Discoloured horizontal lines on right eye panel

Hello all,

I have been using the 5k+ Occasionally since I got it. I don’t have the chance to play with my be headset on a daily basis but I plate once every week or so. However yesterday I turned it on and I saw these discolouration bands on the right eye image in the hmd. Check out the image attached:

A similar thing happened also a few times before upon initialisation but with a reboot of the HMD it would go away.

This time though it seems to be permanent. Nothing fixes it. Reboot, reconnect or even drivers and pi tool rollback

Any suggestions?

Looks strange. It could be a cable connectivity/signal issue, but it might also be a panel issue (especially since its only affecting the right panel). Im sure Matthew will assist you either way on this now, sorry my late response…

Hello all,

I contacted support. I just also wanted to post here in case there was a hint from someone who experienced the same.

So the first reply from support was that it might be a static electricity issue. So they asked me to unplug it and leave it unplugged for 24 hours.

Well I could not wait the full 24 hours but I let it stay for like 13 or 15 hours. Then… well No Mans Sky came out so I just could not wait. So I plugged it in but unfortunately the issue was still there… :frowning: I’ll also try to leave it for 24 hours in case that 13 hours were not enough but it seems to me that it’s not static electricity. I suppose that if that was the case, the lines would be different each time. My issue is really solid and stable. The discoloration is only on the right eye and it’s as it is in the attached image. 4 lines (3 thin ones at the top and one thick one right smack in the middle of the panel)

It might be a cable issue or a panel issue… however I have no clue how to fix that. opening it is out of the question since it’s under warranty.

Just not sure how repairs are handled by Pimax.

How about connecting the power adapter to a different power outlet (another room) maybe? This has happened to me a few times with electronics, where I had problems until I tested the unit to a power outlet in another room.

However, if you have tried to disconnect/re-connect the cables (also on the HMD-end), and it shows its not a static electricity issue after testing the above, please create a support ticket (in case you havent done it yet) and describe the issue and including the image above, and we will take care of it on RMA.

Also, drop me a direct message if you need any further assistance regarding your ticket!

Thanks
Martin

Hello,

Thanks for replying.
There is a ticket I created before creating this thread. The static electricity suggestion came direcly from Pimax support so That’s what I tried to do.

Also I am aware of the nasty problems static electricity causes some times so I tried moving the whole rig + HMD to another room…

I also discharged the PC from any Static it might have. (Removed the power and pressed the on button and then let it sit for a few hours. - I did not remove the memory modules and peripherals though. I figured I didn’t need to do that … right?)

I also tried exchanging the digital outputs between the monitor and the hmd.

None of the above produced results. The discoloration lines remained at the same points on the right screen.

Now, you say to disconnect the cables on the HMD end? Is there a way to remove the cable from the HMD? It looks glued. Like it’s not removable… Or is it?

Yes, you need to gently loosen up the soft plastic part between the headset and the face cover. Just do it on the left upper side. Now you can remove and reconnect the HMD cable.
Check my good old review at time stamp 6:05

But be careful and gentle while doing so…

ohhhhh… Yes! I saw that review while waiting for the headset to arrive.

It’s full of information and I forgot that you mentioned the fact that the cable is detachable this way. I will unplug and replug it when I get home. That will definitely remove any static trapped in there.

As I said though, it “feels” that it’s not static that caused that. I suppose that if it was, the part of the screen with the problem would not be the same. I suspect it’s either a cable going bad or, worse, the pane itself…

I’m really bummed with this cause its the only VR headset I own and didn’t really had the time to get a full dosage of it with the controllers and base stations not having shipped yet, I have many games that I planned to play that don’t support the steam controller and need tracked controllers to work.

Let’s hope that the end of this will not be that by the time I get controllers and base stations, the HMD will be out of commision…

Try contacting support. It could be a hardware issue.

Hello,

Support was very helpfull. So much that I forgot about this thread
So they suggested to uplug it for 24 hours in case it was a static electricity issue. Since that approach failed they asked me to ship it back for a replacement. They use warehouses all around the world so there will be no customs issue. They will even replace it with the new headset that doesn’t have the housing cracking issue.

I am more than content with their support.
