Dirt Rally Settings 5k+ (update thread)

Thanks for the guide, but still no good for me. Something is throwing it off as it did run fine once!

I’ll keep hunting.

What does throwing it off mean?

Sorry, it means stopping it from working correctly.

launching the standard Steam Shortcut works fine, with the PiTool shortcut, it crashes with this error in the Windows Application Logs:

Strange, Have you followed Park’s setup guide https://community.openmr.ai/t/how-to-play-dirt-rally-vr-on-pimax-8k-5k-without-revive-and-steamvr/1857
including adding the (steam_appid.txt) ( and LibOVRRT32_1.dll and LibOVRRT64_1.dll if you don’t have Oculus Home). I added the 2 oculus files anyway as I run Oculus Home manually.
Also launch from Pitool with SteamVR NOT running but Steam opened if your game is a Steam installation.

Yeah, followed it to the letter, and that’s what’s really odd. It ran perfectly the first time, I was in it, everything working exactly as it should except that it was nearly mid-night, and there would have been no such thing as one quick race, so I shut the computer down. Next day, this crash occurs.

Since then I’ve verified the game files, reverted back to PiTool 129 beta, re-installed PiTool 132, deleted and re-installed Dirt Rally, deleted and re-installed Oculus software and Steam VR and can not get it to run again.

Maybe someone else who has seen this error will chime in.

All I got left is to post what I have and that it runs great.

FYI
Dirt Rally on Steam
Steam VR latest non beta
SteamVR SS left on auto
SteamVR not started
Launching game from Pitool (don’t launch SVR)

While launching from PT doesn’t load SteamVR (at least not SVR console) it does use the SS setting in SVR which is why I leave it on auto).

Pitool 129 beta
Pitool sampling 1, no parallel projection, no Smoothing, normal view. 72Hz, mask on
Game setting I can’t recall but texture and track high and others adjusted to performance/taste.
Oculus Home not running (files above moved to DR folder).

My rig
Windows 10 Home
I5 6600K @4.5, Gigabyte GA-Z170XP mobo, Corsair H80i Liquid Cooler, MSI GTX 1080 ti Gaming X gpu, SoundBlaster X-F1 sound card, 16 gig Corsair Vengeance ddr4 ram @ 3200 , 3 ssd hds, EVGA 650 Gold Power supply,

Ohhhhh, is that why that happens!

I used to have a WMR headset and loved the way I could look around the car by leaning. I had no idea that the lack of a lighthouse was why I could never look around and get closer to things in the interior.

Without a lighthouse, you only have 3 DoF “degrees of freedom” (movement) all angular: pitch, roll, and yaw. The lighthouse adds translation along the x, y, and z axes. Here’s a nice VR introduction which explains it…

…and here’s the obligatory Wikipedia link:

Thank you for the info Neal.

As an aside, what are people most successfully using in the way of a single lighthouse for seated racing? I’m looking around but the info is all over the place and solid info is hard to nail down.

I’m using a single lighthouse, which I bought new, from Amazon. It’s ~2.5m from my chair, near the corner of the room. Lately, I’ve been experiencing drift, so it might be better to mount it straight ahead of your chair.

[update] I think the drift is caused by a nearby floor-standing fan, specifically the motor which is < 1m away from my head. My office is small, so there’s no other place to put the fan. For now, I try to play with the fan off, but it soon gets hot.

Andrew, this is brilliant thank you. Looks clean in game, runs really well and has no hiccups.

Very pleased.

Thank you for info, dirt is so great in pimax 5k+
However, was anybody able to use large fov? I can´t get over ca 55fps average even with VERY low settings:( With medium fov i can hold 70-72 but large is so much better:-) i7 8700k and 1080Ti…
And ome more question - i´m unable setup my main monitor to show same image like in pimax - it looks to much up and looking to the roof, any ideas?:frowning:
Thanks, Martin!

I use normal view (9700k+2080Ti) and it runs smooth for me. Haven’t tried large as I usually just leave my headset in normal for everything now.

My main problem with the game is like you said on the monitor I cannot see anything only part of the roof of the car. I like to race with friends and if I use the Pimax we cannot spectate so I have to use Vive Pro.

You all heard dirt rally 2.0 has been update with openVR support which means it works in SteamVR, any one try it out?

There’s a thread about it here:

Definitely going to try this out! I’ve been patiently waiting for dirt 2.0 to get VR. I tried playing it on a monitor when it came out but found myself going back to dirt 1 because of the VR support.

@AndrewUK1990 thank you so much. I picked this game up cheap on Steam after hearing about its popularity in VR. Info on setting it up with the Pimax was pretty scant so I totally appreciate the research and experimentation you’ve done to make it playable for the rest of us! I had some major white screen flickering issues which were solved by switching off all anti-aliasing settings in the nVidia control panel (have had this issue with other games) and switching off CLOTH in the in-game settings (strangely). For a 2016 game it looks pretty amazing and runs smooth as silk with most settings on ultra on my 1080Ti. Thanks so much!

No problem, I’m glad it was helpful.

I’m looking at making a guide for Dirt Rally 2.0 now as well but haven’t finished testing all rallies, RX and graphics combinations etc just yet. I’m 90% there minus RX and the graphics are looking amazing with great framerates. I’ve also found a cure for the periodic CPU spike as well due to USB input pinging.

Will make a guide soon!

For how I drove my Toyota (which was airbourne a lot :grinning: ), I still prefer DR1. It just feels like what I know. The landing physics and car behaviors are amazingly close to my RL experiences.
Others have acknowledged a preference for DR2 physics and in some cases that does not surprise me, To me, it’s a personal preference, much of it depending on what you like to drive, how you like to drive and what you like to drive on.
My investment in DR2 , however, is of no regret as it is a decent enough offering for the 1/2 price Deluxe version and will be driven. I wouldn’t pay full price though.
