Do i need a base station to have headtracking with P8k?

Does the Pimax 8k need a base station to actived headtracking?
I have backed the 8k without handsets because i do not want or use them. But using headtracking would be nice.
Help please.

i have wondered about that myself. The kickstarter talked about built in laser tracking but not actually sure what it is.

No, the Pimax 8K doesn’t need a base station to activate headtracking. If you were in a seated position playing a sim VR racing car game, the game will be able to track your head movement in the game for example without the controllers. Games that require only an Xbox controller also, would be fine without controllers.

Be aware… many VR titles require trackable controllers.

Thanks for the information.

Don’t believe leaning would work without @ least one base station.

I was told that if I want proper headtracking in the space, one base station is needed. For example being in a car or plane cockpit and move closer to the dashboard or turn around or behind…
So what it the truth? Do I need a base station for such a movement? I will use the VR headset only for simracing and flying…

That’s also why i want a P8k.

For Sim cockpit games (cars, planes, spaceships, etc)… You don’t need the BaseStation (or controllers) to have head tracking. The game will track your head movement in the game. However, for the optional VR experience in Sim cockpits, a single BaseStation will be more immersive for tracking more of your physical body. For Simpits where you are always in a sitting position, only 180 degrees is required. For other games that require you to stand and turn, you are better off with two BaseStations and trackable controllers. And for those that want to create a very large space for standing and moving around, you can purchase 4 Bastations to expand your walkable VR area.

Thanks.
Sorry Pimax, i canceled the base staion. Maybe in the future or when you KS a new Pimax 16kx, i will buy 2 of them. :v:

i think you would get away with one base station with pimax. The reason they can get away with it (and advertise it) is the headset is so god damn wide that your head cannot occlude it fully. That’s why there’s such a density of track points on the side and head facing overhang parts.

hmmmm… I think they also said that two basestations would provide better coverage. If I was counting on 360 degrees tracking without fail ever, I think you’ll still need two.

nod more stations will always be better. But it says they made 360 tracking possible with one base station on initial specs page. The reason you can so that is width of headset means your head cant occlude it. you would have to curl into a ball. bend over and have your torso block the line of sight. your head is too small to do it. XD

I would love more info on that laser tracking though. what it can and cant do might make big difference to op. like if it gives you some range of torso movement then he def wouldnt need a base station.

normally its called roomscaling…

“I think they also said that two basestations would provide better coverage.”

It was Pimax themselves saying this about their basestations. I’m sure one basestation will work. But it won’t work better than two. I base that opinion on what I have heard Pimax rep tell me and what I actually believe. But in the end, in several months when they start shipping them, we’ll know for sure. NOLO has trackable controllers that can do 360 degrees. Does it do 360 degrees well? NOPE!!! It only has one basestation.

Tracked controllers could still be occluded with a single base station if you turn your back on it.

i did agree that more trackers is better, im just quoting the kickstarter where it says they can do 360 head tracking with one.

I only want use headtracking to look left or right. Roomscaling is not for me.

As I understood it, you’ll only get 3DOF tracking if you don’t have a base station. You need a base station to get the full 6DOF tracking.

With 3DOF you can turn your head. With 6DOF you can also lean and move around. I personally really need the latter for an immersive experience even in seated/sim titles so I’ve asked for a base station with my headset.

did you vr already? a lot of immersion is missing withoud roomscaling, also on seated games like elite or racing games

@yxcxcv Yes I own a few VR headsets. I am not talking about roomscale, that just amounts to 6DOF tracking over a larger area with motion controllers.

But I agree, it is Elite in particular that I am wanting 6DOF for, you need to be able to lean around to see further out the cockpits of certain ships in a fight! No good if you can’t move your head around, I’d always recommend 6DOF over 3DOF tracking.
