The people of the German website Heise.de have tried the Pimax 8k at CES. Their review can be found here:
It’s in german, google translate helps out. I speak German too, so here a quick summary of their main points:
The Headtracking latency didn’t feel good
They couldn’t see any pixels
Not a lot of ghosting
Very high FOV
low brightness
Price will be less than $500
No native resolution support !
This last point is quite disturbing. So AGAIN they somehow managed to NOT support the 2x4K resolution natively ! You’d think they’d have learned from the first version and at least put display port 1.4 into it, but that seems not the case unfortunately
You guys need to get on the stick and add displayport 1.2 or higher to this HMD. This is just ridiculous. All of Nvidia’s pascal GPUs (which are a must have minimum for this) are equipped with the proper connector. You need dual displayport inputs for this headset to operate properly.
There are no excuses for HDMI 1.4 on this device. If you are going to use 8k in your marketing, the thing should be able to drive its panels at the native resolution.
I think it only supporting HDMI, especially below 2.0, is a really terrible idea. I hope it gets fixed when they release this. (Ideally I’d prefer if no wires were used at all, and that it be a wireless headset, but that’s just my preference)
Not good, not good @ all. They appear to be hitting some points and missing others entirely. That unsupported native res, low brightness and head tracking latency really stands out. If it’s not remedied, the HMD will not be viable for gaming.
Picture from Will Mason tweet @WBMason a few hours ago. with controllers, lightbox-like base stations, etc.
Positional tracking for Pimax 8k (and 4k) coming soon? Could be great!
Anyway…with 1 or 2 hdmi/DP wires I suggest to provide removable wires for 2 reasons:
-easy replacement of wires in case of problem/ replacement with longer wires for better experience;
-some devices will provide wireless connection in a few weeks/month. It could be useful to be able to disconnect the wires in case of use of such devices.
Is anyone surprised? They literally took two of their current displays and glued them together. Hence the specs (2x 4K instead of real 8K). It was such a hackjob that they even needed 2 HDMI ports lmao, one for each of their displays.
2 HDMI ports is no good. Only have one on GPU and it gets used by an fit-Headless GS. Are the screens really the same as the 4K model, only supporting higher resolution?
No surprises. You would think a chinese company traveling to one of the biggest electronic shows would also run their marketing material by ONE person who speaks english so it doesn’t fucking say
It can be very frustrating to deal with them but right now they have the best resolution image if you have patience and are willing to experiment. That said, I don’t think it will be long before someone catches them. There is a lot of momentum building in the VR space. I suspect the other vendors are waiting for, or in development with, a better 4K (or higher) display.
I’m not aware of any manufacturer that is going to release a 4k screen soon. Lenovo is working on a 2x1440x1440 HMD but that’s still not 4k. And it now seems the Galaxy s8 also is not going to feature a 4k headset, they’re saying the Note 8 now (which will come in fall 2017 if it doesn’t explode, lol).
So for 2017 it seems we’re stuck with Pimax LCD 4k It’s just the best out there, at least in terms of SDE.
