Eye tracking - how?

did you connect ET to your HMDs port? How is lag overall? I saw you comment on fast eyes movement but can you please elaborate a bit more on this.

Also did you try to connect ET with USB3.0 cable directly to your PC it can increase frequuency of eyes scan so lag will be diminished.

Currently it is connected by a non-Pimax usb c cable from the tracker side to the bottom of the HMD. So it’s on 30 Hz, USB 2.0.

I /may/ have also disabled the top port connection in USBTreeView or the Device Manager. Or maybe I just removed the device from there while it was connected with both. Not sure. I also disabled another USB camera.

For the following impressions please bear in mind I have only tried for about an hour total. Like 10 min in each game I mentioned above. Very little tweaking. Also I usually have 3d printed lens inserts in but had to remove them. I was not wearing lenses for this. My vision is ā€œokā€ enough to play games without, but certainly not super sharp.

Lag is noticable. But I think it is something that I (and most people) will be able to get used to. But at this speed it’s definately not a magic, amazing upgrade.

To me, when it works well it’s a similar experience to texture or model pop in with distance. But I think it is less distracting, by maybe ~65%. I think, if you hate pop-in, you will not like the effect. But if you can deal with pop in, and even ignore it after a while, the effect will be absolutely fine for you. Whether to use DFR or not with a game at this speed may become a chioce similar to whether to max out draw distance or not. Different in all games and a trade off with the FPS gain you find you can get.

It also seems like, as with pop-in, different games do it better or worse for various reasons. Alyx seemed very smooth from what I saw and I’ll definately be trying that again. I could only see it working when I darted my eyes at least 40 degrees. This was in the dark menu environment though. But with Elite, with the menu open, the effect was very obvious on the text in the quite-close periphary. Much less so without text though.

I did try USB 3.0 direct to PC at one stage but it was not working then. I have not disconnected its current working configuration to try that again yet.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes USB3.0 definetely worth to try out just for comparison.

I also wonder is criticism by other users reasonable enought regarding 5k+ & ET 30 Hz mode, as others pointed lag is about 2Hz so it can be refined with firmware, also when you look for something you start to move your eyes much faster, indeed for simers in something like DCS it makes perfect sense but for casual playing e.g. in HL:A I just tried to quickly move my eyes by 40 degrees & it’s not pleasant experience for me I don’t my eyes so quickly I rather move eyes & head simultaneously in fast paced games so the process will be much less uncomfortable for me, e.g in Echo VR I have no issues at all. Also people often blame that HMD wobbles e.g. Vive Pro & they start to shake head as crazy, but in reality you don’t shake it so much & it’s only case when you artificially model such a case, for face shapes that fit bad it’s the case but not for an average user though.

We have more updates coming and updates to the ET is a high priority for the two teams who are working on it.

I agree. It’s early days for eye tracking. While I was shocked how they released it (typically pimax) with no explanation how it works whatsoever, I have to say that all I play right now is HL-A and there I had no issues at all. I never saw anything pixelated while playing. I would’ve thought it doesn’t work at all but with the resolution I use it doesn’t even booth without ET and it does run smooth like silk. If this works for other games too ET does the job I hoped it does. hz is a theoretical value I don’t care about as long it works.

What fov are you using small/normal/large ??

Only and allways large. That’s what I backed my 5K+ for.

Reason i asked is that to use the ET my eyes have to be at an fov restrictive distance away from the lens , The best i can get it working with a clear view is about 120 degrees fov .
My ipd is 67.5 pretty normal face features ( Well that’s what my mum said )
or is this just during the calibration ???

Works at large FOV for me. I have the comfort kit that is a bit thicker than the standard foam was though. I have green eyes - maybe that helps too. I read that lighter irises are easier for eye tracking?

I’m 99 percent certain i have my issue.

Its the 5k’s usb2.

I had the 5k as only thing plugged into a specific usb3 card on pc. would not even boot and even with amcap only one tracking ring would light and selectable video size was only half that suggested. 0 fps too. no video signal. Nothing and i mean nothing would fix it. tried every usb port on pc. reinstall etc.

Off a comment on discord i used the tiny usb c cable to connect the eyetracker directly to pc bypassing the pimax. fired up amcap, full resolution feed, 60 fps. All tracking leds on.

will need to buy a 5 m usb c to actually test it with headset but at least its a path forward.

Maybe pimax should send 5k+/8k backers a free 5m usb c cable since the ET module can not do what they said when advertising it. Also our 5k+/8k backer models where advertised as having usb 3.0. Another lie, hand tracking will also be effected by this. So much for being modular

This also eliminates the possibility of having wireless. Although I don’t know how feasible it would be to have the hmd+addons wireless, or if that was ever part of the plan.

I am an 8KX user and of course use the USB 3.0 port but ET is not working.
I tried various things such as changing the port setting description and giving administrator authority, Upscale mode, but the LED never shines.

ET is not running or the ET server is not running and the software is giving a connection error.

I just received repair parts for the base ring. Thank you for customer service.

Well your doing better than me…I cant even get the amcap software to do anything. I get an error ā€œ800700005: Cannot create video capture filterā€ and under options there is no video capture pin button that is present in the instructions sent.

I got this too today.
I have never applied for this guide part… ^^;;
Why? HAHA

My base ring is broken right and left.
The upper two pins of the left ring were broken.
Also, the silver frame came off.
The right ring loses its holding power on the adhesive surface with the lens and is peeling off.

My IPD is 73 and the IPD dial is always MAX
The two cables in the center have high tension, and I think that the holding power of the ring is lost.
I expanded the top hole, but I’m not sure if that’s enough.
Spare parts will be needed for everyone.

Well if Pimax applies an extra 3.0 port on the wireless module itself there will be no problem.

i mean i do wonder if this explains why they shifted 8kx to one usb port.

have you tried bypassing pimax completely and connecting directly to pc or gpu usb c?

Yes this was all done with 7invensun remote viewing into my computer to help troubleshoot. At this point the Allcap software just…doesn’t work…on my computer. The 7invensun support guy couldn’t help, we tried every port on my computer tried updating usb drivers, nothing. The Allcap software refuses to run on my pc. His only other solution was to try on a separate computer and if it still didn’t work then I would then be up for a replacement.

So I tried on my laptop but this time without support because he had to go and was able to get the Allcap software to actually start correctly and doing so was able to get the leds on the eye tracker to turn on but I did not see anything in the preview screen and my fps was showing 0. So now I am waiting to hear back again from 7invensun about what to do next.
