Eliminate gyro drift pretty much completley

ELIMINATE GYRO DRIFT
1.2.93 beta just released which contains an option called Magnetim calibration (They mean magnetism)
Run this, then tilt the headset up, then down, then rotate it left, then right, then repeat all over again until a message displays calibrate complete on the screen. Now run a game and you should have little to no headset drift.

The instructions are badly worded by pimax in english but the above is what they mean, at first I was moving it up, down, left, right instead of tilting up down and rotating left right and this did not work it just made things worse. You could always put it on your head and look up, down, left, right too which should work.

I used to have to recenter in assetto corsa on nordschleife around 8 times per lap, now i can do 3 laps and do not have to recenter at all, have not tried more yet.

You might have to re-calibrate before every session, i don’t know as i haven’t tried 2 sessions in a row yet but it only takes about 30 secs anyway.

CREDIT TO ENEPHO FOR POINTING THIS OUT TO ME AND OTHERS, THIS SHOULD BE MADE STICKY.

I had no trouble understanding.
For me it seemed obvious that I should “look” up, down, left, right.
Moving the HDM simply does not make sense, there are no external sensors to detect the VR going up and down.
But thanks for sharing, maybe other people have the same doubt.

Hey Dave, Just to confirm. Rotation is not looking left and right BUT head rotation first circling toward the left and then to the right-hand side? E.G. Look up, down, then circle left, circle right… repeat…?

Thanks

G

To look left, you must rotate/circle your head left (unless your an alien), so yes, rotate left or look left, it’s the same thing to me.
Just spin/turn/rotate/circle it to the left and right, all the same thing really.

Yes, well, i’m an idiot lol so wrote that for other idiots like myself :grinning:

I’m sorry, I did not mean to offend, just put myself in the software developers perspective.

They did not make any mistake, the information is clear, but you say “the instructions are badly worded”.

PIMAX has no external sensors and there is no other way to calibrate than using the gyroscopes.

Again, If it seemed offensive, please forgive me, I am Brazilian and I have difficulty to write
in english, I use google translator most of the time.

You did not offend me, so don’t worry, it made me laugth.

The reason i say badly worded is because it is poor english, but if you are not native english speaking yourself you may not have noticed and may be clearer to you, but your english is actualy very good.

It says “please handle your HMD device, and doing up, down, left, right rotation”

which to me means move it up, down, left, right and repeat in that order.

Rotate also means to repeat or cycle the order of something in english you see, for example shift rotation and crop rotation, and i was over thinking it

But yes, i realized the same as you that what i was doing was wrong because of the gyros having no up or down and did it again after it did not work.

I love reading these discussions.
They really crack me up :joy:

The tool works fantastic. After a couple of times calibrating, it stays super steady now. Great job of Pimax!

UPDATE. Pimax have now released 1.2.95 which removes the calibration option and is supposed to calibrate automaticaly, but for me this did not work and now the drift is back again, so i personaly will stay with 1.2.93 because i need the calibration option. Some say 95 works, others no joy.

Just got my exchanged Pimax, swapped BE version for the 4K.
My question is, how do I calibrate the gyros on piplay version 1.2.97
I tried to play DCS and the drift was horrendous

@Enopho has some good method for calibration procedure.

But if your looking for manual calibration new version might have it. Otherwise last version that has it is 1.2.93

I can’t see anything in this version.
I’m having problems with the HMD screen going off after about 10 minutes with the light turning red.

Maybe I will try and older version see if it stops that as well.

Cheers

You can’t ,it is only available on 1.2.93 and the latest 2. something version that just came out, which ive not yet tried but plan too as it has the manual calibration added back in.

Also, if you calibrate it and it doesn’t work, calibrate it a few more times, i sometimes have to do it 3 or 4 times, not often but sometimes.

Dave

Yep & i know @Enopho has mentioned open display mirror & press z to center headset. If i recall correctly.

1.2.97 has auto calibration. all you have to do is set the forward facing and as @Heliosurge mentioned you can do this in steamvr - open display mirror and click on it (thats important) then press Z while looking straight ahead - that tells steam when your forward is. thats it!

Auto does not work at all for me and a few others, neither does mirror and z, makes zero difference and still drifts all over, hence why I and some others need the manual calibration, but if it works for you that’s good, unfortunately not for me.

Have you tried the latest piplay. 2.2.x as it has manual and auto Giro calibration?

I have just tried 2.0.2.33 and the manual calibration works good, although sometimes it finishes calibrating before I’ve done the full up, down, left, right, it ends on either down or left unless I do it really fast. I make sure it’s done all 4 directions before i start a game, no idea if it would work if i don’t.

I also really like the color and layout of the new piplay, and it’s a lot easier to find my steam vr games in piplay than it is in steam now, which is nice, as it has a much more user freindly grid of images rather than steams long vertical list. A nice bonus.
