I have never played DCS. But I did a search in Steam it shows up as free to play. Is it the base game is free and you need to purchase add on to play different aircraft?

Yes, exactly.
The free game comes with 2 free aircraft.

If you want to fly F-14s, F/A-18Cs, A-10Cs or other cool aircraft then you have to buy them … and the prices aren’t cheap at all!
