SteamVR games in PIMAX Mode are rendered in 2160x1200 since the Pimax Headset is recognised as a Vive/Oculus clone.
The Pimax Headset then upscales that image to 4K.
You can’t set your VR resolution.
SteamVR in Direct Mode/Pimax Mode does this automatically to the resolution of the Rift and Vive.
The resolution values you see in-game applies to your monitor display only and does not affect the resolution projected on the Pimax 4K Headset.
You get the 4K resolution on the Pimax VR headset as a result of upscaling.
In extended mode, that’s a different story since your PC will just see the Pimax VR as another monitor and you can use Nvidia’s and AMD’s virtual resolutions settings.
I can set up the resolution till 1080p, the extra resolutions are provided with VSR and i can easily see the difference in pimax mode. I’m talking about the game resolution.
By the way it seems that the output resolution is limited by the resolution of your main monitor in pimax mode.
Mine is a 1080p, i should have a 4K tv soon.
The article I posted explains how it all works.
The resolution is pre-defined by the current technology of VR headsets and there’s a direct relation with how the lens are made for those VR headsets.
That’s how the technology works.
Whatever resolution you’re selecting is purely for display to your monitor so other people can see what you’re seeing in VR.
Other rendering options except resolution will translate to VR display also like AA, BLUR, etc.
Do you have a Pimax?
I wouldn’t be commenting in this forum if I didn’t personally own a set of Pimax 4K VR Headset.
So yes, I do have a Pimax.
I’ve had mine for over a month.
This makes sense, but, I’m confused. How can gp20 be seeing better image on the PIMAX when he uses VSR to set a higher resolution?
So i wonder how you can be wrong like that.
When i set 1024x768 or 1400x900 in Pcars i get different results. And it’s the same with VSR.
It seems that you don’t understanf what really happens.

There’s numerous post on the internet about what I’m saying. You can enhance the quality of the image by using supersampling (Elite Dangerous has this feature and SteamVR allows you do do it to all SteamVR games by editing a file). But what you can’t do is change the native resolution of the VR games which are set to 2160x1200 when played through Pimax Mode or Direct mode.
You can never under estimate the power of the placebo effect.
The world is round, some people still think it’s flat.
Is there some way you could use a camera to shoot through the lens to demonstrate the difference in resolution you are seeing?
My thoughts.
When you set a resolution into your game steam vr has no impact on it (and how could it have an impact) so the game provides to steam the ingame resolution. Then steam upscale this resolution or/and the headset do it.
That’s why when you change the ingame resolution it changes the resolution of the game on your main monitor and it changes the way it looks in pimax.
There is a difference between 1024x768 and 1400x900 etc…
You can test it by yourself. Check the textures.
What about the Vive controllers? Is it possible to still play a specific game even though you’re suppose to have the controllers?
