability. Not sure what happened when they moved to hbm in the rx480 to Vegas as they seemed to have problems in different areas.

However did see a powerful setup showcasing BF5? Which was very impressive. Now the 6000xt gpus seems to be doing what gcn1 did at launch on PC. Which is quite refreshing.

Of course a 1080TI can run it fine, I do fine with a 8k+ which is supposed to be even more demanding ^^

actually about 25% faster

Is it? Did they move to 7nm TSMC?

Not sure, but the 3070 is bang on equal to 2080Ti

Thats right a $500 gpu is near equal to a 2080Ti which was like $1000 retail (but sold higher than that)

The 2080 TI is predominantly faster than the 3070, while the 3070 does outperforms it at times also. Agree the $500 is a good price. The 3060ti is said to be 10% slower than the 3070 and at 399

There is a big difference between a 1080Ti and a 1080.
