Even trying all the different brightness settings, the lcd looks completely washed out compared to OLED,
in addition the perceived resolution is only slightly better than the VIVE but inferior to the pro (lower ppd?)
that I’m used to, also not having the linkbox since I have the pc in an adjacent room is a pain for me.
Finally the non co-planar position of the screens gives me a headache and the stereo overlap in the
middle appears way weaker to me than any hmd I’ve used before.
I think I’ll sell my 8k and wait for the Index at this point.
Which headset?
read his last sentence… 8k
Make sure the super sampling is set correctly. Also, try normal field of view. There are some issues with the large field of view effecting clarity. Set your IPD using this.
My first impressions wasn’t good either but you need to spend some time and find the good settings.
The brightness can be pushed but we need an update from Pimax.
I felt very similar the day I turned mine on for the first time. I am still working on making it actually usable. My approach is that I am buying a slim foam pad and shimming it with Velcro until the eye strain is gone. It’s annoying to have to do this with a $700+ headset but it seems like these lenses are so complicated that the fit is very custom to each person.
Try taking the facial foam pad off completely and just hold the headset and move it around to see if there is a comfortable spot. I initially thought I needed more padding until I did this and then I realized I needed less.
Again, I haven’t solved this yet but I’m hopeful.
Yeah, they really need to get some eye tracked distortion correction. Even automatic IPD detection would help a LOT.
I don’t try the 8k but the 5k+ is way better that oddisey with 210 superpling, so far
I would reccommend the same play around with it & get setting reccommendations. You should on either headset get better resolution than Vive Pro. Contrast of course will have it’s limits as per lcd tech limits.
Post your specs here from memory
I7 4790k
Msi z97i ac
16g ddr3 (spd?)
2080 ti? Or ?
And games your looking at. Your i7 4790k might be a factor. So if you have a friend with a newer beefy cpu might be an idea to check.
WarRobotsVR is free & has decent visuals.
Just finished experimenting for a full 6 hours, yeah if I thinker around with pitool and steamvr I can get a decent compromise fps/res wise, the main thing I just cannot get around is the contrast compared to OLED.
At this point I think I won’t buy the Valve Index either if it uses LCD too and only order controllers and 2.0LHs.
I run my 8K using Low brightness, to improve the blacks. At some point, PiTools is supposed to gain color settings, so you should (eventually) be able to boost the color saturation. I’ve never owned an OLED headset, so the 8K looks ok to me.
I can see your point and somehow envy you, after 4’000 hours with oled hmds though it’s impossible to come back it seems …
While it is unlikely to match an oled fully in terms of Blacks & whites. If pimax unlocks advanced color controls should be able to get more reasonably closer. Perhaps not as close as Qled. But then again pentile oled hardly compares to Qled or Rgb oled either.
I can say if money was coming off my printer I would love to have an LG Oled rgb TV. But $3,000+ vs $600-$800. Have to be happy with my 4k LEDtv awhile more.
have u tried this: https://community.openmr.ai/t/how-to-exceed-the-maximum-resolution-of-4096px-imposed-by-steamvr/16067
As said I somehow found a compromise between resolution and performance (thanks to my 2080ti too),
the issue as mentioned is the lcd contrast.
